Sony PS4 VR headset support for Elite

I hope this gets supported as soon as Frontier gets a development kit. The news I have just read is that Oculus Rift is not good enough to work with consoles, so they are not supporting a console release. Bad luck that.
But as I intend to play Elite on the PS4 (I know I have high expectations of it coming in the next 12 months), I dont own a PC, I want the VR experience and it looks like in the end of 2014 or into 2015 the Sony VR headset will come out for the PS4. Now Oculus has let me down I hope it's better quality with more features.
Obviously if Elite PS4 releases earlier I will just play on my living room TV.

Now there's a thought - hijack the Lounge room to play Elite.

That's what I'm doing, 46 inches of Elite: Dangerous goodness.

Also it automatically provides a game-play tim;e management system. The tapping foot when my loving wife comes home and wants to watch the TV. ;)

I was staring lovingly at the new Samsung curved OLED screen in John Lewis on the weekend. I was thinking god wouldn't E: D starfields look stunning on that. :D

Nope.

Current achieved stretch goals won't allow for it:
- MAC support about 3 months after release
- Planetary Landings about 1 year after release

Currently we don't exactly know WHAT exactly should be regarded as "release" as it was planned for March 2014 but Frontier Development has announced a "Gamma" period (As in Alpha, Beta, ... Gamma) starting in March which allows the backers to play the game but the game will not be retailed at that moment. Currently it is not exactly known how long Gamma is going to be. My guess is that it could be 1-3 months.

Elite: Dangerous is not announced for PS4 as of yet so I don't think it is a viable idea that it would be released on that platform in the timeframe you're speaking of.

I think Sony VR headset isn't even announced yet? And OR not being "good enough" to work with consoles is :) Companies just want to earn their share of profits in this.

Still, if PS4 version of ED is coming, and Sony VR headset is real thing, it will be very easy for them to support it, as they will have everything else in place already.

With components electronics current, and the video games, we are really fortunate to take advantage of all this progress. They add of happiness to our lives.

:)

What Palmer Lucky actually said was that consoles are too limited.
"We're seeing games that are already saying they're gonna run in 720p on next gen so they can barely hit 60 in 2D. It's hard to imagine them running a VR experience that's on par with PC. And certainly five years from now the experiences and the technology for virtual reality that will be available on PC is going to be be so far beyond anything that a console can provide.

What we're most excited about - really the core direction of our company - is trying to make something that works on platforms that are moving quickly and that are continuously getting more powerful, and consoles are not those."

The PS4 VR kit is a bit of a rumour at the moment, so it will be interesting to see how that pans out.

Agree, console versions are not announced yet and I think it is not the priority for FD ... ;)

There is hope for a PS4 release at least I suppose, most devs have been saying that it has only taken them around 6 months to port from PC to PS4. If E: D is enough of a success then it would make sense for FD to port it over.

I am a little disappointed that Palmer has said that the PS4/XB1 are too limited to support the Rift. I don't see why not, as technically they should be capable. Perhaps this is more of a corporate thing, where MS/Sony want to push their own agenda's; so they don't want to work with Oculus

Technically there would be nothing stopping you plugging in the Rift (HDMI/USB), but without official support this would leave 3rd party devs in the position of having to write their own layer to replace the SDK/API.

In his fresh interview it seems Palmer says that PS4/XB1 won't be able to deliver 1080p/60fps, which could be true, as their performance will stay locked for very long time (5 years at least). However, for most of people 1080p/30fps is enough. So we will see some form of VR supported on at least PS4 - they have played with OR dev kit using their PS4 prototypes and they had no problems with it.

Anyway, it's up to Sony and games to support OR or any kind of VR in PS4. If they do, there won't be problem with it.

Besides all the porting, the network code for Elite Dangerous will be pretty specific as it will be Peer2Peer when 2 people are in an instance but it will be Client-Server when it comes to updates about the universe, savegames and all other general stuff. I'm not sure if the PSN or XBOXLive are up to that.

As far as I have heard, they don't have that kind of restrictions anymore. They just need allowed connection to meta server anyway.

Hmmm, they must be up-scaling to 1080p then. I can say from experience that anything under 60fps, is not just jarring; it is downright vomit inducing with a HMD. 30fps is just unacceptable for VR I am afraid :(

What he said! 30fps is fine for a regular monitor, or TV, but sucks for VR. It needs to be 60fps or it's just not worth doing.

Maybe, but... the frame rate delivery depends on how efficient/optimized is your delivery system (game engine and so forth) and on the workload. If you program for a fixed known target then it becomes a matter of adjusting the load, even if the graphical beauty is a bit lost.

I bet the current consoles could run classical wireframe elite (with hidden line removal!) at 60fps in 1080p :p

The OR inventor has been shunned by Sony and Microsoft I think that's why he said what he said, and is wrong. He said before that OR will be for mobile phones. But PS4 is vastly more powerful than mobile phones.
He goes on about struggle for 1080p 60fps in "2d" let alone 3d. But does he know his own product is 2d not even 3d? The OC is a 2d screen split in half, 60fps for each eye slightly different image, but that is not 120fps overall in 1080p. A 1080p OC digitally outputs 60fps in 2d.
Or has the OC changed since I last saw how it works?

The difference being that people's expectation of the quality of the appearance of the graphics on a mobile device will be much lower than what people expect on the PS4.

Also there is practically no difference in the way you have defined 3D here. All 3D graphics representations are rendered to a 2D frame for display, be that a single device or two separate views.

The OR on mobile devices is a bit of a misquote (which game journalism seems to be doing a lot more of nowadays(probably just for clickbait)).

This is what John Carmac actually said.
"The way I believe it's going to play out is you will eventually have a head-mounted display that probably runs Android, as a standalone system, that has a system-on-a-chip that's basically like what you have in mobile phones,"

So basically he's talking about the future (as per bold sections) which is fair enough. If you look at what mobile devices can do nowadays it's pretty impressive what they fit into such a small device. Future tech is just going to get better and better.

So practically he was referencing Google Glass. No VR for mobile phones yet.

VR will come to next gen consoles, just PC and PC based consoles like Steam Machine will have much better support. I think we will see full blown VR support for next-next gen consoles after 5 years.

I can see the issue with consoles. Games are designed to run at 60FPS if you're lucky, and 60FPS @ 1080p if you're really lucky, and that's not even '3D' yet. You'd essentially need a specific OR build of the game to get it working with consoles. PC people can just spend a grand or so on graphics cards if they really want something like Battlefield 4 working for OR.
