Microsoft's Xbox Live service will be adopting a Discord-esque system allowing multiple members to use the same screen name.

For example, taking my current Xbox Gamertag of "H Jameson" as an example, then someone else could also choose the name "H Jameson" and have a #1234 after it, "becoming H Jameson#1234".

It sparks my curiosity then, as to how this will affect first discoveries and bounty boards in Elite, as they are cross-platform.

Could make for some interesting politics as people on Xbox use the same name as fellow Xbox CMDRs, or even PC CMDRs.

Shall we all change our gamertag to "Brian" in protest?

I registered my Commander name on Microsoft games already, and it was already taken on PS4. I don't have either system though.

If someone wants WR3ND-XYZ or whatever, fair game, I guess.

Just waiting for the Switch version... ;)

But yeah, I think Commander names should have been made exclusive across platforms since they're all used in the tagging, but I guess it's well and too late for that now. Thankfully I'm a relative nobody in the wider communities with a fairly unique name. Some other Commanders might have it a bit more rough though.

It also seems weird that you'd have to use the same player name across different games in these console systems. Who thought that was a good idea? Stalkers?

I think it will have to be seen how games themselves display the new Gamertags.

I'm not entirely clear on whether the #1234 is just shown on the Xbox Live interface, or if it is also on the games themselves.

If it turns out that games don't display the hashtag... Well sure exploration would be affected but I think the really interesting side to it all would be making alt accounts on Xbox using the same name as someone else, and racking up a huge bounty to try and defame that player.

Thing is, that wouldn't be breaking any rules as FD agreed to Xbox rules themselves in order to publish on that platform.

That's why I'm allowed a CMDR Jameson name on Xbox even though I never reserved the privilege in Kickstarter, as FD has no power over Xbox Gamertags.

What happens currently when an Xbox user joins the ED universe with the same name as a PC CMDR?

i.e an Xbox user has the username "Bob" and hasn't changed it since owning a Microsoft account but doesn't play elite dangerous, ED came out and a different bob on PC "Bob" signed up as "CMDR Bob", 6 months later xbox user "Bob" joins the universe thus known also as "CMDR Bob" so in theory its already possible no?

In that case, the console player is the evil twin. Obviously.

This thread confuses me , the names ARE different ,I don't see what could be confused by it.
Depends on whether ED displays the hashtag.

If not then for end users the names will be identical.

And can you already use hashtag as part of a PC CMDR name ?

If so, then that's ripe for all sorts of fun and misery
