So when are the console servers closing?

For those naysayers out there, I should point out the following:

"we have felt it necessary to make this difficult decision in order to allow us to bring in content and features in the way that we felt was best for the overall Elite Dangerous experience."

FDev post. 6 months ago. This is looking familiar.

"We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase."

These were the alarm bells going off in my head as I read through the announcement. The fact that Braben said the game will continue to be patched on consoles but did not specifically mention servers for consoles makes me worry he was being intentionally disingenuous. Obviously, Braben himself in addition to Frontier as a whole have a record of such behavior, as stated there are likely still a slew of older Macs around that have earlier builds of ED installed, no longer playable at all. Though I think we'll see Horizons continue to be supported on consoles for at least another 6-12 months, the writing is most certainly on the wall. In my opinion ED is very much in need of an offline mode, and though I hope beyond words such a thing is retroactively added to consoles in the future, I sorely doubt such a thing will ever happen on PC let alone consoles. Really my best hope for the game as a whole is that Frontier gives the source code the community when the official servers inevitably go offline for everyone. Until then I'll savor each and every moment I have left in Horizons, maybe Elite Dangerous really is just too good to last indefinitely...

Yeah just like how Odyssey was still coming to consoles right? You trust these lazy backstabbers to not just shut down the console versions?
I do not know. I do not own a gaming studio. What I do suspect is that Sony and Microsoft have something to say about this too. Even IF Fdev wanted to kill EDH for consoles asap.

Please mind your words. I get you are emotional but 'Lazy backstabbers'?
They are a company. They need to make money or there is no game at all and mon and dad loose their job and the kids will go hungry ;-)

Nah, I call it as I see it.

They can't be bothered to set up profile transfers ahead of time? Lazy.

They discontinue all support after promising full parity?

Backstabbing.

K thanks bye. Great discussion.

The 'promised' mantra is sooo bad

Companies do not promise anything ever.. Only facebook did. And we know how that turned out 👨‍🏫

This is exactly the bull I'm expecting for consoles soon. Although the BGS is shared between platforms and it works just fine as it is, I really don't know why consoles couldn't keep going indefinitely. From a networking standpoint I see no obstacle, since it's currently fine as well. This is the kind of communication I would expect from Frontier but they will not give us anything. They never say anything clearly.

The servers will be shut off as soon as they can possibly do it- that's the entire point!!!

They're trying to cut costs after the dumpster fire that is Odyssey- server overhead is a big part of that.

This isn't complicated, people!

First rule of business is to plan an exit strategy. With the dumpster fire that is EDO, I wouldn't be surprised if we've reached that point on all platforms.

Come on, Microsoft... FDev acts like a company desperately wanting to be bought out...

Edit: Maybe we should start a petition for that lol... How many FDev games are currently on Game Pass already?

It will probably be sooner, rather than later (before Q1 2023). Arx sales will bottom out in a week or so, everyone will catch up with the new Braben announcement in a month, and the servers will go down because cost will outweigh revenues.

It's going to be easy to predict Frontiers behaviour over the remaining quarters of 2022.

...and if you think Braben will allow ED to run on independent servers, like he suggested he would, you're just wrong. It'll never happen.

The only question is, should I by LON FDEV at the bottom (assuming It'll be acquired)?

It's still keeping going and TBH if you get your FPS kicks in other games like I do already and you play Elite to fly spaceships, this is probably as good as it'll get anyway.
This ^ ^ ^

Odyssey is an utter failure... just look at any recent review. Why would anyone even want this on their console?

I would assume this fall, or early next year. Frontier makes their decisions according to balance sheets and statistics, so I think they'll wait until active player numbers dwindle more on consoles so the outrage will not be as great. It's simply delusional to think that a service-based game that's not updated anymore, and uses a separate codebase to the "active one", will be running indefinitely. As they did with the Mac client, they will shut down consoles soon.
The Mac client was only shut out at the end of 2018, about 3 years after it was cancelled for release on MacOS.

Particularly Microsoft, since ED has been on GamePass with Microsoft's own backwards-compatibility enhancements.

On the other hand... can anyone recommend a decent console-sized PC? Asking for a friend...

This is going to go down well with players picking it up thinking it's a bargain...
