Some mission parameters make no sense!

So the controlling faction of a station asks me to get hold of military plans or rebel transmissions as it would be a great help to them. Yet this is illegal and if they catch me helping them by scanning me i get fined.

These missions need a rethink as they make no sense.

To me they make perfect sense.

You're on a black op. If you get caught, they disavow any knowledge of you.

Not if they are "black ops"

It would make sense if a different faction than the station controller offered it in an attempt to undermine the station controller. Otherwise the scenario is hey guys here's the data you wanted but you fined me for getting it for you.

The material will always be illegal as you have to scoop it in open space so it's stolen. That means you have to make a smuggler-type run to get it back to the originating station. They warn you the activity is illegal and as mentioned above they will disavow any involvement. You still have to get past station security and there are several threads around about smuggling goods in. The best consensus seems to be a full-speed run through the slot to get inside before the scan is complete. There are different opinions as to whether you need to go cold or use silent running in addition.

To use something that many people would understand to illustrate:

The CIA tells you - break into the Soviet Embassy (I know I know, this is just an example), steal these documents, return them to us. You say, OK BOSS!

That night you break into the embassy... but unfortunately you tripped an alarm and the American cops catch you and .... um... slap a big fine on you.

You think the CIA's gonna waltz in there and say "Hey it's cool.. he was just breaking in there to grab those documents for us. He doesn't need the fine" ?

In any case, I've done those missions and I never get fined. You get fined only when you GET CAUGHT.

That's still not right... If the faction who gives you the job and is allied with you scans you and gives you a fine this scanning you and then is giving you a fine something is wrong.

So you return to your CIA headquarter, get searched on the entry and get a fine for your job you was asked to carry out for the CIA.

You see what is wrong with that?

You are mistaken. You get a fine ONLY WHEN the cops scan you.

When you return to headquarters and turn it in without cops scanning you, no fines are issued.

How would the cop that responded to the alarm know you're working for US Govt faction? To him you're just a 2-bit burglar that tried to rob the place.

I agree, that these mission parameters make sense.

But what about the piracy missions? "Get us 6 tonnes of XYZ! But they must be stolen!!!"

Why should anyone care if the goods they need are stolen or not?

Well and when the cops are green to me...?

If you are on very friendly terms with cops and they catch you with stolen goods.... what, you expect them to say "Oh you're my buddy... I'll look the other way for you"...?

If they do that, then the cops are CORRUPT. They need to be removed!

It's not the station that fines you, it's the rozzers patrolling the exterior. They work independent of the station. It's like if the CIA asks you buy 20 kilos of heroin for some reason or another but they don't want the rest of the government to know what they're doing. So you buy it, and just before pulling into Langley, Virginia, you get stopped and searched by the local police, who work independently of the CIA. Well the CIA doesn't want, let's say the FBI, to find out. So they just let you get arrested and fined (and imprisoned in real life). Basically, haul ass into the station so you don't get scanned.

For God and country.
