So this game nearly killed me

I wish i had reacted faster with my xbox dvr but i was too caught up in the moment. I come out of ftl (throttled down of course) and i see myself fly THROUGH a star. At first i thought it was a graphical glitch but it still made my heart skip a beat. Im gathering my bearings when i hear my heat alarm going off and i notice my temp is already at 90%. I quickly throttle away and look back and see that there were two stars right next to each other. Ive been in several systems like this but ive never spawned in one that sent me through a star. I was under the impression the game isnt supposed to spawn you into the middle of danger. If i had stepped away for even a bathroom break while in ftl i would be dead right now. Im sitting on million of exploration data and im less than 650 lys from sag a*, im not interested in dying right now.

Wait til you drop into a close orbiting trinary system!

If you're unlucky enough to end up in the centre of the 3 stars you won't even be able to see a way out, and will generally need to pull up while simultaneously turning every non essential module off to lower heat, especially the fuel scoop.

It's one of the few things out there that adds any risk for explorers.

Just remember, never ever ever answer the phone/door/wife or take a bathroom break while in hyperspace, there's a good chance you'll return to the rebuy screen!

If you had taken a bathroom break during any FTL travel into a system, you'd be dead, because your ship always spawns right in front of a star, and will continue travelling towards it unless you manually navigate it away.

Spawning into a binary star system is a hazard that all explorers need be ready for - it's why you should be carrying heatsinks.

The game's called Elite: Dangerous for a reason. Be prepared for danger.

The first time getting out of witch space through a star is quite impressive.

Random comments:
Heat is something to consider while outfitting an exploration ship.

The hyperjump is basically the only time while exploring where you really should stay close to the controls of your ship. After a few thousand jumps you hear when the ship is about to drop back to super cruise, giving you a short amount of time to do something else.

If you need to take a break, just fly away from the star in super cruise in a direction where absolutely no other object is in your path or just fly out to around 500 ls from the star and drop to normal space.

You always move in super cruise, you don't stop. Even with throttle to 0 you move forward. Coming out of hyperspace with throttle to 0 only means it will take longer to hit that star in front of you.

Jumping with throttle to 0 is actually not the best way to jump. Lean how to jump with throttle to 100% and how to maneuver quickly out of the danger zone. The only stars where throttle to 0 has an advantage are neutron stars and white dwarfs since their body exclusion zone is much larger than the stelar body. After a few hundred neutron stars you will know how to jump into those systems with 100% throttle.
Why not using 0%? Because it will take time to accelerate and while accelerating the ship is not very maneuverable.

Fly a hot and unmaneuverable ship while jumping into systems with 0% throttle is a perfect recipe for overheating.

Fly save and good luck CMDR, I wish you the best and a save return home.

Trinary with a neutron star....

Welcome to hell as you pitch/roll to avoid the binaries then fly full on into the neutron you didn't see (before 2.2 changes to NS)

This game definitely throws you into danger. Which is why any sane explorer doesnt go take a bathroom break during the only dangerous moment there is. Just jump, fly clear and THEN pause...

You can throttle down during hyperjump and it'll slow down upon exiting automatically. ;)

That only works for me if I'm in game. If I alt-tab to another window during hyperspace, my throttle jumps right back up. Even if I zeroed the throttle before switching windows.

Never-ever-ever go AFK on hyperspace jump. Or supercruise, for that matter. Find a safe moment to drop into normal space...or better yet just log out of the game temporarily. :p

I've had this happen a few times. It still makes me jump when it happens (and it's moments like that which make the game :) ).

I did encounter one trinary while out exploring. That was a fun few minutes...

Had a similar experience on my second account yesterday, returning back from TRA X-1 for a passenger mission. 13000ly into the 13800ly return, I got too close to a DA and started cooking. "Critical damage" warnings, etc, etc.....

After about 5 minutes of panic, I managed to SC away from it, with hull at 50% and most modules down to about 70. I was fortunate enough to have had the foresight to load up on AFMU refuel materials, so I got everything crucial to return back to 100%. Then tip-toed the rest of the way back.

I figure I was about 2 minutes from wasting 3 days' worth of playing, and in-game "loss" would have been 3.5M in data, 500k for the ship, and not getting the 22M for the mission.

Good times.

I've ran to the kitchen for something when the spool up starts, knowing you have about a minute before you get to your jump destination.

But Murphy is a sick bast. A minute may seem like a lot, but when you get your beverage from the fridge, then your wife asks you a question.... time to cook...

I jumped to a system and as I entered, it seemed to me I had come through the star. I had a star in front and behind me. temp rose fast to 127%. panic set in. oops n oh no I thought. dropped heat sink and started moving away, temp was rising again so I dropped another HS. after I had moved far enough away for my temps to return to normal, I turned round to see what I had jumped into. 2 stars within 2ls apart. as well as a further 3 stars within 5ls. I certainly wont go back to that system, 90 g canis majoris . if you go there be very careful :)

You cannot die in ED, you just respawn at your last location, there are no death mechanics in ED for now, maybe there never will be.

well one can set throttle to zero whilst in the "tunnel" and the ship will stop after dropping out of witch-space. If you are not extremly unlucky to drop in the middle of binarys or worse, you'll be safe with your bathroom break ; )

And some more heatsinks. You can't have enough heatsinks if you are going out for any length of time.

You can throttle back to zero as soon as the FSD countdown starts, then you come out of FSD and drop to 30km/s, that give's you a reasonable amount of time provided you don't end up in the OPs situation.
