So the Guardians are in fact Thargoid and..

Let's be honest, this has all the makings of a standard space opera story.

As such the chances of The Guardians & Thargoids being linked are much higher than them not being linked.

All I hope is that my newly found allegiance to the Alliance will result in me having some slightly different gameplay options over just shooting them.

...the ships we are encountering are their Biological AI Ships. Thargoids are either long time dead or remotely guiding the AI ships from a far off permit locked area of the Milky Way.

Evidence in the Spoiler

The ancient sites revealed details about the Guardians… here are some important extracts.

“This led to a surge in weapons development, with biological warfare quickly established as the weapon of choice. An arms race began, focused on the development of biological agents and various counter measures”

“Warfare was conducted using automated battle fleets. At first these were controlled by the Guardians via brain implants, but later they became entirely autonomous. In the early stages of the war the Guardians fought each other directly, but within a decade - and after much loss of life - most of the fighting was conducted remotely. Soldiers were deployed only to occupy areas that had been captured by autonomous or remote vehicles, and eventually were not used at all.”

“As well as biological warfare agents, they also created creatures expressly for use in battle, and these remained effective even into the modern era.”

The major, real proof, comes from the fact that the Ancient Relics are the only other object that the ‘Mothership console accepts’ Which indicates the same Tech

What I draw from this is that the Ancient sites are in fact – Thargoid – The ships we are encountering are the AI Biological Ships and Weapons.
At this point I feel a little sad that all of our insect friends maybe dead – however I do have a glimmer of hope that maybe this information still holds true “most of the fighting was conducted remotely. Soldiers were deployed only to occupy areas that had been captured by autonomous or remote vehicles, and eventually were not used at all”. So maybe, just Maybe, our insect buddies are still around but sat in front of computers directing the AI from afar… in a permit area of our galaxy?

Do you have a similar theory?

Biological Warfare Agents - Anthrax, Influenza, Bruellosis, Smallpox, Ebola, Botulism and Ricin all come to mind. I suspect Guardian Biological Warfare was similar. However, I would point to this particular entry:

"Entry 11: One area I was unsure about until now was whether the guardians used their abilities in genetic and biological manipulation to advance their technology and weapons. While some might argue that our technology is equal to the Guardians, I would counter that their integration of such technology at a societal level gave them a greater knowledge of its application. As well as biological warfare agents, they also created creatures expressly for use in battle, and these remained effective even into the modern era."

I suspect the Guardians may have created the first Thargoids as a "battle creature" which in turn turned on their creators and finished what prolonged battle had begun - wiping out the species.

I've long suspected the scans from the Unknown Ships might well be looking for evidence of "Guardians" or their technology.

I think the guardians *may* be thargoids. In canon there are two factions of thargoids. One is peaceful and the other removes their fear glands in order to produce fearless and emotionless killing machines. The guardians may be the former and the thargoids that attacked the federation ships are the latter. It may also be true that the gaurdians are the other, very similar, insect species mentioned in the dark wheel who hate the thargoids. The other species is described as being so similar it takes a keen eye to tell them apart, which would suggest a common ancestor. I don't think, however, that the bases we have found are gaurdian bases, but are Thargoid of the violent flavor. Reason I say this is because I went to visit the active base yesterday in open and when you install a UA, a UP, and a Link into it it gives you that nice little star map. But, if you instead install guardian relics it gets REALLY MAD. It will spew out a jet of super hot something that melts your SRV's like you're too close to a star, and it emits explosive blasts that does additional damage to your vehicles. His would suggest to me that whoever built it has tech that is compatible with the guardians, but they don't like them very much. This makes me think the guardians are the closely related species from the dark wheel, but are not the thargoids themselves. Maybe the guardians will make an appearance in 2.4 to help out.

WARNING: spoiler for new alien base puzzle content ...

It's almost impossible to keep up over the last few days but it seems that if you give the machine at the heart of the new "Thargoid" base an ancient Guardian relic instead of one of the UA/UP/UL objects of, presumably, Thargoid origin then it reacts in much the same way that a p%ssed up Millwall fan would react if you gave him a West Ham t-shirt to wear!

Where that falls down is, Thargoids were an Alien Race - So Either the Thargoids were Guardians or the Guardians created the Thargoid race? Because these ships are Thargoid ships according to FD

It is a very short mention, but it is very interesting. David talks about the alien presence in ED and where the story might be headed. Start from 3 mins 45.

Disclaimer...until I can find the particular interview, don't take any of the following at face value!
I vaguely remember another interview, but I can't find it, where he talks about a potential third alien species, who threaten all life in the galaxy. Our relationship with the Thargoids will determine whether they help us, or hinder us in the fight against these new guys.
Someone else may remember the actual interview and correct details!

Surely "The Guardians" were the ship-launched fighters - like "The Engineers" were the engineers?

It was a very clever title - FD started talking about ship launched fighters and NPC pilots and everyone assumed they were the "guardians" and then ... SURPRISE ... the actual "Guardians" turned up (the race responsible for the ancient ruin sites).

Edit: for clarity ... they didn't actually "turn up" in person, but the ruin sites did and the logs founds at the ruin sites refer to them by name as the "Guardians"

Well I can't say that I saw that on a Galnet article, must have missed it. Maybe someone who doesn't come on the forums or read reddit or trawl uToob has already found and destroyed the boss Thargoid and discovered the gateways to other galaxies....

Seriously though, was that info buried in a hundreds-of-pages-long thread or what?

...... [insert emoji for being really urined-off here] .......

Did you not follow the Ruin Story? :)

The what? ............. Was that in the 800-odd page 4th thread or the 200-odd page 10th thread? - gimme a break.

This supports my theory that Thargoids were created as war-beasts by the Guardians, and the ship scans we've encountered as hyperdiction are them looking for Guardian remnants.
I'd still be curious to know what happens if they hyperdict a ship full of Guardian artifacts.

What if humanity is what is left of the guardians? The civil war took such a toll that civilization basically had to start from scratch. The thargoids could be the remnant of the biological ai they created for warfare which would explain why they were hostile to us in the last war. They were possibly just doing what they were programmed to do, kill the enemy. Now they are back and all the scans are for determining if we are the side they were programmed to fight or not.

The thargoids are very likely a product of the gardians weapon research. They may have started very simply and as their AIs got better and the tech got better, the biological weapons took a path of their own. After all, by definition, life evolves so the thargoids could be the evolved version of those gardian bioweapons.

That's a good theory, a little out there but interesting... Plus one data set about the gardians suggest we may have a common ancestor !

"reads thread title"

Please grab a dictionary when it's convenient and look up the word fact. I don't think it means what you think it means. It does NOT apply to theorycrafting.
