So rare trading has proven very lucrative to me. Help for newbs

Trading wasn't really working out well for me even after the patch. I just have to learn which systems deliver to which (like extraction goes to refinery systems)
Mining was fairly profitable but good god I lost so many braincells trying to drink away the boredom.
Bounty hunting was, is, and probably will be forever fun for me. I just don't get as lucky with big bounties showing up.

However, rare trading is most likely what I will do for a while as an intermediate source of income. If anyone is frustrated with poor gains, this is probably where you should go. With my 40t Cobra I can make 500k-1M per round trip which honestly isn't too bad time wise (I have yet to time myself).

For those interested in making fairly easy money, try out this route. (I take no credit for this, I saw it on another post and can't remember who said it, but thank you sincerely)

Leesti, Lave, Orrere, Diso, and Zaonce <-----> 39 Tauri, Fujin, Wolf 1301, Witchhaul

Basically those are 2 clusters of rare commodity locations where you can stock up on all of the nearby systems that sell rares, then take it to the other cluster which happens to be around 170 LY away (the "sweet spot" for rares to be sold back to anyone). Once there sell all of the rares you have been toting around and stock up on more from the other nearby systems, then just take it back to the first cluster where you started. Profits will be great. The navigation tab on the galaxy map will help immensely. Just search for one of the systems in the cluster 170 LYs away (after you stock up), zoom out until you see the web growing out from your position. You can wait for it load more routes closer but you will most likely have to plan jumps in stages. I usually plan when I'm fuel scooping (don't worry about interdictions as it will force you out of the map to deal with it)

Hopefully this helps a few who were struggling with the grind for cash. This at least makes it feel less grindy imo. Also it might be good to have exploration tools on your ship as you will almost certainly run into quite a few unexplored system and the extra cash is nice for fuel/repair/amm or just more savings.

Thank you for this. Since the final nerf introducing the illogical cap on rare goods, I have searched for something that could render rare goods trading viable again.

IS it worthwhile in an adder, any ideas on cost's / profit (approx) thanks so much for the tips though ;)

Hi Cmdrs,

Rare commodities are good to earn starting money. So you can go up to bigger ships, like Type 6 or Cobra. I make around 2.3 Million cr on a roundtrip. I travel from Lave to Tarach Tor and sourrounding Systems with rares. And the most important thing, ist fun... it takes up to 2 hours for a roundtrip.

Happy Christmas Day to all of you !!!

It's probably worth it with even a sidewinder. You pay different amounts for each rare but usually it's dirt cheap like a few hundred or a couple thousand. After travels each one you sell will be worth 15-20k each, so it's a fairly large profit gain per ton. There's one I saw that was being sold for 24k a ton. Sold it for around 45k. Just 1 item, 20k profit.

And if you invest in a good FSD travel time will be greatly reduced. My cobra can go 13LY laden and it honestly doesn't feel like it takes up much time. It's a job you can easily do while doing something else like watching videos too.

Very worthwhile in an adder, its very efficient and the class A modules are not expensive, and fuel costs are minimal.
- sell the class 3 shield generator and buy a class 2 shield generator for in the size 2 compartiment
- buy 2x a 8T for in the class 3 compartiments + 1x 4T cargo for in the class 2 compartiment
- buy a fuel scope

Now you have 20T of cargo space.... which is easier to fill with the current quantity of available rare goods...

As soon as possible buy a FSD type A drive !!!! and have a 18 ly jump range and enjoy the profits.

If you want to upgrade to a cobra after that, make sure you have a few million balance otherwise you end up with a lesser vehicle

So... Adder, stripped down of everything and cargo space installed is... 22 cargo space?
with a rough profit sale of 17k, gives 374k profit.
Minus fuel (not too bad in an Adder I'd imagine?) The time it would take to vacuum around all the items you need, then again, for only 22 cargo space, not too long, might fill up fast with just Diso 10 items max (I've seen so far) and Orreve at 16 items.
Way acm Fujin gives 10 items, Wolf1301 11.
As you upgrade to a Cobra, you can still fill up with items before starting the trek.

Once you get an upgraded ship/FSD and want something a bit more roaming than just shuttling back and forth, you can do a fun loop with;
Lave
Orreve
Diso
Zaonce
Leesti
Anduliga (maybe skip, far from nav)
Any Na
Arouca
Chi Eridani
Kappa Fornacis
Tanmark
39 Tauri
Geras(maybe skip, far from nav)
Fujin
Witchhaul
Wolf 1301
Momus Reach
Havasupai
Kachirigin
Kamorin
Mukusubii
Vanayequi
Heike
Vidavanta
Helvetitj
Borasetani
Cherbones
Shinrarta Dezhra
Jaradharre
Lave

Just checking the distance to sell 180LY across from the other side of the ring, and just keep circling the area. Make a note of the prices as you jump, and in the even bigger ships, if room, you can bump stuff over to the next system in the route (though they do tend to be Agri worlds more often than not).

