Something wicked this way comes

You're welcome...and this is the first bit of news that made me 'squee!' in a long time...yes...50+ year old men do have that happen on occasion.

It happens to me on occasion. Ok, not normally on game forum but hey, what ever takes your fancy. ;)

And to SJA, if your lurking (and I know your always lurking) welcome back sometime soon :D

Oh, excellent. It's great when a developer is mad keen on tackling the project in front of them. Nothing beats good old raw enthusiasm.

Looking forward to more NPC complexity.

AI tweak - "Be afraid... be very afraid... Mistress of the Minions shall return..." (SJA)

Hi Commanders,

You may have already heard the GOOD NEWS, like I did:

Image_2015-08-25_11-25-20.jpg

SJA should be back to hopefully resuming her AI tweak project! If only this could come with 1.4!!! :)

What are the improvements that you, as experienced pilots, would like to see implemented?
From my side, I would kill to see NPCs:

- use chaff more often, and some of them using double chaff.

- use shield cells more often, and earlier (not when the shield is almost completely down since it takes time for the cell to trigger and stabilize the shield).

- use max pips to ENG and boost subsequently when they chase you.

- be better at interdiction (both to interdict and escape).

- attempt to high-wake when it is obvious they are going to lose the fight (outgunned / outnumbered, or shield has dropped and low hull while their opponent is still in good shape).

- interdict only players from the same league (a Harmless Adder should not interdict a player flying a battle Python, an Elite Clipper should not interdict a new player...you know, to avoid complaints that the AI should be toned down).

While I do immensely appreciate the improvement that has been done to the AI lately, there are still many situations where it feels wrong, almost like cheating, to fight NPCs...or worse, like an annoyance when you are being interdicted. Let's face it, you don't always see other players while playing Elite, and NPCs should come as close as a challenge/threat as real players.

I would like to say that this is good and welcome news, but that would depend on your own ideas of good and welcome. Nice to see the good work will continue, lets hope the AIs can learn to use limited ammo, like the rest of us?

She needs to have another look at the DC, as it works very well on some ships, but still has issues with distance and speed with others.

Welcome back goddess, your charges have no doubt missed your tutoring and discipline; many have been seen loitering behind stations; plotting the down fall of the humans.

It has been confirmed that most ammo is limited for NPCs, such as missiles, shield cells and I believe railguns...but not frag cannons for instance.
Also, any change there would not not part of an AI tweak but gameplay / design.

SJA has said that almost all of these things have already been developed, or will be developed soon. She is pretty evil :D

AI using scb's and constantly leaving when in danger is going to make for a very boring frustrating game. But then again the issue is more that scb's exist in the first place.

I'd like to see them use flight-assist-off mode, just as another option for getting out of "pitching battles" where the most maneuverable ship will win. Also to use vertical thrusters to tighten/expand any turning loops they do

Good news - looking forward to see her changes on AI behaviour when flying backwards as she announced.
I think the first thread I ever posted on this forum way over a year ago was about how trivial beating the AI becomes when flying backwards and it's been nagging me ever since.

Well, you would also take into account the rank of the NPC. Different ranks = different behaviors.

SJA already explained that for instance, low level NPCs have limited control of pip management.
An Elite NPC should give challenge both during the fight and at the end when it attempts to flee.
I actually like when an NPC attempts to flee and I manage to take it down a few seconds before he jumps! And if I miss it, well, i'll be luckier next time :)

SJA also explained that they do not really need flight assist off since they have perfect control of ALL thrusters (in a way we can't do via a HOTAS).
