So what happened to this orrery ?

I’ve so forgotten the one we have even exists. Never used it outside the beta. Only used it in the beta to verify that it worked. I see no use for it.

The problem with Orreries is that they are either mostly cosmetic like the original mechanical one made for the Earl of Orrery and not to scale like an animated version of the system map or they are accurate like the one we now have but awkward to use because the true scale makes zooming essential to see details.

But our Orrery is software so can have advanced features such as switching scale from normal to logarithmic etc. Our scanner scale can be switched as well, for example. Sure, it may not work (well) in all cases but User Beware.

... Could it be shinier, more functional? Yes, of course. Is that needed? No.

Taking a step back, these sort of outlooks are a bit disheartening. Some may remember when the game was shiny and new and the possibilities of what would eventually be implemented seemed nearly limitless, even just going by the early dev. videos and the like.

Hoping Frontier can reinvigorate things and kick it up a notch beyond settling for making ends meet. They did quite well with the galactic sim and world surface generation pretty early on, so there is some hope yet.

Cheers.
