So lets get this straight.. Our commander names are no longer unique?

Is this categorically true? Do Microsoft control their platform so tightly that FD couldn't even have had the game allocate a custom string to the player's character and display that in place of the GamerTag?
No, they don't. If they did you wouldn't be able to name your characters in games such as Diablo 3 or Skyrim. I don't understand why a named character in this game couldn't be aliased back to your gamer tag.

Well, that all encouraged me to check out my doppelganger, I did figure it was an account I set up years ago and then lost the details.

Turns out he plays Dead Rising, so I guess it's not me !!!!

So what's the easiest way to register a reservation for my name on XBox, which I never plan on using? Do I have to pay for XBox Live?
This is...sad lol

You are so serious about this. Nobody on Xbox cares about you.

When the Xbox community found out in June 2015 that PC players have explored a fair amount of the galaxy already, and some may possibly have identical usernames, we collectively said...

Jenner

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Reminds me of how everyone used to think that Jenner Orbital was named after me.

I mean, ah... it totally is of course! Yup. Myyyy station. Fer sure.

This. Why XBox players should use their gamertag in game, instead of choosing an available CMDR name as alias? It's outrageous, FD.
Please can some devs explain this?

(I just checked my CMDR name and somebody already registered it as a gamertag)

It has been explained - read the thread.

It never ceases to amaze how people here can go absolutely berserk about absolutely nothing. :)

Never under estimate the power gamers have to make mountains....after all, a complaining gamer is a happy gamer. I for one love this thread, made my day yesterday. Not sure what has been more funny, the genuine anger over this or the misinterpretation of some posters sarcasm sending some into tantrums lol

Haha you are lol

Just to be clear what I think is silly is that someone on Xbox would try and imitate you. Not that having your own name be unique and stay that way, is not important.

...

It may come as a surprise to you, but bear with me here... People sometimes do silly things. ;)

I coincide then. You are correct. I do think you don't have anything to worry about from the Xbox side but even saying that you are correct. People do "silly things".

When I first got the game I chucked in a couple of hundred quid to become an Alpha Backer. I wanted to get in and have a look and it didn't even occur to me to have a "name", too trivial to even think about at the time.
So I am CMDR ALPHA BACKER #57746 which I presume is what Frontier assigned to me when I bought the game, doesn't bother me in the slightest.
I've had a couple of people ask why I picked a name like that, I suppose they think I am trying to boast about being an Alpha Backer.

Is that why I see that? haha wow. That's actually kind of neat. I've seen a handful of systems by "backer #4454" or whatever and always wondered how that happened.

Nor should it be our problem ... I already have my reserved account name stolen .. what's next ?

I'm fairly certain that the main sticking point was something along the lines of: XB gamer tag "BigDaddy" tries to create a new cmdr "BigDaddy" and is told no can do pal-o, taken. M$ doesn't want XB games to tell people their gamertag is taken, so has a rule that it is allowed, and damn the torpedos. FD now has to accommodate BigDaddy in a way they would normally decline. Out of their hands.

But then are there gamer tags called "Jameson" which Elite restricts? What about "Braben"? Surely there's a way they could have done this that ignored gamer tags and made the names unique, I don't know, I'm just guessing about the back-end. It's not an issue I'm campaigning against, but it certainly feels wrong. People worrying about reputation are almost certainly overstating the problem, but if videos started surfacing of ObsidianAnt griefing, combat logging, Exploiting, or acting in a cretinous way (flagrant racism or simply trolling) it would seem like a pretty poor decision in hindsight, Yes?
