So say you've hit a bug that totally prevents you from logging into the game using your character for over a week. Is there any recommended way to play the game again short of deleting your character and restarting from scratch?

Yeah, as @metatheurgist says, contact support, don't just fill in the bug report site. Raise a support ticket (not a bug report one) at https://support.frontier.co.uk/ - they are really helpful.

If on the rare occasion they get swamped and take to long and you use twitter... you can send there twitter support the ticket number after a few days to remind them your still waiting...
