So the stations have closable blast doors on the front?

My guess has always been that they are an emergency measure in case the force field fails. The doors would slam shut before all the air rushed out.

I had a bug in a station yesterday, that when it released me I got a instant fine for blocking a landing pad, as I flew toward the letter box the count down timer for blocking the landing pad was still ticking down even though I had by now completely left the station, as I got to jump range the count down timer reached zero, the station went hostile and started attacking me till I hauled ass out of range... which was a royal pain in the ass because I was off out Bounty Hunting so had to travel to another station to pay my fines :/

I think that has been fixed for 1.1.

At the risk of asking a really stupid question, if they have no use in game and are meant to be locked open why not just make them a fixed part of the model? :)
Because then there wouldn't be a surprise moment at some point in the future when they close unexpectedly for story/mechanics reasons... :)
 
Hey! Just to add to this. Long ago back in Beta I saw these doors operate. At the time there was a bug where stations would occasionally disappear and reappear. When they did this the doors would start closed and open.

This happened to me a few times when trying to dock. They have sound effects and everything. It's very cool!
 
I'm hoping some future events create instances where doors are closed for some reason, and stay closed for awhile (wars, infestations, etc) - could make for some fun gameplay.

And rogue stations that fire on absolutely ANYone within a certain distance, due to a hostile take over, etc.
.
And stations that pretend to be friendly but then go completely berserk - wait - we have that one currently (as a bug, but still - it makes for a fun panic boost away when they start firing!!!)
