Some help outfitting an Anaconda for long range exploration

You can either run with the cookie cutter build (featuring cutbacks to everything in the name of a couple of LY extra jump) or do it to your preference.

Cookie cutter builds can be found everywhere on this forum. For exploration they are pretty much one and the same thing for all ships, adjusted slightly to fit into or take advantage of differing internal space levels.

But as for any kind of personal build, only you can decide what you want. My only real advice: take a damn fighter. They are much better for buzzing around an asteroid field in than the 'conda itself, and there's no real penalty for smashing the fighter into a floating rock.

Seconded. I missed not having one on my trip to Beagle and have now added a fighter hangar at Colonia.

Fighter hanger - is this of any practical use or just simply to alleviate the boredom on a long trip?

@ StiTch: I wasn't sure I understood how it could help in asteroid field as it can't assist in mining for mats in any way; can it???

The suggestions and knowledge offered by everybody in the thread were very helpful in finalizing the ship's loadout, which now looks like this: (almost 60 ly range)

https://coriolis.edcd.io/outfit/ana...eloBhBmSQUwIYHMA28QgIwV0A=&bn=Explor anaconda

Mods:
armor - heavy duty 5
powerplant - armored 1, added a bit of mass, but gave me 49%+ integrity
thrusters - i modded and tested both dirty and clean drive 5. Went with dirty drive 5, no heat problems, better handling
power distributor - engine focused 3. Speed is 233, boost is 311, not too bad
heat sinks, sensors, life support - all lightweight 5 except life support which is 3 (missing one engineer for 4)
frame drive - a 52% roll, 60 ly range with a full loadout and fuel tank
shields - enhanced low power 5
surface scanner - fast scanner as i prefer it and my technique on scanning while approaching sucks :D
fuel scoop and afmus - unmodded as it adds weight and they can be repaired if needed

I went with a 2 srvs hangar although it cost me half a ly range. Thought about adding more defence since the jump range is good, but decided i like the thrill of some danger. 3 afmus and cargo racks cause they weight nothing and who knows what you might find or want to carry from a far away outpost or something :D (saw no reason to take 5 afmus or empty module spaces). Dropped the fuel cntr. cause the limpets were too heavy. Overall i could easyly have more jump range with a lighter srv hangar, unmodded surface scanner, etc, but what the heck its good enough!

So, gathering some Yttrium for emergency jump overcharging, and me and crew pilot Analise say goodbye to friends and enemies in the bubble heading out to Colonia tonight! Probably will post about the journey if i find anything fun. Thanks again!

Good luck mate. I'm doing something similar with my anaconda. I dislike the ship personally but you can't argue with it's utility options and jump range.

Was kinda thinking I might make this a short ish trip and refit an Orca next time and get rid of the anaconda. Dunno how much of a hit the jump range could take but it might be worth it.

No real purpose, but let's be honest, exploration has no real purpose overall...sorry to cause any confusion, but when I mention asteroid fields, I mean simply cruising in them.

It's kinda difficult to assign importance to tools when there is nothing to do that requires tools out there. Some people take mining equipment on their exploration builds, but it'll be the same materials you can get a few LY away from your home station in the bubble.

If your ship can jump and has a fuel scoop and advanced discovery scanner fitted, it can basically be an explorer. Anything extra is either for survivability or fun/immersion; arguably the fighter fits into both categories...and meant I could take any lumbering ship I want (iCutter, where my last trip was in the far more agile iClipper) and still fly like a midget on steroids and class A illegal stimulants through the most beautiful asteroid fields and canyons I've seen.

Oh, and it makes for some far more interesting screenshots.

I took a fighter on my first trip with my Anaconda and then dumped it when I got back.
The fighter can't help with exploring the planet surface. The Anaconda can't keep up with the fighters speed, the fighter can't get very far away from the mother ship and you can't dismiss your ship.
So the fighter is forced to fly slowly enough so the mother ship can keep up.

Granted the fighter has better maneuverability and better visibility if you're just exploring a small area.
I launched it a couple of times on that first trip just to play with it, but I left it behind on my second trip because I found no practical use for it in the way I explore.
