Modes Solo vs Open...

It is not. Just be careful around cg's, the starter systems, Shinrarta Desra and systems with engineers. Outside those, open is fine. (Inside those it is often fine as well, but the chances of someone picking a fight there are a lot greater)
Most importantly: learn how to get away quickly when you're not in a pvp-capable ship.

I have just played solo but would like to play open.

Reading the forums it seems like a gank fest.

What is your opinion?

You'll be fine if you stay away from hot spots. You know - engineers, faction capitals, low sec sectors with tourist beacons where a handful of geniuses encourage thousands of lightly outfitted ships to show up en masse, things like that.

Once you gain some experience, and if you pay attention to people who actually know how to play the game, you can survive nearly anything, anywhere.

Start with this video, watch your sensors and make a note of what other CMDRs are doing in your instance, and you'll be fine.

Open is a lot of fun, best of luck.

And if you wind up having questions about outifitting, engineering your ships, or basic flying and survival, the best place to ask is in the PvP sub.... 800 CMDRs and counting can't be wrong.

I think it depends on your platform mostly. I play in open on PS4 and barely ever see anyone. Most that i do see avoid contact at all costs though i have had a few cmndrs stop and chat. I played solo when i started but i really prefer the open world.

Don't listen to Backelaer. It is a gankfest, but only if you're looking for it. I fly in open all the time and the only time I ever get ganked is if I'm in places where the gankers frequent, timezones also matter as I actually go to CG's a lot and not a single ganker in sight for hours and hours. But once you start seeing them, I recommend never coming back to that system for a good few hours so you can rob them of their content.

Remember, only you can prevent ganks by not becoming content to begin with

It is not but if you can't deal with being destroyed every once in a while for your own failures, stay in solo. Else, open is for you too.

I think a little common sense goes a long way in open. First be aware of what you are flying, most random gankers won't bother you in a nicely outfitted combat ship. Also be aware of the neighborhood your in. As others have pointed out, engineers, CG's...etc can be gankfests. Honestly on most nights I have to really look for someone else to fight for PP... with the instancing its not much different than solo :)

Yes, the forums are indeed a gank-fest.

Damn, Kari just spoke the troof!

The forums are far more toxic than Open play.

I'm telling you OP, get out there and give it a go. And this is coming from a guy who's chasing explorers half-way across the galaxy so I can 'splode them.

most of the time it isnt. why not suck it and see, if you are worried find a nice area you like in solo and then go into open in a cheap ship you can afford to lose. you can do anything you want to in a cobra - an adder even can do most things.

Basically just stay away from anything interesting that might attract other players and you will be fine. A nice in between choice is join a private group, this way you learn the game, git gud, but still have human interaction within the game. Think of it as your local swimming pool before you go cage swimming with great whites

Situational awareness helps. I was out bug-hunting just before 3.3, left the station in open, jumped into SC, saw a FAS heading towards me. I managed to get a partial scan, enough to see they were running shieldless, before they passed me and immediately started circling around. I didn't wait to see if they were heading for the station I just left, I killed my throttle and dropped then and there. Waited a bit, pointed in another direction, jumped back into SC - there they were, directly behind me, facing away. I targeted them, they started flipping over, so I dropped again and high-waked.

If you drop out of supercruise before they can get an interdiction tether on you, they're pretty much not going to find you.

Open is cool. Ironically I avoided hotspots in Open because there was never a free parking space, LOL.

Encountering a CMDR in the more fringe areas of the Bubble (or better still, outside the Bubble) is pretty amazing. I was shocked at all the CMDRs I was seeing when I was "stationed" out in the Lagoon Nebula, all making their way to or from Colonia.

Lie. I lost a corvette to gankers on the sole purpose of me being in a combat ship. The same went for the first and only FDL I ever had.

Some go for weak and easy targets, others want to take down that giant to stroke their e-peens and say "I took on that monster and won"

I play Open during betas to get the full ganker experience. I can avoid them just fine, but why deal with the aggravation when I'm just playing a game for my own amusement?

Open's fine as long as you don't fly around with a blindfold on. Keep an eye on what is going on around you. Put a c-rated or higher shield in at least your 2nd biggest slot. Switch to Solo Mode or PG if you want to participate in CGs or large events, at least until you get comfortable with what you're doing.

It can be, depends on where you go and what you do.

It is possible to play for months and never see another player. It’s possible to be blown up every time to try to leave a station.

My only real problem with open is that other peoples’ can-and-string net makes my experience suck when I have to see them rubber band around, or worse, when their garbage connection makes me do it. So I just don’t. Plenty of other people in PG’s, none with any shortcomings to compensate for.
