The conspiracy theorist in me (and common sense) is insisting that this means the government(s) know more than they're letting on.

The ex government worker in me tells me to supress that urge and assume they are just doing it unnecessarily to look good for the home audience in the papers.

I've been lunching with some microbiology types <burps> and I have the beer fuelled low down on why borders are shutting for this one and didn't before.

With SARS as an example the Chinese government didn't fess up anything was going on until it had already been spread from China around the globe, with this one as other countries knew before (or at the early stages of) the spread closing borders is actually a useful thing to do. In theory.

Yes. And there are already people screaming "oppression" at the British Airways HQ, because they were prohibited from going to catch teh virus and democratically spread it around the globe. And people in US who had been in a "voluntary" quarantine after returning from China and shocked and disgusted that they are rounded up and locked up after trying to escape before the mandatory 72 hour period. :LOL:
I feel bad for having a laugh at this, I really do, but the stupidity of some people is staggering.

I'm OK with letting people go catch it, just don't let them mingle with the rest of us afterwards. Same as the anti-vaxxers.

Well, it's a bit more serious than a flu, because (from what I understand) it basically attacks and kills the cells on the surface of your respiratory apparatus so although it's not THAT dangerous in itself and your immune system quickly develops antibodies, it leaves you open for some serious bacterial infection afterwards. And THAT is what's killing people.
So similarly to HIV and many other viral illnesses, it's not the virus itself that's deadly, it's the next guy around the corner, so to speak.

Everyone is afraid of dying. You can try and face your fear, but honestly, I've yet to see bona fide proof that facing any subconscious feeling does any good to anyone. Could it be like Paltrow selling all her "bodily smells" and making people buy it? Well, whatever rocks their boats.

I have a pretty positivistic POV on reality. I don't think life as such necessarily has any "meaning", but I do recognize that most living organisms try to stay alive, and in some ways you could call that a goal. If evolution came up with a new species that wasn't afraid of dying, how long do you think it would take before it was wiped from the gene pool?

With this epidemic I'm worried, but I'm not as scared as I have been. That's probably due to lack of information. Always take the blue pill. Stay away from the red ones.

I would recommend that you read a book by Carlos Casteneda: "The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge"

It might change your perspective.
