Have HP Omen x17 (only USB3) with GTX1080 and Vive Pro. No prior experience with Elite Dangerous, but it looks absolutely great so would like to buy a Saitek X52 to make it all work. Besides that it is apparenly a hassle to program the X52 buttons (but I think I can survive that [where is it]), I see all kinds of nasty stories about the X52 having problems with USB3. But if I use a powered USB3 hub to plug the X52 in, then it should all be OK?
So will this set-up work?

I'm using the Thrustmaster T1600M FCS Throttle ans Stick combo through my front USB 3 ports with no problems at all for over a year now. I'm using a Lenovo Explorer HMD for VR.
The FCS Stick uses Hall Sensors, so it is probably the most precise at its price point and the Throttle slides like the one's in the ED cockpits your hand movement translates to what you see in VR. It also has a socket in the Throttle base to plug in a Foot Rudder System and bothe the stick and throttle have screw mountins for secure fixing.
I have no experience with the X52. I know there were many problems when Saitek (or MadCatz) were producing them, so unless Logitech have upped the ante, it may be worth considering the Thrustmaster.

The Logitech X-56 grey (not the blue version) has resolved a lot of the previous Saitek X-55 problems. After 100 hours I haven't found a fault with it especially with centering to zero releasing the joystick which was a really big deal with the previous versions. Maybe they got this one right. Meanwhile it is the perfect controller to program every feature in Elite Dangerous. The designers totally nailed this. Let's hope with a few more hundred hours it will hold up on the mechanical side. Still I would buy an extended warranty just in case. Note the Thrustmaster T.16000m is a solid reliable controller and can provide all a player needs at a lower cost. Also use a powered USB hub for the X-56. They are cheap and computer motherboards often split the amperage per all the toys you connected. Not good.

It does look rather nice. I hope Logitech have sorted the problems out as the designs from an exterior and aesthetic point of view are good.
Thanks for the advice! The Thrustmaster T1600m FCS looks good and I understand is for sure USB 3 compatible. The new X56 looks very much derived from the X52 and is perhaps the best you can get now from Logitech, but does it work with USB 3? The reason I wanted the X52 was I read somewhere it very well mirrors the throttle & stick in-game, but I guess so does the X56. Just want the right stuff without having to spend days fiddling and reading technical forums how to make it (not) work, it should be more or less plug & play for me! I think I can deal with setting it up, button allocation etc, but if there is a risk that its not USB3 compatible, even with a powered hub, then I won't go there.
So thanks again. If the new X56 can cope with USB3 (why wouldn't Logitech address that??) then that may be my choice. Until I'm going to doubt again! It is not cheap!

The T16000m FCS stick has a cheap twist axis. The majority of users I've talked to have reported theirs failing anywhere from 6 months to a year, and mine failed after about a year of casual use. The throttle that comes bundled with it is pretty nice, though, so I kept it and got a VKB Gladiator stick. My advice is to stay away from the T16000m FCS unless you're planning on using pedals for yaw in the very near future.
I am using the older version of the x56 and I have had no issues. I am sure I have over 600 hours on it. I play every day and have had it over a year.
I have it plugged into a cheap Amazon Basics branded powered USB3.0 hub which is tied to a USB3 port on my motherboard. My particular hub has two fast charge ports on it (higher current draw) and that is what I keep it plugged into.
I had an x55 lasted about 9months, saitek replaced it, but in the meantime I purchased an X52 pro and been using it ever since (20 months) without any issues whatsoever.
Thanks that raises my hopes. Already expected I would need a powered hub in-between, given the high currents that the X HOTAS series seem to draw, just wasn't sure if that needed to be USB2 or if the HOTAS can cope with USB3. Not sure what would happen if I plug an USB2 hub in the one of the USB3 ports of my laptop. But good to know I probably don't need to worry when keeping it all USB3. I might actually stop dithering and go for it now!
Hi Rob, is that with USB2 or USB3?
All USB3 ports are backwards compatible, so if it's a USB2 device, it'll work in a USB3 port (at USB2 speeds and power output of course).
Early in the game design circa 2015 the Saitek X-52 was actually promoted by Frontier including a discount to purchase it. My opinion is when they added the styling of the Empire ships the X-52 perfectly matched them for those players totally into immersion, controller design, ergonomics and really picky about it. But the game moves on thus several other great HOTAS to select from per personal preferences. The game moves on...

You don't need to program the X52, just bind the buttons in ED. Also, get a copy of VoiceAttack

And @Hooplah, you are right of course, but I would like to have that max immersion if possible; have the sticks on ED ships now moved away from the X52 look? @BigDuke6ixx, thanks for the advice, I will certainly follow it up (once I'm a proud HOTAS owner).
Remains one question: is there anybody who has made the X52 pro work in ED using PC/laptop USB3 ports and Windows 10? And assuming a powered hub is then used, is that a USB2 or USB3 powered hub?
