Newcomer / Intro So, what was your first BIG ship?

Pick one of the less influential factions in a system (one that you're allied with) and keep running missions for them. Their influence will increase until it matches with another faction's.

Then... Interesting Things Happen.*

*Works most visibly in low population systems. Your mileage may vary. Things you don't know about will make the system behave in ways you don't anticipate. Stress balls or bubble wrap recommended accessories for those "WHY!?" moments. :)

Elite causes me enough stress already.

"Oh you need to go to that station that is 275,000 LS from your drop point"
"Oh you got interdicted? Lets throw in another Elite NPC for you"
"Oh you have a new ship with barely enough space bucks to cover insurance, lets make sure that cargo run has 3, not 2 or 1 NPC's that want you on the way"
"Oh you want to MOVE that ship to your location. Nah, lets make it easy to accidentally sell the whole thing!"
"Oh you need to do a Fed Navy mission to gain grade? Lets make sure you cannot do it on your current ships, and when you do get a ship that can do it, make sure that mission is gone"
"

The first "big ship" I bought was a T7 but I don't really count that.

I bought a T6 especially for a CG, ended-up in the top 10% of that and got a payout of around Cr16m and then another CG started and I just traded the T6 and my payout for a T7 and then jumped straight into another CG and did the same thing again.

The first "big ship" that I deliberately chose to buy was a Python.
Lots of cargo space, reasonably tanky and can fit on a medium pad so there's nothing to hinder your ability to trade with one.

S'funny, I have recently been sorting all my ships into groups and taking them around various engineers.
I hadn't flown the Python in about a month and, while taking it to an engineer, I realised that I'd actually spent quite a bit of money on it and turned it into a bloody good ship.

15+M credits... still medium ship territory...
For me first such ship was clipper, then T9, and no, i was not earning those ships by trade, clipper was outfitted for combat and T9 i wanted for CG-s...
Later i bought python and FDL, then, immediately after 2.0 release - corvette and cutter.
Later, after Jaques station discovery 20+kly from the bubble - anaconda.

My big ship progression went as such; Python, FDL, Sell FDL, Anaconda. I'm looking to get the rank for the corvette but that may not be happening anytime soon...

The first (and only) large ship I've ever flown is the T7.

The Python is indisputably the most flexible ship for BGS-oriented players. I've owned one, and am working back to one after an account reset.

The FdL is, in my opinion, a far superior combat ship to the Python for its six utility mounts. The depth of shielding this can give you is unmatched in a ship of its size. Despite the... interesting hardpoint layout (which Viper pilots will be well used to,) the power plant and the medium hardpoints give you amazing flexibility. A friend of mine runs an all plasma loadout.

Monkey by name, monkey by nature lmao...having just read your other thread on stirring up political tension in your system ...made me smile...having just spend best part of 200m space bucks on my python which I'm loving, but me being a ship hoarder have decided that I want to keep it more mission rated than combat rated, I think I'm happy enough with the jump range at 34ly with my current load out....but I have been looking again at the FDL , and watching YouTube videos of them in action, I'm about half way there CR wise...but really concerned about their nimbleness in combat? It's taken a good few hours in hi res to get used to the python, she needs a lot more pip control, boosts and FA off to get her butt moving...so in your opinion, what's the FDL like to handle and have you done any videos ?

Everything's crazy agile when you compare it to Python. :)

I'm gonna make a little but unfair comparison, here, but let's consider Clipper, FAS and FdL to be direct adversaries. FdL is the LEAST agile of the three, but fairly fast and with biggest firepower and best shields, FAS is the slowest, has mediocre shields and weaponry, but is most agile and Clipper has weakest shields, mediocre firepower and agility, but is fastest of the three.

Form over function though. ;)

The trick to the FdL (apart from the super boring but super effective 4-0-2 pip combination with those gigajoule shields) is pip management. It's a little sluggish in standard flight, even with 4 pips to ENG, but there is a remarkable difference in its performance between 0 and 4 pips. Its boost performance is remarkable. You can really throw it around when boosting. Once you've got your head around its characteristics and handling, it really is the king of fighters. It makes PvE combat, dare I say it, a bit boring.

And I don't really do videos. I've made a couple, but certainly none that I would publicise; just a couple of videos to show friends what I was talking about in certain situations (i.e. FA-off and FA-on rotational correction.)

Nope, picked up a Gunship recently 'cos I wanted a SLF boat. Flies like a brick outhouse, even an awesome DD5 roll doesn't improve the experience.

I would disagree. I find Gunship much easier to fight in. Cumbersome, challenging, yes, but still enjoyable. Unlike Python, which is just frustrating.
I use Gunship in RES from time to time, when I get bored by just camping it in a Cutter and it's fun. Regardless of what the stats say.

I saved like mad for an Imperial Clipper. Beautiful ship, beautiful cockpit and just Imperialy classy.

But that Imp grind.

Plus... you know... Imps...

I managed to do a lot of the grind today due to the massive storm up here... so now I have a choice, Python or FdL. I'm a combat trader. It seems both boats are decent at that... Not sure which way to go.

If you want to trade more than just shots, I'm afraid you'll have to make do with Python. FdL has NO internal space.

Clipper was my first big ship. I got both it and the courier back when rep lock was temporarily lifted. It's been through many refits and roles and remains integral to my fleet to this day. For now it's a mining ship.