Only downside to keep doing the loop is you're faction will always be a bit meh as you're not sitting in one location doing much, and if you DO get destroyed, that's an awful lot of cargo you've just lost. But at least this way, you get to see a lot of the galaxy.

been in eranin and trying to stock up the eranin whiskey thingie..Didnt get it higher then 10.even after doing a couple trade runs nearby. So what am i missing??

Hmmm... If Sunamo somehow could be included in the trip... Last time I was there, it had 28T rares. Thats a pretty big chump of goodies.

But otherwise, this thread is a win! GJ peeps.

The point of this thread ;)
IIRC, since they capped rares you won't get anymore rares from a station you've bought from until you've sold it, so once you've bought your 10t of whiskey you need to move onto the next rare trade station, buy more rares, move onto the next station, repeat until full & then travel ~130+ LYs to another bunch of rare trade stations to sell your current stuff & buy some different rare's :).
It's a good way to make a stack of cash & explore part of the galaxy, I'm looking forwards to getting back into this, helping some rebels against the empire atm.
.
The hardest part was actually plotting a route as their have been many dozens of rare trade stations discovered! :), I hadn't gotten around to it but Bokugo & Jyve have kindly provided a couple of routes
.
.
Good job guys btw (+rep for you 2) :), anyone planned a route yet that includes all or nearly all the rare trade stations? :D

I also trade rares but in a rather more open way.

I have a Cobra stripped down for Cargo (56 tons at full capacity).

starting from any of the rare systems, listed in this thread -

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=63119

I collect as much of the rare cargo as I can then check Thrudds page to see which other systems with rares are nearby

http://www.elitetradingtool.co.uk/

I then check the system view for the destination system to see the station type, this allows me to compile a side trade using regular commodities, good exports and imports between station types can be found usingt he infographic here :

http://imgur.com/QsxScn1

when I get to the next rare system I sell the regular commodities, making 30-40k normally then collect the next batch of rares.

I continue like this until I've filled up the Cobra then again use Thrudds tool to determine a system with rares about 180LY from where I am

http://www.elitetradingtool.co.uk/

For the longer (above 50LY) jumps I use the route planner here :

http://www.miggy.org/games/elite-dangerous/routes/

for shorter jumps (or for 50LY sections within long jumps) I use the in game route planner optimised for fastest routes.

My cobra only has upgrades for cargo capacity, FSD (currently B class) and Fuel scoop (A class), I never buy fuel and have a jump range of about 16.5LY fully laden.

I'm not generally in system very long between jumps but if I am then I'm pretty good at evading interdiction.

I make about 750k of each hold full of rares + about another 250k from the side trades.

Will be moving up to a T6 next, then probably a T7

It's a nice way to see quite a lot of the galaxy whilst building up a good chest of cash for when I want to get a combat ship going

I've been doing a similar route to the OP, with a few different stations added in. I was doing great in my 40T Cobra, but once I upgraded to a Type 6, I was going back with a half empty cargo hold. The profits were still great, but there was no point in upgrading my ship as the Cobra did it a lot faster for a lot cheaper and was a lot more fun to fly.

Firstly this is an awesome thread. Just have to put my observation in though, I bought out all the Azure Milk and Leesti Evil thing at Leesti, then logged off for a few hours. When I came back, the rares were restocked (I was parked at George Lucas in Leesti).

I've just gotten to Altair and bought some Altair skin and logged out for the night... let's see if there are more skins tomorrow!

I followed what john111 suggested. I had already had an Adder and sunk about 80k out of my poor 150k bank account into an improved FSD and cargo holds. I did the run from Leesti with 16T of Azure Milk and Leesti Evil. Selling at Altair, I made just over 230k (sorry I'm logged out now and didn't take notes). The trip did take a long time... probably about 70 minutes just one way, but I stopped at 2 stations and scanned a bunch of exploration objects along the way too, probably could shave 20 minutes off that time easily. For a small craft I don't think 200k an hour is that bad, beats low level bulletin board missions and bounties. All in all though, one trip is enough to cover my costs and get me some profit... next trip is all profit.

While I did use this route (prior to this thread) [ and i believe THIS is the original source @ reddit ]..

.. it felt like cheating. The payouts on this are just too high compared to everything I've done during the previous days.
With an eagle, 90k in pocket and 6 cargo space, I did this route to check it out. After returning back to Lave I could afford a fully decked adder with good modules and 20 cargo space.
Then I just loaded the adder with stuff from leesti and went to fujin again.

3 trips and I'm 1.8mil ahead.

Compared to hours of looking for profitable missions, trading routes, bounties. It feels like cheating. Just with the adder, it's easy 600k per hour.
If you look at influence in Fuji, Leesti, Lave etc.. you can see that everyone is doing this. The factions are already expanding outside of the systems, because they sit at 99% in their home system.

I made my money, and will deck out the adder with exploration gear and go into the great beyond. Running to Fujin is slightly mindless. Sadly, with current ingame tools, finding other, profitable traderoutes is more than tricky.
I don't think I'd devote more of my time to literally 'slave' at the Fujin route to get an ASP (and gear!).
