Engineers Some advice on Marco Qwent and Modular Terminals

I have noticed comments on the forums lately on the difficulty / grind of gaining access to Marco Qwent. It’s not too difficult, it took me a few days play from a standing start. You may find the following information useful.

.
1 Sirius Permit, ie allied with Sirius Corp.
The quickest way to gain rep with a faction is to hand in bounties for that faction (unless you have several million cr of exploration data). Don’t bother with missions at this stage, it is terribly slow.
I went bounty hunting at Avik nav beacon. Or try Res locations at Luytens Star. Obviously use KWS. You could even killsteal from Authority ships at high security res location.
Once allied, you should get a permit mission for Sirius. Fly to another station with the Sirius Corp faction or just switch between solo and open mode in the usual way. You will get it eventually.
.
.
2 Qwent invite
Once you have the permit, fly to any station in the Sirius system, and repeat the above log in/ out until you get the Qwent invite.
.
.
3 Modular Terminals
Available as mission rewards in industrial or high tech systems in boom state. It helps if you have good rep with the faction, but not essential.
There are several such systems near Sirius (filter for state on the map), eg Sirius itself or Luyten’s Star. They are not that rare, but again log in / out or fly to another station.
Unfortunately you need 25, ie 7 missions (instead of 24 just to be awkward). Whenever you receive them donate immediately to Qwent just in case you get destroyed.
.
.
4 Gaining access to higher grade mods
Armoured or shielded mods use common materials, eg G1 armoured power plant needs 2 vanadium and 1 worn shield emitter. Get these to quickly move up the grades to stuff you do want, you can always remove them if you don’t need them.
3 G1 mods -> G2 access
3 G2 mods -> G3 access etc
After 30-35% on grade 3 you will unlock the next engineer, in Qwent’s case , Professor Palin.
.
Good luck!

It sounds easy on paper but in reality getting 25 Modular Terminals takes forever. Not to mention it's completely random what rewards missions will give you. I hope Frontier will alter/lower the unlock requirements, or at least make every commodity available at some starports. It makes no sense that some commodities can be bought and others can't.

i have a problem with your suggestion that missions take too long. For people who have a ship with Decent jump range & a fuel scoop,
going to Sothis, and doing the data delivery missions there would be quite quick. mainly because you already have suggested the log
in/log out mode switching & the missions are to the system next over.
You could also get the modular terminals there as well but i wouldn't count on it. But anyways, yea.

Mining is an easy way to get allied with a faction to get a permit, since it's pure profit. Rare goods is another good high profit method.
Sell your goods to a Sirius Corp controlled station. It takes about 7 million in profit.
But it never hurts to check what missions are being offered.

Don't you also need to learn of Qwent from that engineer in Kuhn?
(Always forget their name!)

It requires level 3 at 30% or higher to learn.

One way of getting that, is hand in shed loads of exploration data.

The other is spam a level 1 shield upgrade. (I think, could be thrusters!)
It requires very common shield emitters, which are found by blowing up almost anything.
And something else I've forgotten.

(I'm super helpful!)
In any case, I accidentally had enough to spam 23 upgrades. Lol
(All of which were rubbish!)

I went to industrial or high tech systems in boom state, but no matter how many times I refreshed and logged, no missions with modular terminal rewards appeared. Then I had an idea. I did a few delivery missions, and when I returned, there was a mission for modular terminals. When I completed it, there was another one. and then another, so I got 16 modular terminals in about an hour.

I went to a High Tech station called Atagat, I think, a couple of jumps "outwards" from Sirius. I played on and off over the day and got my 28(!). I did a bit of flipping between Open and Solo to see more missions, but didn't go crazy.

I don't think this is too hard.

Its difficult to know what people want, sometimes it seems like it's, "I WANT THE BEST KIT, NOW!!!!" but how long is that initial thrill going to last? I'm not saying things couldn't be improved but I actually think Engineers works pretty well, as long as you don't expect all the best kit after a few hours of play.

