So what exactly IS being added in 2.4 beta? Anything?

I think they only care about their 'exciting' new, optional, alien stuff at the moment.

They decided to add this before fixing the stuff they've already thrown, scattershot, at the 'game'.

Adding aliens to shoot is just continuing to pander to the pew pew based people. I do like it but I'm sick and tired of exploration getting the shaft 2 years now.. It looks like there may be actually some scientific research involved which is interesting but if I know FD - they'll make it very grindy and repetitive and not involve anything UI based. It'll be something that can be a single button win like the gong. It won't involve a mouse because it needs to pander to VR people. It will also NOT be rewarding as a profession. That is the modus operandi.

The thing that amuses me the most is that FD constantly bang on about ED being an open sandbox where we decide what to do and how to play.

But with every patch and new update they add more combat related stuff in, it's always primarily combat related.

It's like "Hey Mr sheep, you can go anywhere you like in this field, but the food and water are in this corner only. Sure you might find scraps here and there, but if your really hungry you'll have to go into this corner..."

FD can keep herding it's sheep in the combat direction, I'll come back when they do this "core update" they promised, and see if the sheep have been freed from the herd.

Blaze your own trail our way! That has been the bare bones complaint I've had since day 1. You made a huge galaxy and filled it with nothing to find. No tools to use to find anything. Wasted time on a bunch of junk like powerplay instead of focusing on exploring the 400Billion stars they've provided. There is zero danger out exploring other than bumping into a star. No danger at all, nothing to encounter. Doesn't sound very exciting does it?

Same here. I've not touched Elite for over 3 weeks now (even then I had a previous 2 weeks without playing it) and I find it all quite sad and a shame.
There's nothing making me want to go back to it and spend more hours in the same old grind time and time and time again.
Core gameplay is very much needed urgently.
Thargoid stuff will be ok but how long before the novelty wears off ?
We need stuff in the game that keeps us coming back.
I'm sick of buying ships and then going through the dire engineering grind, and then what ? Fly around for combat or taking on low rewarding missions ? Nothing exciting for traders or explorers either. Just combat oriented updates time and time again.

I've not played in over three weeks now either. Exploring has gone backwards too far in S2 for me to maintain interest, and the lack of development has finally worn me down. I'm a bit less pessimistic than Verminstar though, in that I do believe Frontier would like to make the non-combat stuff better. Passengers was a non-combat feature and it's pretty sweet. I just feel like, from Frontier's actions, that non-combat content has not been a high priority for them, and I don't expect 2.4 to be any different. I do hope that the direction changes after 2.4, and from the tiny tidbits Frontier have spoken about S3 so far it sounds like the non-combat content might finally be getting some priority. Until that happens though I'm taking a break from Elite. The Dead End Expedition is slated to launch after 2.4 releases, but man honestly the thought of circumnavigating the galaxy right now in the sad state that exploration is in just makes me cringe with sourness. I'm not sure I can do it with all the bland beige that is out there, and without the eye candy exploration really doesn't have much else to offer currently.

But I'm glad the Thargoids are coming to give the combat players something new to play with!

I'd say a slim chance that we get a few ships, although I am keeping my fingers crossed that we can fly some soft of modified thargoid SLF at some point.
I'm betting the Panther Clipper makes an appearance. Would make sense to get that in the game at this time. Would be nice to have some smaller ships too (Krait, Boa, Mamba), more SRV choices and as 777 said, additional station assets.

While people are not expecting much beyond the Tharg addition, I'll bet the change log will be quite long indeed. Those back room Oompa Loompas at Frontier do remarkable things in a short period of time.

When players realise "we're scrapping seasons to make improvements to the core gameplay" means "we're going to develop almost nothing" ;)

The core gameplay focus is supposed to come AFTER 2.4. 2.4 is the last patch of the horrible experiment that was the season model.

Season 2 as been great for combat players so far and that trend will probably continue with 2.4, the rest of us have to wait until next year in all likelihood and just hope the non-combat players get some much needed attention.

I've only been playing the game since Christmas, but I'm already finding myself leaning towards verminstar's point of view. I can see a lot of potential in this game, but I suspect that much of that potential will be left unfulfilled.

