down
since this latest version has dropped i seem to have the bad luck of wasting a lot of time with ctd's and server disconnects, long delays on voice comms
and infinite loading ship of spinnyness.
i havnt been on for a few weeks and just came on 20 mins ago, didnt last long waste of time !

New to the game and really enjoying it. I have just taken about 4 missions for a good amount of money (for me anyway!), because they seem so far and few between.

If the server crashes does that mean the game timers stop, or does the clock keep counting down? If so I may be in big trouble with fines!

Multiple ways.
ESO is completely free to play, but those who decided to subscribe get benefits from it; like, for example, we don't pay for DLC's (expansions everyone pays for); plus we get crowns per month that lets us buy things on the in-game shop. Star Wars: The Old Republic does the same; but they limit the F2P players quite a bit (I don't agree with that at all).

You do know that ESO have a very similar instancing issue and design as ED has.... the only difference is that ED have the P2P for the local instance.

Took quite a while for ESO to fix their instancing issues.

Then all the fun to be had while waiting for a spot to login to the busy PvP servers. Have they fixed the repeating performance issue on the PvP servers that made every actions take minutes to complete, everyone just ran around trying todo stuff and then 10+ minutes later half the people died and the was happy to be alive....

IT HAS dedicated Server's. And they scale on the hour average load.
What FDev was unprepared for was teh scale of players jumping at once. Its the Transaction/Adjucation servers that are handling it. each jump makes a few ajax calls to a php backend which in turn handles the db requests which decide if players get grouped together in instances and try to balance them. You can think of it as matchmaking in a way but also more. Once players are grouped p2p comes in place for all "realtime" stuff in an instance. The problem with alot of players in an instance jumping together to a known location the Adjucation servers attempting to group the people togetehr based off wing/friends/fleet criteria against eachother player that was in the instace. This creates an ENORMOUS queryload and each request takes longer per server. If then some time out and get set back to their last savestate ( mysql-db ) and try to log in again the adjucation servers again try to group them with their friends while alot of people are still jumping or in the area. So it again may lead to a timeout -theres a point where you cant throw much more cpu's at it in time without hitting some sort of a bottleneck. The Architecture scales but it cannot handle 10% load -> 10000% load within 10 minutes. Server scale was usually over a 4hr average now its like 1hr. Its a balance act.

Developer & Serveradmin - NOT employed by Fdev btw.

Cheers!

Well they should have known. This event was announced more than a YEAR ago. I think the 1st posts about such an event dated back to almost TWO YEARS. They had plenty of time to realize the scales involved. They have almost NO excuse IMO.
What they could have done is come into private contact with the Lead Organizers (Erimus & DR Kaii) and explain to them that the event would probably need some adjustment due to the scale of it.

For example they could have set a limit to the number of CMDRs that could participate. What kind of expedition is this that involves tens of thousands of people? Have you heard any real life expeditions to Antarctica or Mt Everest or Sahara Desert crossing that participate 10000+ explorers? Where is the sense of realism / lore behind such an event? Or is it not a scientific expedition after all?

Or if this was not possible or not wanted and they were willing to let the number of CMDRs to grow to the current one, then they could have spread the launch event over a period of 1-2 weeks or even a month. Every day at different UTCs (which would also help with the different Time Zones every one of us is living) there would be a launch of much much smaller groups (a few tens of CMDRs per group).
That way the server load would have been evenly distributed.

I am not participating in DW2 btw and never considered due to real life commitments and other things.

Just my 2 cents..

down again, will go down 4 more times before midnightim sure

On the bright side, I get off work at midnight game time (5pm here), and it's been very stable for me after those hours. I wouldn't even know there's been issues if not for the forums.

Here's to hoping tomorrow brings some fixes with a patch.

Second time for me today, fourth time this week. Been playing since day 1 and never had this many issues with connectivity.

Am wondering if this is some underhanded way of Fdev trying to tell me to spend my time and money on other games for a change... keep it up and it might just work!
