So this is how new players are greeted?

If you see me out there, flag me down and i'll flick you some gold and get you started properly. Being shot inside of a station isn't part of the game.. that a cue the bag move.

Fly safe and keep your eye on your six ;)

Sorry to hear you got such a negative first impression Megablam. Unfortunately we currently have a number of pilots who are playing in the way you experienced because not all the rules and gamplay around PvP actions are in place.

Spawned in in my new Sidewinder, fresh from the factory and started adventuring. At my fourth hour of playing, some scumbag in a big ass spaceship, blew me to pieces inside a spacestation. And that pewed me off big time. I represented no threat and no target value for him - I was simply an easy kill...

Now - before everybody gets worked up on game mechanics etc - stop up and think: is this really how we should greet new players?

EVE Online suffers severely of the lack of fresh blood in the playerbase, due to exact this problem: old time players having a scavenger party on green rookies. If we are to make Elite the most awesome gaming experience for all parties, we must avoid slaying, what clearly is a rookie player.

The loudmouths will probaly claim, that a kill is a kill. I beg to differ...

Yes sorry it still happens to the new players but as the second post says there are a lot more friendly players willing to help all the new Cmdr's. A lot off them will be getting in harms way to make sure the new Cmdr's enjoy there time in Elite Dangerous.

Sorry, but sadly it happens. in all online games there is a small percentage of the members who are just idiots/immature/bored and kill newbies for a laugh. yes its annoying and frustrating

I hope you had enough cr left to pay the insurance, please bear in mind we aren't all idiots like that, most people are friendly and will only fire if you are wanted or attack them.

Welcome to Elite Dangerous. Babylon 5 -RANGERS- live and die for the one they live and die for each other, and always try and help in any way they can even if that means getting in harms way in a fight they know they may not be able to win. As long as the Cmdr's or group they are trying to help survive, they die with honour and will be remembered.

How do they know you are new? There is no way to tell how long a person has been playing the game. How were you clearly a rookie player?

Any game that allows pvp is this way. You have a free ship with free weapons, that is replaced for free instantly. How exactly was this a big deal?

Unlucky, Megablam! You might consider joining the PvE group where this kind of <thing> doesn't happen. Link in my sig.

You know I'm very much pro PvP and full on emergent sandbox sort of play, but I have to agree that I don't want to see newbies picked off by veteran players for fun.

At the moment we can't see what someones rank is, so there is no real way of determining who is a newbie and who is not. I'd prefer to see the consequences for veteran players nailing noobs be stronger than situations where two players are around the same kind of rank.

You sure it wasn't the station itself ?

there are a few minor infractions, like going a bit slow, or failing to get docking permission that result in the station (which is the very pinnacle of a big ass spaceship) killing you.

Its easy to forget, I've done it recently myself, survived mind, but only 'cos I was able to boost back out!

some scumbag in a big ass spaceship, blew me to pieces inside a spacestation.

It could also have been an accident.

However feel alleviated, that in future, someone in a station tries to spank you, they'll get a hull full of laser from the station and the fuzz!

Only the stations poor weapons are there at the moment.

I want to play PvE but the only way to do this is solo online. Shame there isn't a system where you challenge a player to a PvP rather than assume you want to play this way. As for NPCs you take pot luck with them.
I play MMO's not to show off that I can kill all but to make friends/socialise!

I am sorry that happened to you, it sucks that some people do this.

Truth is tho, despite my initial concerns I have found the online mode generally to be fairly ok. I have spotted numberous commanders milling around and yet have yet to be fired upon in standard beta.

I am not downplaying what happened to you at all, just saying stick with it, hopefully it was bad luck, and, on the bright side, if it was only your free sidewinder, at least it was nothing lost :)

PS in the interests of fair play, it is possible it could have been in error, and whilst on that note..

.....To the person who I rammed in freeport last night, around 8:30pm BST - I was in my shiny new cobra...

I am so sorry...... I was having ghost keypresses on my X55 after (hopfully) plugging the throttle into the wrong usb port. All I can say is, I am pretty sure it will have cost me a lot more than it cost you! (I was loaded with goods) :( My ship suddenly decided to fire up the afterburners whilst I was admiring your ship whilst i was coming into land.

Flying a sidewinder shifts the probability heavily towards 'new'.

Unfortunately the world is full of jerks. You see them in every pvp type game and just have to play with that in mind if you're in the open world.

Always have plenty of spare insurance cash. Make note of names and pass them on to your allies etc.

Join Mobius PvE group, I did, and it should stop things like this happening.

Can I just make a suggestion?

As the OP put this up as their first post and then went straight offline, can we wait and see if he is actually going to come back and make some response before we turn this into another massive thread that has been talked through many times before.

Sorry to hear that mate, say hi to me if you see me and I'll drop some candy.

I started in PB and the greifers were also there, I think that you should just learn that life is very hard and take the necessary steps to be safe.

For those who claim that it should not be possible to get shot inside a station i differ the opinion. It is a part of the game and should still be a part of the game. Life is hard and then you die.

Yet to be shot at by a pc anywhere, nvm killed in a station. Guess you were just unlucky ..or I've been lucky

I think it depends on where you wander. The players who are looking for a fight tend to hang out in the more populated systems.

I think the game should keep a player log of all human players who destroy an individual so the player can find them and have their revenge.

This scenario must be handled through a proper punishment system (even in EvE), not hand of God intervention

I think the game should keep a player log of all human players who destroy an individual so the player can find them and have their revenge.

EvE has "kill-rights" for exactly that. And if you can't exact revenge yourself (too new/fight averse), you can sell or give away the kill-rights to anyone. Then, when someone "activates" the kill-right on the "bad guy", everyone in system can legally shoot the bad guy.

The station should have responded. It won't stop him killing you in the first place but it should have blown him out of the sky for doing so inside the station.

Michael

When was that "fixed" ?
So far I've never seen stations do anything unless they were hit themselves. There even was a giant thread from a guy who pasted screenshots of him doing that after SB1's release, he was just gloating about it http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=30991 .

PS: I've also personally shot someone inside a station, he was just killing newbies without the station doing anything about it.
