so how is the beta in vr

Choppy, but that may be the connection.....

There is an option to select 'x' supersampling - killed my framerate above x 1.0 - there was an improvement to the graphics when I selected x 1 from x 0.5 (there is x 0.5, x 1.0, x 2.0 and x 4.0 settings IIRC)

The smoke no longer moves weirdly after scooping and there are some new 'steam effects' when you overheat, in cockpit, that look cool....

I like the fact you can sell all your mapping data in one go (after traversing 100 ly to get my 100cr Type 9!!)

There are some other nice little touches, but cannot recall them at the moment...

....oh and the route mapper in the Galaxy map goes over 100ly now :)

Nosh

Only managed ten mins of testing in the station, but the super sampling x4 nearly melted my rig!
I'm running 980s in SLI but can't go past x2, and even then needed to switch to a mediumish graphics setting.
Will play around more but I'm starting to wonder if I'm actually in SLI after all. (Only seeing one card in the ED graphics settings. )

How unoptimised do you think the beta is? Such a shame it's so GPU intensive to max out graphics and super sample.
A 3k rig should be able to cope by now surely?

unplayable for me, 40 fps consistent in supercruise.

they did not fix the framerate bug (framerate capped in rendering loop if many players or objects in "instance") and they did not improve any single aspect about VR.
except for most people having a crash at F12.

are you using extended mode or direct Lirezh?

I must admit I find the VR support in the production version to be superb. I am confident by the tiime 1.1 is out of beta things will be at least comparable to 1.0

choppy mainly in busy systems but if you go far enough out its pretty smooth for me
the jump section still has the same 2 stutters

many lighting and graphical and texture quality changes for me, looks a lot better

I also have 980s in SLI and can run as far as all on ultra, SS x 1 and 2715 x 1527 and its mostly running 75 FPS for me

Not had a lot of time to play yet, but concur with the above comments. Noticed maybe a slight drop in frame rate, but at other times thought it was improved - frame rates seem almost random in ED a lot of the time anyway . Graphical and sound tweaks are nice. Looks like there's better support for custom HUD colours too (don't effect the galaxy map, for example) so that will directly benefit Rift users.

I'd like to mention, the f12 crash isn't just in the beta. It has something to do with the launcher update. Im not in the beta, and f12 still crashes the game instantly.

Is that something you think is correct? They have a bugged game rendering loop since the first Pre Alpha and did not remove the network code out of the game loop but instead tried to make their p2p load balancing better so 2D players do not notice the frame rate issues.
They can play fine at 30 fps, so why fix it ?

VR is great, just as long as you stay away from other people. Is that fine to settle with in an MMO ?
And now they add community goals and stuff, everything made to bring people together. Everyone just not those VR guys who will have to puke from judder in those systems.

I'd create another ticket but I would only get an automated response after 6-12 months asking if I still have any issues. No need to answer as the ticket gets closed automatically.

@Phier:
I can also report it's horrible in stations!
Just after the puking session in supercruise you will be happy if you can keep your eyes open in stations again. But there was consistent judder.
It's the same issue as in super cruise: other players are in your instance. And if just one of them has no good connection speed or low uplink then you will suffer a bad framerate.

Elite is the first game I can remember in all my life where framerate did depend on network latency of other players. I have never heard about a game or application built that way.

I found it to be not too bad, was at a Nav Point with a couple other CMDRs chasing wanted ships and wasn't getting the network lag lurches that I've seen on live sometimes. Still getting the same stutters in SC when it loads new planet textures. And in SC in general because there were a ton of CMDRs about it was quite choppy - that was network more than VR I think. Worst thing in beta tbh is the sound, it seems to be balanced all wrong and in stations it's choppy as hell.

Haven't tried the in game DSR settings yet, still using my old config downsampling from 1440p.

I did discover one thing totally unrelated to beta though - putting the DK2 and camera on a powered USB hub makes a huuuuge difference. Completely got rid of the little "jumps" I was getting when head tracking was going off, and seems much smoother in general.

Whoah dude. VR is already basically doubling the load on the GPU, and 2x supersampling doubles the res on each axis, which actually means 4 times the pixels. So VR + 2x supersampling is roughly EIGHT TIME the GPU load. in practice it's probably a bit more efficient than that, but you're asking a lot, even for two 980s. VR is rough stuff.

it's the same bugs in the release which is not called beta anymore.
It's in there since pre alpha.

In beta 1.1 it's just more extreme because all people start out there in one spot.
In "Release" it's the same thing if they call players to one location for a discount or fight or similar.
All those events actually mean "hey all players, come there please do something. Except VR, you stay in lonely area please or puke"

Yesterday it was fine but today i get 10-20 FPS in SuperCruise (nevermind stations) so quite unplayable. I ll ticket it later, gona test first my normal screen to rule my rig out.

Even my rig struggled with 2x and a T7 in the station.:) (7970) would like to try 1.5x (0.5x is not needed as the rift quality settings can drop it below 1)

I'll be a sad panda if these problems go live being I refuse to play elite outside of the rift. I'm way to spoiled now.

Normally I have no problems but the beta was a total judderfest in supercruise. There were several other players in LHS 3447 at the same time.

Also the community mission wanted me to sell food at a huge loss to an agricultural system that was apparently starving...

Im not sure that is exactly correct though. These issues seem quite related to this new beta testing server setup. I do not have the same issues in the main game. I have been in several spots with large number of pilots, 12+ many times and for extended periods (events with friends) and not have any lag or fps issues. I also remember the gamma start... Tons of commanders per cubic meter and perfect fps. No, while I agree that the new beta fps issues seem to be network related I also suspect they are specific to this new set up.
