So Elite Dangerous is not an MMO; playing with friends online nearly impossible.

SOOOOO MANY people are disappointed in this. They are supposed to have it working in the first quarter but who knows. They keep screwing things up like no tomorrow. But at least it is playable at the moment for the most part. Didn't even get the 5 new ships we were promised on release.

it's not a bug... YET. It just plain is not a working feature yet. You can sometimes end up in the same instance and see each other in nav points and warzones if your lucky. But that's it. Wait just noticed you are beat player lol. So you know this already oh well.

I'm straight flabbergasted. My balls are broken. I just don't get it. How could they put so much time into a game, which is honestly amazing, and then ---- all over it like this? It's incredibly hard to believe somebody made this decision somewhere along the line. I mean, we can't even switch instances.

I will pay the 15$ a month to actually have a game I can play ONLINE with my friends.

Really? No one has anything to say about this? You must be kidding. It is literally the biggest flaw in the entire game.

Its been discussed to death.

1) because of the high twitch nature you can only have maybe 32 to 64 players in one instance before the networking overhead goes exponential
2) The matchmaking code needs fixing. I agree with you there
3) Lead Designer has committed to introducing wings next year early on.

Thats pretty much it.

be as flabbergasted as you like, listen, the game isn't 100% complete, you will have to deal with that. this is the first game built from kickstarter, the game that was promised at kickstarter was a remake of elite, and that was very single player, they have provided that.

Is is multiplayer, well you play online in a universe populated by NPC and other online players so YES it is multiplayer, is it massive, YES if anything too big, so is it an MMO , YES it most definately is and MMO.

It just doesn't yet have the Multiplayer features you would expect in place yet, they ARE going to add this in a later update, (ship tethering, etc).

As far as not being able to play WITH someone now, I don't know why your group is not joining into the same instance and I highly recommend you create a ticket for this as it is clearly a bug of some description causing your issue.

And seriously how melodramatic are you people? so the instance joining function seems to have a bug for SOME people, and you guys shout as though the world is ending, raise a ticket, enjoy the game and have faith that these guys will jump on it and fix the issue. CHILL

I'm in a similar situation. None of my friends want to get near this game after having seen it first hand. I do hope it's fixed, but it seems like most people (or perhaps a very vocal minority) wanted a single player game, while Frontier's marketing team keeps selling it as an MMO. It's messy.

It's not an MMO where you play with other people really. It's an MMO in the sense that we all interact with the same server, and you may see other players. You're a lone ship, flying the galaxy on your own. That's the design decision and if you've been given the impression otherwise then FD made a mistake in advertising, because it's just not that. It's a single player game at heart.

Not sure I agree. FD wouldn't have gone at so painful lenghts (sometimes even at the expense of good PR) to get MP working. Beta 1 and 2 were deliberately broken just get MP bugs fixed.

If you can't play with friends, *ticket* it, please. Add names, time and place so they can pinpoint what's gone wrong.

Doesn't mean matchmaking shouldn't work. It is not by design when it's not. People should report tickets.

I tried "enjoying the game" in gamma, didn't work out too well, the only reason I stuck around was because I knew even though the game is lackluster and empty having friends to coop with would make it more worthwhile, now I find out that the grouping doesnt even work (tried last night).

Any point you raise abut the game not being 100% complete is moot as its officially released, they made the choice to make this the first OFFICIAL release. So now people are paying money for it expecting it to be an MMO and realising it is not quite that. Its MMO features are closer to Dark Souls than an MMO, but anyway my point is the game will be developed much further, which is great. However they are selling the game as complete right now, its no longer alpha, beta, gamma... its released. So these sort of features should really be in it.

I don't get why people are happy with featureless buggy releases these days, lets all settle for mediocrity and be happy... (that was sarcasm)

Things should improve in Jan 15 when wings/alliances are added until then everyone will have to make do with how things are now, it's not great but not impossible either unless a bug has been introduced.

I think currently this is the weakest part of the game. It's a seriously high risk move to launch with under developed multi-player in a game where everyone has to be online anyway and there is only one galaxy (albeit instanced), there must be good reasons for it. Had I not been in gamma etc. I too would have been very disappointed admittedly, so I can sympathise.

I think there is going to be more development with this though, I say think, because FD are notoriously bad at setting expectations or publishing any plans, barring a few vague indications I really don't have much of a clue what is coming but I read frequently that 'wings' are coming which I assume will include some back end stuff to help with meeting up an arriving in the same place together, but I have no source for that. What I would really like to see is tangible benefits for co-op other than bringing 'more ships to the fight', especially in mining and maybe even support modules or ship classes, and definitely shared rewards and bonuses.

early days.

we all report the problem since gamma and before, and nothing change. if you are not on the same server as your friend when launching the game you can't join them. the only way to join them is to close/relaunch the game to hope to be in the same server and here you will see them. they know it and they did nothing for it for now.

and dont say 15 jan for coop play plz, we only know it's early 2015 no date say, it can be in jan or even in may... (it was not for you but for the one replying some time after you ^^)

Wings ETA

Where did January 15th come from? Is that something you can show a source for, or just something you pulled out of...space?

As for grouping, it has worked for me and my friends, so far; but the game really needs wings, and the ability to move around space with your wing to be the co-op game it begs to be.

Believe that there was a patch that may have addressed some of this issue, was certainly seeing lots of people in open and in group.

Give it another try.

What I'd like to see now is that you can jump onto the same USSs, they seem to be random for each player. Also, if one of you does get interdicted, the other should be able to jump in for help. I'd love to see this happen so my brother can go trading while I'll be his armed-to-the-teeth guard dog. :)

You can do this. Pick a lead player and get him to target the USS. The other player follows close behind. When the lead player drops into the USS he leaves a FSD wake behind which the second player can target and safely disengage at, arriving in the same USS as the lead player.

We are seeing a lot of these threads which I predicted before launch.

Lets answer a few questions:

Yes multiplayer is barebones, but Frontier will be implementing new friends lists, coop content and grouping soon - BE PATIENT

You can play with others but its a bit clunky...... try working together on Skype focus on overthrowing a system or forcing a revolution/civil war. You can find friends by jumping out of supercruise next to there FSD cloud.

Public groups will be coming soon...

This game is about your story first then multiplayer...

Frontier will get it right, I've ranted and raved through beta and gamma but I've always been proven wrong. This is a great game with a great company/team working on it.

Getting instanced with other players has been a perpetual issue as far as I can see - it seems very rare that anyone gets a large amount of other players in their instance even when they organise to be at the same place - it's been like this from the start. Some say it's gotten better but in my experience it has not. I can go places in Open Play that should be busy and see 1 player only. The most I ever saw was 8 or 9 and that was way back in Beta 1 IIRC. At this stage (release) I was expecting to see 20 - 30 players, easily, in busy systems... no chance! :(