I see two different camps involved with this game: Those that want a more intelligent game, offering many different aspects of gameplay, and those that just want to pew-pew. The former would take much more effort than it would to throw together a arcade style shoot-em-up and offer occasional 'features' to it. Maybe the later has been the focus all along, and the other tidbits thrown out in an effort to entice a different group of players to engage, was just a half-baked effort to garner a bit more money from a wider audience? I honestly don't know.

But I already tire of the little innuendos being thrown around just to keep the player base 'hanging on'. Without specifics, I am rapidly approaching verminstar's position in that, I simply don't trust them to ever deliver any real core improvements. I will hang on until 2.4 to see what is added to the game. If it looks like FD is only interested in promoting pew-pew, then I will move on to something else.

Exatly - which is why I'm asking what ACTUALLY is coming in 2.4. By the looks of it not much. Then they'll drip the faucet by doing community goals and manually being dungeon masters.

Why don't we wait for the beta next week before we go all doom and gloom. We know the new bounty system is in 2.4 and they might add improvements to exploration.

being dungeon masters.

that lil red devil was as cryptic as some FD stream answers.

I think people are asking for too much. Combat is focused because it's more bang for your buck. If you don't at least tolerate combat than why are you playing Elite. Why not play Eurotrucker or do some real stargazing. Yeah sure you can add a player run economy but only people who like spreadsheats are going to be happy. Playing mini games for exploration. NOOOooo! I rather honk. 800+ hours and I still have stuff to do. Go to Colonia/Sag A/Beagle point. Reach Tripple Elite. Whatever they have in 2.4. Honestly it's not bad. Be thankful you are not into Star Citizen. They literrally have nothing and may not have anything for years.

Im hoping to see actual fixes in next weeks list...when asked about the fix fer beigification, Brett told us it was in the hands of QA after a whole 11 months of waiting fer it. So by the time it should be making an appearance in the upcoming beta, it will be about 14 months since it was first reported.

Ye those little oompa loompas certainly appear to work fast, dont they?

We are waiting, not with much enthusiasm, but we are waiting because we dont have any choice...we never did. Sure we can go play other games while we wait, but we still have to wait nonetheless. Whats on that list will be what decides if I personally feel bothered to stick around at all...right now, its not looking good ^

I get your point, even if it is somewhat simplistic in it's assumptions of what I like/do/want in this game. Look at my sig. I do 'tolerate' combat, have been to Colonia (and other places as well), and am a fair hand at trade, but have NO interest in any MMO mechanics like a player run economy. :)

Given that 2.3 just seemed like "filler" to me, so they could start something new next year, I'm not really expecting much from 2.4.

Maybe they'll get the stuff they introduced for2.3 working properly.
And, maybe, Panther Clipper?

Thus rendering my Cutter redundant.

Going out on a limb here - I'm willing to bet no new ships. They'd have hinted about it by now. They always hint at what they do have. So far its all going to be thargoids. Their art department has been doing nothing but modeling the enemy.

Some recent surveys indicate that exploration is one of the most popular activities in ED (the most recent one on Reddit for example).
It puzzles me why combat activities continue to receive so much attention.
As an explorer, the only single thing that has been announced and that is worthwhile to me is the hull repair feature.
The entire Thargoid story is utterly meaningless to me as it will occur tens of thousands of light years away from where I am and not affect me in the slightest.
There is a chance that Frontier may force random Thargoid interdictions on anyone anywhere. If this happens I will Alt-TAB and taskkill /f /im elitedangerous64.exe /t immediately and not load the game again until Frontier come to their senses.

TLDR; Frontier, I want nothing to do with your Thargoids. If you foist them upon me, I shall quit playing, make pouty faces and post disparaging messages about the Thargoids on the forum.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.

Best be careful out on that limb.... it might just break.

And really - the art department has been doing 'nothing' but Thargoid content? Source on that?

Not just recent surveys. Polls and surveys for over two years have consistently shown exploration is extremely desired among the players. I agree, you'd think Frontier would put a higher priority on developing for it, seems like a hugely wasted opportunity to really give Elite a unique aspect that no other game can offer: exploring the Milky Way.
