Newcomer / Intro So much to learn. Here: Supercruise

Nearly 2000 hours of ED, but still a noob . I recently learned by accident, that I don´t have to wait for the counter to go down to 1 to 2 seconds to leave supercruise at a station. I can hit the button when I am under 1000 km, the distance is the same with 5 seconds or 1 second left. 4 seconds wasted at thousands of stations, USS and other targets. So much time of my life for nothing 😢. There coud be more...

I also found out that once your speed drops to about near 1Mm/s as you are approaching the target, you can hit full throttle and you still wont overshoot. Saves you split seconds at most though.

I think, I lost the knowlegde when I switched to the 7-seconds-rule. So I watched the timer in the center and not the blue bars to the left.

If you have locked your destination, look on the left, there are two bars for distance and speed, and the alignment indicator. To successfully disengage, both bars have to be in the blue and the alignment indicator must be lit up.

Once your speed bar on the left is in the blue zone, you can safely hit full throttle, and you still will be slow enough to disengage when you are withhin distance (with around 1 second left on the clock). (For most stations, the blue zone starts at your 1Mm/s.) Actually, you can hit full throttle even earlier, below 1.25 Mm/s for those "standard 1Mm drop outs".

If you had been approaching your destination at 75% throttle, you can safely go back to 100% throttle when you’re closer than 7.xxx Mm away, if you can quickly drop out of SC when the notification pops up. I do this all the time. If that’s too stressful, wait till within 6.xxx Mm before throttling up.

As Maelstrom says - once cruising, I watch the speed bar on the left. When that goes blue, I go to full throttle - and trigger the drop when the 'safe to disengage' message flashes up. Seems quicker, and you have to respond, so it's more exciting :)

1000 seconds roughly equals a quarter of an hour, but it all sums up. Imagine the amount of your life where you have been gazing at progress bars.

Btw. 2000 hours equals roughly a quarter of the time a person on average spend in primary and secondary school during a life. No wonder it's getting easier to fly those spaceships :alien:

There are all sorts of tips and tricks for faster station arrival, from planet skimming to SCA "exploit" (well I don't think the insta-drop was a design feature ;) ). Personally I feel that controllability and consistency far outweigh the former and I won't waste a slot for the latter - I just use the 75% throttle binding and approach to exit facing the slot - predictable, reliable and not actually slow.

Ditto, majority of the time when I try to shave a few seconds, it ends up a right foxtrot-ultra-bravo-alpha-ranger. (thank board censorship)
