So...IP/Copyright infringement from X Rebirth?

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, but I just now noticed something that seems a bit odd.

You guys remember X Rebirth? I can't believe it's taken me this long to notice (not surprising considering over 95% of the player base stopped playing it), but if you look at the front page for Elite: Dangerous (http://elite.frontier.co.uk) the header shows a strange looking planet. Also seen here:

Well I was watching a video of some X Rebirth gameplay earlier, hoping to see if it had improved at all, and noticed this:

Does anyone else see the resemblance? Did Egoshaft, I mean, Egosoft, rip off Elite?

Both ripped off Star Wars.

Lots of circles, it is what cities look like from space in the imaginary future

hmmm interesting, they aren't exactly the same are they? Might be a coincidence as there is some concept art from one of the dev diaries which show the different ways in which planet cities appear from space depending on the culture/political faction in which the planet falls into. If I can find the link I'll post it.

Coruscant from the Star Wars abomina- I mean prequels.

The "planets from space" concept art was in newsletter 2, showing how Imperial, Federal and Independent planets look different:

Ah, I didn't realize it was supposed to be a city. By the looks of it, I thought parts of the planet were molten and was part of some sort of mining operation.

Weren't there circular cities in some of footage of V'Ger in the first Star Trek movie, when it encounters the planet of the machine intelligences? I'm sure there was.

Canberra, a planned city, has that kind of layout too. Don't think it's something anyone could copyright! :p

Oh, indeed! I was just messing around with the "ripping off" comment, hehe. :D

It also makes a lot of sense that a colonized planet would have heavily planned cities, as the surface would be a fresh canvas for a space faring civilization that has already reached higher understanding of math, science and engineering. Where as an origin planet would have more varied, organic cities that grew from ancient settlements, just like our own pale blue dot.

Much as I dislike the prequels, seeing that clip again reminded me of something that I think is slightly missing from Elite.
It happens a lot but probably starting at around 25 seconds into that clip.
The speed at which details zip past in the foreground in relation to details further away. I think that difference - probably created by the use (or simulation) of a more wide angle lense - creates a dynamic sense of speed and also scale.
When I've seen the view from ships flying over the surface of the Impeccable there doesn't seem to be as drastic a difference between the perceived speed of details very close compared to those further away. And as a result the Impeccable seems smaller somehow.
Maybe the simulation of a wider angle lense (not simply adjusted fov) would help. Or perhaps there will eventually be higher res textures on the hulls so when skimming past there will be a greater sense of distance covered.
Anyone know what I mean?
Oh I don't know.
I'm rambling in a vastly off topic way.
Good evening. :)
