Newcomer / Intro Sol permit for a pacifist?

Is that possible? Going up with the ranks high enough to get the Sol permit without combat-related missions?

Tried to find the answer on the forum but failed.

Great, thanks for info. So I can assume that these rank-up missions to be done after reaching 100% of current rank can also be a non-violence ones. :) Perfect. :)

Sometimes you see combat ones. Just pass on those and look around in the board or at other stations. I've gotten data courier missions and cargo missions ("naval supply runs") for rank-up missions. Also, once you hit 100% it doesn't freeze, it keeps counting xp in the background. That's why even if it takes a while to find an ideal mission, you're not really lagging behind. I've had a time where it took a while to find a mission, and once I did it I was 56% of the way through the next rank already. A friend of mine wound up doing three rank-up missions in rapid succession because for a while there was a bug that only gave combat missions, which got fixed. Then she did three data courier rank-up missions in a row, and was very happy. ^.^

After a few months of playing I've become convinced it's quite possible to play this game for years without ever killing someone, maybe even entirely unarmed, and still live and prosper.

If so that's certainly a credit to the game design, considering that for those who so desire challenging combat is also easily available.

3 is enough for the permit then ?

I may want to go take a look there as well.

Just how accurate is the representation of the Galaxy in this game ?

No, she did three rankup missions that were each data missions. All the other missions she had been doing had been accumulating xp for progression hidden by the "100%" counter in the HUD. It doesn't tell you how much it's got banked, but bank it for you it does, as opposed to just being frozen at 100%.

Eh, could it be mine is still "frozen" ?

It's been full since as long as I can remember, but I never felt the need to join the feds, until I discovered it's a requirement to visit Sol.

I did 1 (entirely peaceful :)) mission to become a recruit, it's still full so I imagine the next mission will grant me the next level then ?

Hope so. Three months so far, zero bullets shot ingame. :D

I did some deliberate killing when I first started since I wanted to practice combat skills, but my ship turns out to better suited for evasion then it is for a slugging fest and rewards are moderate unless you go and shoot it out in those specific "killing zones".

I suspect bigger, better armed ships will lead to a more aggressive playing style eventually ?

Exactly. And you're not really "joining" the Federation with this. These aren't real ranks, else you'd be at their beck and call. It's strictly a rank equivalence that they use as a gauge for how much they trust you, evidenced by system permits and privilege to buy certain ships.

Dunno, I have a Cutter and I still prefer to be peaceful. [big grin]

Bigger ships do not need to be heavily armed, the faster ones can easily escape almost any attack so have no need for weapons if equipped correctly with shields etc.

Nah... I used several ships, all of them weaponless. Current one is even shieldless. In my case it's a state of mind. I want to explore, then explore, then explore again. And then, if there is a good reason, I can do some courier missions, passengers, may also take on some smuggling as it's a bit more fun than legal deliveries. I did non-exploring activities twice so far - less than two weeks at the very beginning of the game, to gather money for exploration Dolphin and two weeks after my first trip, to engineer my brand new AspX. I can do it third time - to get to humanity's home system and to catch the Voyager.

Elite has a disturbing underlying theme that you get criminalised for the slightest error.
So it's either fight or flight.

For example if you take your time leaving a spaceport you get told you face a lethal response.
A lethal response for being a bit slow leaving the car park!!!!

Watch out for that squadron of Apache attack helicopters next time you're a bit tardy leaving Tesco's.

Make a mess of landing and your ship will be destroyed.
I mean everybody knows that airports have batteries of anti-aircraft missiles in case a learner pilot makes a bumpy landing.

Get a 400 cr fine for next to nothing and squadrons of powerful ships flown by experts will track you down.
So next time you put out your rubbish before the approved time expect your front garden to be pulverised with a tactical nuclear strike by the local council.

etc.

I understand the need for gameplay - but when it deviates from common sense to this extent it's just ridiculous.

Small fines and bounties should be just fines - that you can pay without having to avoid warships trying to destroy you.
The psychopaths that run space ports need to be replaced with helpful people who understand air traffic control.
And any pirate that attacks you by announcing himself with lines from a 1950's B-movie should have his ship taken away and replaced with a Ford Anglia.

I also understand that Elite is improving in many ways.
But the primary emphasis always seems to be on bigger and better warships and more things to attack.

You only have to look at the mission board to see which way the game has progressed. Destroy this, kill that, help the war effort by.., civil war recovery of .., assassinate..., scan the enemy beacon. etc etc.

And the System Authority ships that tell you 'we haven't found anything on you this time' - assuming you're a criminal with no evidence.

I think Frontier seriously underestimates the number of people who just like to pootle around the universe buying and selling a few things and looking at the sights and the scenery.

The problem is, I suppose, that they aren't the Elite power-players who aggressively demand bigger, better and more destructive things to do.
So they get ignored.

Well to be fair, implementing interesting, non violent gameplay into computer games has always been a challenge.

The fact that a pacifist career still allows you to progress in the game is already an accomplishment imho, few games have it as an option.

Vicious and challenging fights still draw the bigger crowd I think.

The Sol permit comes with being promoted to Petty Officer - that is rank number 4 so not hard to get.

It takes more than three missions to get to 100% and qualify for a "naval promotion mission" but starting from scratch you need to do 4 promotion missions. This might seem to need a lot of missions overall but really it doesn't.

Bear in mind that Sol doesn't look like today - Mars has been terraformed and Earth's sea levels have changed. Most of the moons don't look a bit like they do in reality, some are not even in the game.

What about from your srv? I recently got a new account and that was the goal... but then srv gameplay counts for your combat rank so :/

Are you sure? Only destroying skimmers and turrets for bounties count for that. You don't need to murder machines to use your SRV - materials gathering might fire bullets but the only stats involved are in exploration (materials and distance in SRV).
