Solo - Why the need to be online

Firstly, THANK YOU! I've missed this game and have been hoping it would be redone. It's almost like i was 15 again and just getting into playing games!

secondly, i searched and didn't see anything that seemed to cover my quandary.

solo - why the need to be online? I don't intend to play online. I would prefer to play solo and avoid the village idiots. I've noticed most of my "lock ups" seem to be related to my poor connection and/or dns issues that I can't connect to the Elite servers.

When I try to play "online" is red and I can't do anything else. I'll be in the stardocks trying to trade and the trade times out. other times "time out", like when i'm "jumping" or coming out of "jump".

Would there be anyway to change it so that solo only requires talking to the servers every X weeks or some such. I travel often and don't always have internet connections.

LOL - I must have been typing my message the exact same time you were - I also just posed similar questions at the forum so you might watch that thread too when it is posted up shortly :D

The solo mode needs to connect to the meta servers in order to download market updates and other universe data. Even though you're not meeting other players you're still playing in the same online universe as everyone else.

That's why it's called Online Solo.

There is going to be a true, separate offline mode that is not connected to the meta servers but that's not implemented yet.

I'll just say what has already been said in a different way.

There isn't an offline mode yet because this is a test. FD want to know everything that people are doing in the game to help improve everyone's experience. That means you have to be online to send them data.

Thank you, Captain N and Zvanya.

I redid my search and discovered a post 3-4 pages in that explained the same. I'll continue on playing and enjoying a blast from the past redone.

i'm all for being a guinea pig. I knew that signing up. I was just curious if there were plans in the future for a true offline. I've learned thusly, there will be from other replies.

Note, i didn't complain about the lockups. Just that it seemed due to poor connection and/or DNS issues.

The Devs have done an astounding job to take me back a few years.

One might add that none of the other games were online. Granted, they were made well before the Internet was used for gaming. But still, E: D will attract many of the original Elite/F/F:FE gamers, and many of us will not really be interested in online play. It adds to the game, and then it doesn't. The AI is good, so meeting other players is really not a requirement for this game to be good.

As the OP wrote, we want a way to not play with trolls/gamebreakers.

The way the Frontier developers are doing this game is perfect for that playstyle and returning solo Elite/F/FFE gamers, because they're allowing a seamless switch between Solo and All modes.

If you hear that there are gankers hanging around a station you want to visit and just killing people for kicks, you can switch to Solo mode (or Private Group mode if you have friends), then visit that same station and you'll never see them. Then switch back to All mode in safer areas.

I've never seen a design like this, so I don't know how it will all balance out. This game will be boring if it's too safe, but I've spent enough time in other MMO's to know the potential downsides of full player PvP interaction. I'm interested in how it will turn out, as someone who likes opt-in PvP, but doesn't want my entire gameplay experience dominated by it. Interesting times ahead!

Apparently the solo offline mode already exists and is used by Frontier when doing demos at events. It's just a matter of time before they make it available to the punters.

Unfortunately I think we won't see offline until much closer to release.

With this solution it is a bit harder to pirate the game. Look at Diablo 3 : At the moment there is no working cracked Version of Diablo 3 out there.

This basicaly. Don't know what has been stated by the devs, but solo online mode also gives some advantiges to the player as well such as stats updates, inviting a friend to assist you in a mission and so on.

why play solo? :)
i dunno and never will know as i like flying with friends and solo mode is non existent for me in any multiplayer game, but i bet there are pilots with same reasoning behind solo play.

solo is good for casual players that value their time and want to minimize the risk, i prefer some challenges here and there (even if they are dumb challenges), also i like cooperative play and always when i want to be alone i can fly into unknown...alone :)

still making friends is big part of gaming and solo is cutting it off completely, but i am perfectly fine with solo players, we must all take as much fun as we can from our game time, i just think that those modes should never overlap (separate saves for each mode), but maybe then after some time solo players will be bored and will come to all group...anyway we only can use the tools that developers throw at us and if they think jumping through different modes should be possible then it should.

also p2p require quite good internet connection, but with every new year it improves so after 5-10 years it shouldn't be a problem anymore.

as for offline solo mode - it will not be same alive universe we all be playing in, if you have bad or no internet then maybe but i prefer changing sandbox universe :)

There will be a once-off online activation of the offline game once it is available and then it will be playable completely offline.

I am not that sure that this will realy happen. DB once said that he like the idea of solo online modes to prevent piracy. Be sure tha ED would be pirated very much if the give the game a solo offline mode.
