So was multiplayer worth it...

No modding because of the multiplayer basically means this is a big NO for me.

I like the multiplayer concept but I've only come across 3 or 4 other players in my time playing (and I started just before beta ended).

So, I love the idea but I'm yet to see it in action.

And you won't unless you consciously decide to go to the handful of systems designated as player gathering spots. A game with 400 billion stars and the ability to play in a single player mode is really not designed with MP in mind, not if you ask me.

I mean was the necessity to have multiplayer in game worth all the limitations that it introduces?

Like,
Instances,
Speed limits,
Combat flight model,
Non seamless transition between SC, HS and combat space
Non possibility to travel in super cruise between systems
Loading Screens(hyper space)

ETC

Is the current multiplayer model worth it?

Yes! I have not participated much in PvP but I always play in open. Multiplayer brings with it a sense of jeopardy that, for me, makes the galaxy feel a little more alive.
I have been pirated several times, blown up twice, losing some valuable cargo. For me, these were some of the most exciting moments I have had so far. I agree it's a pain to loose credits but I can always hide myself away in some backwater until my cash looks more healthy :)
The idea of co-op play also really appeals and with the Wings update i'm looking forward to seeing how this game develops.

Like,
Instances, Most things are instanced in one way or another since it allows easier optimizing, however how much the player sees of that instancing is another matter.
Speed limits, what do you mean speed limits? you want to go faster then hundred times the speed of light?
Combat flight model, What is wrong with the flight model? I find it very good.
Non seamless transition between SC, HS and combat space - This is something that can be tweaked with time
Non possibility to travel in super cruise between systems - Again this can be tweaked over time.
Loading Screens(hyper space) - Again this can be tweaked and masked.

ETC

Course this is just my thoughts on it, and things can be masked fairly well as done with other games, and making the various things more seamless and such is probably in the works, though most likely not top priority yet.

I still fail to see where this game wants to go with its multiplayer.

If you exclude PvP, there is no meaningful mp content in the game. I'm not even sure there can be given the prevalent notion of what constitutes the elite experience. There are no dungeons, no rare gear drops, nothing in the environment that would ever require grouping. Without tangible rewards or purpose, there are no PUGs; without corps and alliances there is very limited socialization outside pre-existing groups of friends--which rarely are large enough to withstand churn for extended periods of time. I don't think an arbitrary set of slightly better paying missions or some such is going to cut it.

Even inherently social features like walking in stations are unlikely to solve the lack of social interaction without establishing proper hubs first. (And I'm still not sure the space faring crowd is the proper audience for doll games. One unmitigated Incarna says no.) The huge galaxy simply dilutes the playerbase beyond passing acquaintance and there is no reason whatsoever to trust the other guy.

PvP on the other hand is just plain gimped. The underlying architecture (which won't change) prevents any sort of meaningful fleet combat. Even area denial is pretty much out and thus player driven conflicts. Without either, pvp is just a quick action fix. Something mmobas (hello fractured space) are generally much better at--they minimize waiting times, suppress cheating and usually offer progression and a variety of valid playing styles. ED ... offers pew pew. Sure: it's fun for a while, but how many people are going to stick with it once the novelty wears off?

So, no. Unless Frontier have a long-term plan to adress these issues and are prepared to exclude solo players from significant rewards (with predictable outrage), I personally think multiplayer is a nice cash grab, but otherwise a complete waste of time and resources. There is however an awesome single player game trying to break free.
