Something wicked this way comes

AI using scb's and constantly leaving when in danger is going to make for a very boring frustrating game. But then again the issue is more that scb's exist in the first place.

This, we already have people [female dog] about scbs in pvp we don't need to add the pve crowd to the mess as well. But again looking at the module itself might just be the simplest fix.

I'm wondering if the forum gag is being removed or if she is still going to be silenced on the forums.

edit: hello merge

Fear for their lives. A sidewinder may not engage on an Anaconda.

Plus some better movement strategies. Currently they will stay out of fire, in every case. Even if that means that they can not attack me. Their priorities are something like: First, never get in sight of fire and last, actually attack.

It often ends up with 5 minute annoying turning without the NPC hitting once. Lame and most importantly, ANNOYING. Can't they just die if they decide not to fight? Man.

Well, so far NPCs carry only one shield cell bank as far as I can tell.
Unlike players.

My point is that I would like to see them being able to use at least one cell on time, and not when their shield is almost entirely depleted, which is too late.

EDIT: Hello merge...and if only the OP could change the title for something more explicit...you know, containing "AI", "tweak", "SJA"...

Is this rumour true then?
That is wonderful.

I was wondering, is she the only AI programmer involved with ED?

Doubtful, there are certainly more, however she was first who did serious combat AI overhaul and communicated a lot on forums. I personally would like to chat with other AI coders, because ED heavily relies on NPCs, and they certainly would like to hear specific feedback. However, Sandro and Mike already covers this as designers I guess. Considering how forums sometimes are, you can fully respect coders not wanting to engage unfortunately. Also they are most likely very very busy.

Nooooooo! She's not allowed to change anything until such time as my unshielded Asp docks safely in let's say, a year, tops?

Hi Commanders,

You may have already heard the GOOD NEWS, like I did:

View attachment 57462

SJA should be back to hopefully resuming her AI tweak project! If only this could come with 1.4!!! :)

What are the improvements that you, as experienced pilots, would like to see implemented?
From my side, I would kill to see NPCs:

- use chaff more often, and some of them using double chaff.

- use shield cells more often, and earlier (not when the shield is almost completely down since it takes time for the cell to trigger and stabilize the shield).

- use max pips to ENG and boost subsequently when they chase you.

- be better at interdiction (both to interdict and escape).

- attempt to high-wake when it is obvious they are going to lose the fight (outgunned / outnumbered, or shield has dropped and low hull while their opponent is still in good shape).

- interdict only players from the same league (a Harmless Adder should not interdict a player flying a battle Python, an Elite Clipper should not interdict a new player...you know, to avoid complaints that the AI should be toned down).

While I do immensely appreciate the improvement that has been done to the AI lately, there are still many situations where it feels wrong, almost like cheating, to fight NPCs...or worse, like an annoyance when you are being interdicted. Let's face it, you don't always see other players while playing Elite, and NPCs should come as close as a challenge/threat as real players.
So...I created the above thread to collect ideas from players about how to improve the AI...
...and it was merged in a thread where people are basically typing "Yeah!", "Really?", "OMG!"...
Definitely a very pertinent merge...

I was surprised to find me having posted in one of the new OPs threads. It's not a bad thread and not a bad title, but I usually avoid posting in inveterate cheerleaders threads.

Unmerging it may be a lot of work, but is there any chance we can have a thread discussing improvements without all the whoop-whoop background noise and without it being merged into this one?

You got that right^^ hope I get my shieldless Conda back to dock before she returns. 2000+ scans is a lot to lose...

One can only hope.

I just wish FD would let more devs off the leash with regards to communications with the playerbase.

One reason SJA is loved so much isn't just because she was working on an aspect of the game that is very important to many players, but also that her enthusiasm for her work bled through in her posts to the players.

If only FD would allow more devs to communicate freely. The can give them some simple guidelines. No revealing what shouldn't be revealed yet. No getting into arguments with players - just state facts and get out of the thread. They could limit it to the more senior and experienced members of the team, those less likely to make a communications boo-boo.

We have seen how players go all ga-ga over dev posts. Even those who are frequently critical of FD get all giddy over an SJA post.

Here's hoping FD open up on the comms and understand, while letting devs talk is a risk, its also potentially a major boost to customer relations.

The problem with 'the staff' taking part in the forums is it puts them on the spot. We the riff-raff can come at them from so many angles, with suggestions, criticism and generally trying to influence the future of the game. We do this all the time in the forums generally; but to have a 'target', or an individual, to focus on, means that individual has a choice. To ignore or to give the answers that follow the party line. If they offer up a future concept for the game, no matter how well presented or practical, the concept may be. It will be shot down, by someone and then others will jump on that band-wagon. No matter what the subject, there will always be those that have an issue and WILL expect an answer; as now they are talking to a real person.

The goddess has dealt with this issue so far in basically three ways. 1st, she is popular, liked and in some cases admired. This could be based part on the fact that she is a 'she' and we are mostly male; therefore we are nice to the lady, as most boys are. 2nd, her work has made a noticeable and positive improvement to the game and those that say otherwise, are often shot down, by us gallant males. 3rd, her input to the forums, has been positive and limited to the facts. She dose not speculate, argue or get bogged down in debates; she tells it as it is, but at the same time, she picks the posters she replies to, with care.

Indeed. In the same way, the standout attraction from Gamescon for me was the Q&A sessions with Eddie Symons. FD need to learn that they don't have to maintain near paranoid levels of secrecy regarding development, and that their own highly engaged developers are their best avenue of communication with the playerbase. These guys have street cred with us that you can't buy or manufacture.

... and welcome back, Mistress Sarah. I have been a bad boy and should be punished ... :p