That would like be like skipping through a book and just reading the final chapter - or just watching the shootout at the end of the movie - fairly meaningless if you don't know the characters and what drives them.

The sad truth is that it is much more random than that. Over half of my modular terminals came from other economy types, and very few of them came from boom systems. More often than not, I found them by checking the mission boards in stations that had been the destination of missions I had taken from those high tech or industrial systems! One set even came from an agricultural economy!

Thankfully, it's done.

For those of us unwilling to exploit mode switching to get missions, it is not nearly so quick. It took me two weeks to get mine (playing four nights a week, roughly four hours a night).

I don't want to have Modular Terminals in my hold for more than a few hours, that's for sure. Unfortunately, until they get commodity storage going, you bet I want to unlock ASAP.

I'm having some trouble obtaining these as well. I got a few pretty early on after I got finally got the Sirius invitation mission to go visit Qwent. But since then, I haven't seen a mission offering them for two days.

If anyone has a few to spare, I'd happily buy them from you!

I have luck at boom high tech.

I may be wrong, but I think some of these rewards are restricted to specific conditions. You need to hunt for these conditions to get the specific reward.

Argh, I can no longer find Modular Terminals!

Sirius missions aren't spawning any, nor Luytens's Star, or any high tech boom systems nearby.... :( I'm stuck at 12. Lol

Why aren't they just a rare item somewhere far away, that only spawns in small numbers? Atleast that way we could unlock this        without wasting days at a time relogging. Lol

If I ever see a Marco Qwent in space, i think I'm going to murder him.... Lol

I just finished collecting 25 mod terminals (MTs) and couldn't find any near Sirius. So I thought I also need Pharmaceutical Isolators and found an outbreak system where the main faction was in an outbreak state. I did find MT missions at industrial stations around that area (approx. 60 lyrs away from Sirius). I also found them at a refinery/agriculture station, which according to current wisdom you shouldn't.

Some tips:

From my experience there definitely seems like a reduced chance of MTs near Sirius, not sure if this is intentional or not, so try to go somewhere further away (in my case 60 lyrs did the job). I found many more MTs in a much shorter time outside of the Sirius sphere than I did near Sirius where I only found one.

What I did was mission log the game several times at each station which didn't have MTs immediately present, this worked 3 times (i.e. 12 MT's).

I noticed that once I did a MT mission at a station that another never appeared again, even the next day, so I kept moving around taking other missions for different commodities/mats at different stations and then checking there for MTs. I would suggest moving station frequently.

Some stations/outpost offer very few missions with commodity rewards. I recommend leaving these stations and moving on to the next.

Also stations that offer a high diversity of commodities as rewards are more likely to eventually yield MTs when logging. Some industrial stations will only seem to offer a limited range. If you see the same commodities popping up for different missions, go to another station. It is unlikely to yield anything else.

Going to another industrial station/outpost in the same system can yield MTs even if the first one you visited did not. My sample size is small, but it seemed as if stations that were very close to each other seemed to offer similar commodities. Which can be a good or bad thing depending if MTs were present or not.

I didn't notice any particular fraction state giving more, but some fraction states will reduce your chances because they reduce the number of missions available (i.e. your number of rng rolls for MTs), for instance lock down state does this. Note this depends on the faction's state in the list not the system state. Possible that boom state factions are the best.

I've not even come across one. Driving me up the wall!!

Yeah, it's starting to wear me down.
Lol

4.5 hours spent this morning looking for MTs.
Found none.

Logged on to my laptop for 5 minutes at work while t was quiet.
Found a mission for them. In the station I was parked at. Lol

Ahhhh!

I keep finding missions for endless Micro Weave Cooling Hoses, if we had storage. I'd have a mountain of them by now.
But i bet when i need them... Nope. None here!

Thankyou for all this advice, I still haven't had any luck finding a modular terminal though. I will just keep checking mission board in high tech and refinery stations in boom state. Got an achievement today for completing 250 missions so that's cool I guess..

Edit: After I posted this I went and checked Sirius again, efremov plant had a mission rewarding 4 modular terminals haha hopefully they have more there later on.
