update - I managed to work out how to place elevated paths, you have to hold SHIFT while placing an un-connected section to set some of it in the air. Deeply unintuitive, just like most of this game so far A fairly simple platform over my plains habitat is working well so far.

You can also click and drag on the path you're building. This is described in the help text.

Actually the problem may be that null barrier just doesn't work In the image below this female lion basically just walked right through it. I guess I need to build up rock to block them.

Why should a lion stay in an enclosure just because you drew a line? Build a barrier or a terrain block - the tooltip for the null barrier specifically mentions terrain and water barriers.
