So this is how new players are greeted?

Spawned in in my new Sidewinder, fresh from the factory and started adventuring. At my fourth hour of playing, some scumbag in a big ass spaceship, blew me to pieces inside a spacestation. And that pewed me off big time. I represented no threat and no target value for him - I was simply an easy kill...

Now - before everybody gets worked up on game mechanics etc - stop up and think: is this really how we should greet new players?

EVE Online suffers severely of the lack of fresh blood in the playerbase, due to exact this problem: old time players having a scavenger party on green rookies. If we are to make Elite the most awesome gaming experience for all parties, we must avoid slaying, what clearly is a rookie player.

The loudmouths will probaly claim, that a kill is a kill. I beg to differ...

Sorry, but sadly it happens. in all online games there is a small percentage of the members who are just idiots/immature/bored and kill newbies for a laugh. yes its annoying and frustrating

I hope you had enough cr left to pay the insurance, please bear in mind we aren't all idiots like that, most people are friendly and will only fire if you are wanted or attack them.

Elite is as the name suggests, Dangerous.

Whoever did that to you deserves to be destroyed, no doubt about it. I could suggest that you play "Online - Solo" if you are dead set against this kind of thing happening.

In the final release the station would retaliate against such actions as you were within the no fire zone but that is not what is happening currently, and as such people are taking advantage of this.

Some people get their kicks from destroying those weaker than themselves, hoping to get exactly this reaction out of people.

Pick yourself up. Be more aware of your surroundings and be careful out there.

There will be tutorials for new players and there will be fully functioning station defences in the future which will protect new players. You can also restrict yourself to portions of space that are regarded as higher security.

The truth of the matter is however, that you could be destroyed at any time. That is what makes the game exciting for me.

Other opinions are available.

Hejsa!

Which station were you in?

I believe stations with a clear jurisdiction (Federation, etc) will fire on ships using their weaponry within the "no fire zone" which includes the docking bay.

Those stations under anarchy will only shoot back if the station itself is damaged.

The station should have responded. It won't stop him killing you in the first place but it should have blown him out of the sky for doing so inside the station.

If anything I think its better that new players learn what the game can be like early on, its certainly better when you only lose a sidewinder compared to losing something more expensive too.

1. It is beta and it is going to get a new release in less than a week so people get shooty (gamma and release will be different because of consequences).
2. As someone pointed out above you may have been in a lawless space station in which case: Do you get annoyed if you moved to Somalia and get shot at by the local rebels?

This is not indicative of how the finished game will develop. He would have been blown to pieces by the station defences, got a bounty on his head and negative reputation with the system.

The chances of this occuring in the finished game are very slim so have no fear :)

Also bear in mind that with the reputation system coming into the game on release most people won't be playing like this at all, but there will always be some idiots.

Here is a link to the Reputation system http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6279

You should look through the DDA archives to see how much things will change, there is also an ignore function coming in so if you remember that commanders name you can add him when you start, or if it happens again it will only happen the once.

If you see him again, ram him in you sidewinder :D

Are you sure it was a player or AI?

Most players know its certain suicide to fire within a station if all game mechanics are functioning, I've seen rogue AI firing in stations, they don't last long but they seem to be less aware of the implications.

Chin up commander, issues like this are being addressed inhouse I imagine, things can only get better right?

The NPCs dont care how long you been playing and neither does the humans.

Its a beta, people are testing, theres no consequences for actions, certainly not long term so people will do anything from random killings to flying headon into the side of a spacestation just to see what happens/for a laugh.

Tyler Durden would have a field day, I am Jack's virtual ego...
Death can come from the hands of reasonless NPC intercepts as easily as PC destruction. Best to get used to dying for the most whimiscal reason, it'll make things more pleasant in the long run :)

If I'd passed you, I would have said "Hi" over comms. Who knows, I may have. :)

For future reference...

Pay attention to the governmental structure of the systems you visit. Learn which ones are safer, and which are riskier.

And I do mean "future reference". In today's beta, there are currently only two types of system...

Anarchy, and Not-Anarchy.

Well, and there's Hermitage. That's one big messed up system right there.

Okay, THREE types of system.

Anarchy, Not-Anarchy, and crazy old Hermitage.

In the final version of the game, there will be a sliding scale of risk, in terms of system government (or lack thereof). Get used to looking now. As per the original game, by the time you know you've taken a wrong turn somewhere, it may be too late!

Have fun out there! Oh, and never EVER sink all of your credits into a single cargo load. Always have backup funds to cover your insurance costs when you die, and a little extra as recovery capital.

Megablam; good to meet you, and welcome to the game and forums.

Eve online new subs (are) suffering from this behavior; and this lowers purchasers of accounts. The same will happen to us.

The good news;...This upcoming beta will begin dealing with these problems.
The PKer's will tell you they'll only find some other exploit. So we'll see..;it will probably be a slow problem solution.

The quicker FD deals with the sociopaths; the more purchasers of the game...

Oh my, you got killed in a game?
Here, have a tissue.

A-holes are everywhere. In real life, and in Elite: Dangerous.

Stay away from anarchy systems, and/or play private group or solo. Safer, but... Safer...;):)

Lupins are everywhere

First its a Beta, Player tests where the Borders are in the Gameplay-Mechanics. It's a part from Roleplaying, maybe you want to play like Bandit. But yes it can be also a Troll that want to grief Newbies - <lupins> are everywhere.

http://youtu.be/sen8Tn8CBA4

To get away from this, use the Solo Mode - you can switch everytime to Open Play. Its a option to get away from Griefers.

I think later will comes some newbie areas, with harder consequences for Grief Player, to better protect new players.
