General Solution to representing player memorials in-game - Repurpose Tionisla Orbital Graveyard

Great idea this, seeing as we'll probably never get the proper Tionisla Graveyard, which was sort of announced at one of the Lavecons :p :) (2016 IIRC)

Wouldn’t it be better to go beyond the roll call idea and actually implement it as a genuine Ship Graveyard.
Take the ship most flown by each CMDR with the name, paint job, decals, etc. that they used and add it to the debris field that is the graveyard.

Make them indestructible, but scannable. The scan reveals the CMDR and their memorial message.

The ARRC have long petitioned FDev for the re-instatment of the Tionisla Orbital Graveyard using the Community Goal mechansim to action it.
While we welcome Drew's suggestion, we do not believe that any new station is required for this as installations are better suited to the purpose.

Awesome idea, really. I would add one small thing to it. Make the system permit locked but give everyone a permit. Keep the FC out.
Not sure how I'd enjoy not being able to park my carrier near my home of Brett High in Tionisla. It's unlikely that there would be the excess of carriers normally found in CG, engineer and other popular sites unless FDev provide some other rewarding reason to be there.

I flew my friend Tiger19 out to the Eagle nebula last year because his dad passed away. I paid for all his tritium at 60k per ton up to 7000 tons. Was meaningful to him. Recently my cousin Nick died at 46, its unknown to me at least how he died. I'd like to memorialize him. I've know Nick since I was a toddler. Rip, Nick Gambardella, 1974-2020. 😢

Yeah, I was having a hard time keeping up with the chat, never mind paying attention to the actual video itself. FDev, this is what you've done for me, so now it's a role-reversal.

More to the point, I never really liked "memorials", just as a concept. Striving for a monument to sate one's ego is one thing, but I don't want to send the message of "If you want to be in the game, all you have to do is die." I can sort of understand if it's like for an assassinated president, or to remember the hundreds of thousands dead by a global pandemic...but we don't need every guy and his dog to have one. Cemeteries are a thing, sure, but that's not supposed to be a tourist attraction.

Those are my thoughts. However, even spearating that out of the picture, I like the featuring of the original Elite lore, so I'm not complaining about that.

Beyond that, I tried to ask (which also got blurred out by the rapid-firing stream chat) about adding CODEX entries. I believe I made a separate forum thread on the issue, but basically, there could be a way to highlight prominent players (yes, PLAYERS, like the guys who PLAY THE GAME) if all it'd take is a few paragraphs, and wouldn't be as complicated as keying in where a physical beacon would be floating around.
I really don't want to see anything telling me who is prominent in the game.
FDev already pay too much attention to the many streamers that help them to push the game along, ignoring many players that are truly instrumental in keeping this game sane and fun to play.
All that would happen is that some players (deserving or otherwsie) would be highlighted for an ego trip, while others (equally deserving) would continue to be ignored.
Not a good idea. Sorry.

I support Drew's suggestion. Great way to memorialise lost ones. Yes, there may be some implementation considerations to ensure fair representation and so on, but that doesn't mean it's not a good idea. And given the graveyard's basis in lore, it would seem to make sense. Should I pass on during the game's life, I reckon it would be great to have one of my ships parked up as a wreck though (maybe with my CMDR's body entombed inside).

I love the idea.

In my dreams the graveyard would be like the real one (low wakable points of interest for various parts of the alphabet).
And then real ships (somewhat aged) based on the main ship the commander was flying at the time.
Maybe it can be done with adding a flag to a commanders account: "show memorial". And then let procedural generation do its job. Add ship to poi based on commander's database entry (where ship name, reg, skin, commander name will all be available).

To avoid misuse an account with the flag set will no longer be playable.
The graveyard could be "rebuild" on each maintenance cycle of the server, so the db queries and procedural generation don't have to be done in real time.

As I mentioned above, this is a good idea. However I can see a lot of people going un-noticed when they die.

For instance, I have Huntington's Disease and one day it will kill me. I have no family and any mates that I have don't play ED. I also only play solo so don't have any in-game friends. Should I die whilst the game is still active, no one would know. As much as it would be nice to have a memorial of me in the game, it just won't happen.

So even though the Tionisla graveyard is a good idea, it would be only for the very few commanders that are lucky enough to have friends or family that know about this game, and how they could arrange for a memorial to be set up.

I hope I'm making sence lol.

This is a good thought but the account would need to be locked, and the family may not want this if for example a daughter wants to continue playing her fathers account.

This could easily be solved by a snapshot of the ship at a moment in time - slightly more work for FD but that ensures it would never change.

This really hit home and I really hope you're doing ok Cmdr.

Going back to the OP, I think it's a wonderful idea and would like to see it implemented.
Even if it's only purpose was as a 'landmark pointer' for squad mates and friends to congregate and leave a few nice words in the chatbox.
Things like this are, imo, what sets Elite apart from other games/simulators, the feel of community and family.

Yes I am fine thanks. I still have a good few years left in me yet lol.

Instead of having individual memorials for passed commanders, maybe a single monument could be set up where people could fly to and remember passed loved ones. Similar to when you visit a monument to all who died during a war.
It would need to have a large 'no fire' zone around it too and bounties for anyone who disrespected that.

Actually with Odyssey due soon...ish, maybe a small outpost type of memorial could be created. In its social hub, there could be a 'quiet room' where you could actually sit and remember anyone you wanted to.

Good to hear you have some good times left :)
Kind of made me think of a totally different solution, if player could build their own (small) base somewhere and leave some logs there.
Then anyone could leave a legacy if they so wanted. Though the Tionisla graveyard would be more in tune with elite lore.

Yes, good idea. ;)
