So, is this game just too stupid?

You'd lose the bet :)

My problem wasn't with the fine or lost ship, as much as the game design that would allow that. It was just a sidewinder, so i got a free one anyway, but it was in a system pretty far away and I had to do the return flight. But if it can happen with a sidewinder, then it can happen with a more expensive ship as well I would assume. Why have an auto-system if it can't be used?

Every game has annoying bugs, but none that are that ridiculous stay in a game long. Also, even if it weren't a bug, it makes no sense. The station scanned me, and auto-docked me, and then I was approved for auto-launch. In what scenario is killing someone appropriate there?? A fine for messing with traffic maybe, but to kill them...that's really just stupid. If I was not approved to land and entered the station, I'd expect to be shot down, but this is totally opposite of that. They had control of my ship, and then killed me... LOL
Well that auto control does sometimes smash ones ship. Usually not, even with some biggie like Cutter. But it really needs babysitting, you need to be ready to take over. And thats why you should learn how to fly your ship without computer aid.

So, I'd like to give my take-away from this discussion. I feel like the game has bugs, but most are not as deadly as the one I experienced, and the one I did experience is rare.

Easy solutions is to dock and launch manually. But just as a side note, as a new player here, but a veteran of many games, I've never seen an auto system or a flight path system not work, so I would just assume a system like this just works. My best guess is it almost always does work, and I was just unlucky.

People have described missions that are quirky. That's fine, it's just one mission, not a game feature. I've been gaming for several decades, I expect some content to not always work properly, but I also expect the underlying mechanic to work. Again, it looks like I was just unlucky.

I played Eve for a good number of years, so dealing with death in this game is really not an issue, LOL. I was never worried about the free ship I lost or the small amount of credits. I left Eve because of the players, not the game.

I'd like to thank everyone for their input. It was very helpful and I learned a few things I'd never probably learn in game. I think I'll keep at it and see if I have some fun.

I didn't touch any controls, but I was afk. I was petting my cat if you must know, and he didn't care that my ship blew up either.

And as for the rest, when I make a post on a forum, I tend to like to follow it to see if some really useful information comes out of it. There are some here that have been helpful, and some that just blame or insult me. Every gaming community has those, so no real big deal.

The underlying premise is I'm just trying to see if I should invest my time in this game or not, by getting responses from people who are actually playing it. I'm not sure why that is a bad thing to some of you, but I really don't care either, that's the way I work.
Ah, the cat. Yes, that would do it. :)

About 90% of the time the auto launch/auto dock will work perfectly.

You just need to be there for when the 10% happens :)

The same goes for supercruise assist. The module doesn't care if there is a planet right in the path to your destination, it will happily go straight to it. You don't die of that, but it's better to keep a watch on it.

Anyway, since you were petting a cat, it's perfectly excusable.

Also, since a cat was involved, I suspect he is the reason you crashed.

Well your problem is kind of Fdevs fault. I mean to make game more enticing for newbies they default installed advanced docking computer to newbie ships. When I started playing such trinket was not installed (in fact not available at all, you could get docking computer but that did not help you in launching...)...So one NEEDED to learn how to dock and how to launch. Current situation would be fine if said trinkets would work all the time. But well they do work most of time. And at that point when they do NOT work, you need some basic flying skills. Like what older players needed to learn at start.

It takes, IMO (only been playing for 10.5 months now), about 25 to 50 trips to really see what the game has to offer, and then that's just the tip of the iceberg.

This game does use a lot of small dirty tricks against the players. To waste their time and to make them angry. These tricks are not bugs, it's by design.
But FDev will never confirm it. This problems (like your autolaunch) will appear especially in the initial phase of any activity.
As Majic-12 said, never trust Elite Dangerous.
So - if you wanna play this game - you must be prepared for this things.

In that case: if you're around the core systems (Sol and neighbours) and someone offers you a nice and easy small cargo/data delivery contract to Alpha Centauri with a suspiciously high payout - dont do it. At least not until you have a nice movie queued up in Netflix or some housework to do.

Ran one of those yesterday while doing laundry. 😁

I'm leaving a station for only the 5th time as I just started playing. I use Autolaunch, just like every other time. It puts me in a queue, even though there is no one else around. Queue time runs out, and the station fines me, then kills me. Now it puts me very far away from where I was.

If this is the stupidity I can expect, please let me know so I don't waste anymore time...

ty in advance.
you can always accelerated to cancel auto launch/Autoland procedure.you don't need to boost out of the mail slot like i see many people do in open/pg/solo.,just tap the gas pedal gently i use start at 30 then get nearer & align to the slot to get the accelerator up to 90

Haha, one time I activated it a bit late.. timer showed 5s, 4s, 3s.. headed straight to a landable planet, bounced off the surface.. survived!

Well, you use autolaunch. Thats the mistake.

Autolaunch is usually fine, OP was unlucky. Unlucky can kill you in the early stages before you know what to look out for.

I remember not understanding why my ship almost melted several times. It was when I didn't know that you couldn't charge the frameshift drive while you were fuel scooping. I've never seen any documentation which tells you that, I just had to figure it out. Crucial little bits of knowledge like this become second nature until you almost forget you've learned them.

Is it rubbish game design and documentation? Yes.
Do I enjoy playing enough to put up with it? Yes.

Learning curve, they gave you spaceship, it just did not had up to date manual included :D Maybe those in Pilots federation are cheapskates and give out second hand Sidewinders :D

Oh yeah, I remember the first few times I over budgeted the power on my ship. As soon as I brought out my hard points the entire ship went dead. I thought the enemy had some fancy weapon that was disabling my ship. Glad I finally figured that one out.
