Newcomer / Intro Some newcomer generic questions

Hello,

I am a new player, just wanting to give a shot to the game. I have several questions after watching some videos and playing the tutorial. First lets present my intentions:
  • I am aiming for exploring and the least thing I would like to do is combat.
  • I would like to take a casual gaming pad too, as RL is out there.
As far as I have read is that if you want to advance and get better you need to first grind credits in order to acquire the equipment needed to fulfill the goals. Now the question is: What type of non combat missions would be the best? Is it better to do small around the starting point (Matet) missions or go a bit far away?

For starting exploration, would be better an Asp or maybe go at first for a Cobra Mark 3 until I get a hand on the game?

Any hints would be really welcome.

Laser mining platinum seems the rage atm. Find yourself a hotspot or 2 overlapping or even 3 overlapping and you farm credits.
This way you'll have a billion or so quick as depending on how big your mining ship is. Bigger loads more credits.
Asp X is a good choice for exploring.
As is a diamondback explorer. Or even a krait phantom If your flush.
Engineering your frameshift drive to extend your range is paramount.
Running passenger missions is quite lucrative as well.
Welcome to elite.

Welcome Commander.

I would recommend you follow this video. No real equipment necessary, and can even be done in a sidewinder. It’s the perfect start for you.

Just a couple of systems and you’ll have your Cobra Mk III and complete a few more for the Asp.

Definitely get yourself the Asp Explorer. It’s a great exploration ship especially for the price (and you’ll be able to afford it in no time if you follow the video).

When you get your Asp, do take the time to visit Felicity Farseer and engineer your FSD. It will mean you will have to get yourself materials, but it will be worth it - even a Grade 3 upgrade will make your exploration life a lot easier.

But this is for the future. Follow the video for now and take it from there.

Good luck Commander o7

Hello and welcome!

You could go mining or you could start in the ship you’re in, scan the system you’re in. Maybe, if you can afford one, get the DSS scanner and probe all the bodies in the system you’re in. Maybe if you can afford an SRV, land on some, scan the biological/Geological sites on them.
Move over to the next system. Repeat.
Eventually, as long as you haven’t died, you get to sell that data somewhere.
You’re learning all the stuff you need to learn, to explore, whilst earning money.
I don’t know what you have in mind, but really, you don’t need billions to build a sensible explorer that will take you almost anywhere you want to go. I highly recommend a Dolphin, others will have other recommendations.
Whatever you decide, have fun.

If you're into exploring, go that Road to riches thing. As I hear, gets you nice credits and some exploration experience(never done it myself).
DBX is solid cheaper choice for starters, good to have it in your garage later in a game also.
In this build with only fsd engineered, you get over 56 ly jump, enough for any serious exploration.
I did 60k ly round trip in 55ly jump python(engineered).

Edit : play in coriolis or edsy with ships, see for what you have resources.
In posted build you can play with cheaper or smaller modules.

Whilst PvP and combat can be fun, if you do choose to fly in Open, ensure you're set up to escape if attacked.

I very strongly suggest you don't carry much data in Open until you feel you are proficient. A rebuy is relatively easy to afford - but you won't get back those hours spent in the black if you get popped before you can hand your data in.

Solo also allows you hi-res pictures if that's your thing.

You dont need to grind anything, for you most stuff will be new so just go and see whats out there.

Starter missions give you a flavour. Most if not all missions can have NPC enemies appearing, they can be evaded without any combat necessary, Data Courier missions will generally have less and you dont need to return to the station so youre always on the move, exploring. Get an SRV and use it.

Do your own thing and when youre bored of that start doing the grinds like Road to Riches and Mining.

And AspX or DBX every time for noob explorer. Later youll go in a Conda or a Phantom but those little ships are just so much fun.

First of all, forget about the guides who tell you that you "need" to grind credits to get anywhere. Don't believe me? Check the date stamps on those guides and compare them to the time some of us have been playing 😁. Sure, a little money helps with acquiring ships and equipment - but money is so easy to come by these days that a lot of people get into an Anaconda first and then ask themselves what to do with it (often shortly before it is shot out under them by a random NPC, too).

This is what I wrote in a similar thread a few days ago:

Here's where the experience (of others) comes in. You can make that money through exploration in the (about) same time ;).
Start of with the basic Sidey. Do one mission, ideally (for my example) to end up at Matet. Equip a D rated Fuel Scoop, ditch the guns and swap in a 2D FSD (slightly more than 10k total).
Then go out and do a FSS scan of these three systems:
BPM 26940
HIP 58121
LHS 1939
They'll give you slightly above 100k Cr. each. Use that money to buy a DSS and a 2B FSD (might even be enough for a 2A FSD, but let's not get greedy). The DSS will multiply your earnings, so now go and do the list found here, DSS'ing all the listed planets:
18 planets, 73 jumps, 9 MCr.

Just don't land anywhere outside the starter area (unless you want to lose your permit), as that'll definitely give you an exploration rank.

That player wasn't interested in jumping while he could get the same money in the same time from a trade loop - fair enough. I, too, wouldn't go exploring (any more) for a measly 9 MCr. - if I'm allied with a local faction, that's 3-4 wanted tourist missions, or about the same number of base data stealing missions. Either of these, though, recommend a high player level for a reason.

That money would then be good enough to get e.g. a Cobra Mk.III and outfit it with all the bells and whistles. It's not quite enough for one of my favourite exploration ships, the Dolphin, but then you'd have still some ways to go before you can properly outfit it, and the Cobra is all you need to take you there.
With that Cobra, you could start:
  • find a tourist economy station you like and take missions from the local factions, choose as far as possible the REP reward in order to become (ultimately) allied with as many of them as possible
  • once you're allied, you'll get access to well paying missions (unless I have other goals, I usually don't go out of the hangar for less than a million ;))
  • while doing that, work at unlocking the Engineers (check out your right HUD, home tab, Engineers - or Inara)
  • for engineering, you'll also need materials - data, manufactured and raw. When you feel up to it, a trip out to the Crystalline Shard sites bay be both useful (for filling up raw materials) as well as a test whether you really want to go into exploration.
  • for an explorer, a must have is the Guardian FSD booster. Check out this guide for it - and yes, that's advanced content.
  • regarding the Engineers: one of the first (and also most useful for an explorer) is Felicity Farseer in Deciat. Whatever else you do - don't go into Deciat in Open if you don't like combat. A lot of people like to hang out there and shoot down newbies.

Almost forgot one of my favourite standalone exploration builds:

Yes, a stripped down Anaconda can jump ~70 ly - but that baby can fly circles around it 🙂 (and has a few other advantages that are not explicitely visible from the datasheet).

Missions are basically the same everywhere. Be aware that the rewards increase with faction reputation though. A popular first home base for new players (outside the starter region) is LHS20.

For starting exploration, actually the Hauler is a nifty little ship, jumps 30ly with minimal investment. Yes it's ugly and doesn't have a nice sound, but it's super cheap and gets the job done.

Edit: oh and yeah, Ashnak is right - don't take the YouTube guides as gospel, #1 they become obsolete over time, #2 it's not really necessary to rush through and get the first billion in 12 hours.
You can make money with literally anything these days - trucking, explo, combat, just try out what you enjoy most.

If you want non combat operations you should start with courier missions within matet space until you get used to the control system and use of your ship. You will find that once you leave matet system you will not be able to re-enter, earn some credits and upgrade your ship so that you can do longer jumps before leaving matet space. Also be sure to outfit with the best core components you can afford, with that in mind you could try your hand at gathering exploration data. I'm sorry to say this but you may well have to gear up for a killing too.. see you in the dark Cmdr

Hi,
First off, you'll notice 2 options :- "Open" and "Solo".
In open you'll meet other commanders (not so hits) who will be friendly, ignore you and seal club you.
One option is to join a private group - like Mobius - where PvP is generally prohibited.

You can explore in any ship, though you will need some basic equipment:-
Fuel scoop (biggest you can afford/fit)
Best fsd you can afford/fit
Class D life support (minimum mass)
Minimum shields (bumpy landings can kill)
Forget weapons
System scanner, surface scanner, composition scanner
Maybe an SRV Module.
Lighten ship as much as possible to increase jump range.

For exploring, think up/down rather than just heading to Sag A.

I have an alt CMDR in a standard Sidewinder heading out to "Temple" region. Fuel capacity is 2 jumps then refuel, so use the route plotter and filter.
I've already found a number of undiscovered systems.

The AspX, DBX, Phantom are all good explorers, with possible jump ranges >65ly, that will get you to a new area fast, but that jump will take you past a lot of systems.

Here's another cheap build with only fsd engineered. By now you get the idea.
It's 46ly jump and under 6 million credits.

Also you can use LYR space(power play). There you get 15% off on all ships and modules they sell. Useful when starting.

Bit off topic, but still could be useful info for all new players(and me😁) :
Seasoned Cmdrs, what would be "the best" LYR station, in terms of ships and modules for sale?

Welcome to the boards and Elite OP.

My advice is to not overthink it.

Any ship can explore. Start out with bubble exploring. As a new player, the system right next door is an opportunity just like one 10,000 light years away, with the only real difference whether you can get a first discovery.

Pick a ship, whichever you can afford and feel a connection to. Mount a DSS and learn how to use it.

Mount good shields, an A-rated FSD and a fuel scoop. A SRV if landings interest you, and set off on the adventure. There is really no need to go far at first. Start close to home, get a feel for it, the money will follow. Come back to a station and add to, or tweak the ship as you adjust to it and learn more about Elite. As your knowledge, understanding and ship improve you'll venture farther, until one day you're telling us about the weather at Beagle Point.

I just checked -- there isn't a single one LYR station that has all the ships and modules. But there are a few that have a very wide selection, such as in the Borr or Diaguandri systems. Basically you need to make use of tools like EDDB to figure out where to get the specific outfit.
