Sound familiar?

Player 1: Man, there's nothing to do in Elite. It's a mile wide and an inch deep.

Player 2: What about trading?

Player 1: I don't want to do that.

Player 2: Rares?

Player 1: I don't want to do that.

Player 2: Community goals?

Player 1: I don't want to do those.

Player 2: Powerplay?

Player 1: I don't want to do that.

Player 2: Assassination missions?

Player 1: I don't want to do that.

Player 2: Smuggling?

Player 1: I don't want to do that.

Player 2: Planetary landings?

Player 1: I don't want to do that.

Player 2: Exploration?

Player 1: I don't want to do that.

Player 2: Mining?

Player 1: I don't want to do that.

Player 2: Bounty hunting?

Player 1: I don't want to do that.

Player 2: Object recovery and salvage?

Player 1: I don't want to do that.

Player 2: Be a fuel rat and rescue ships?

Player 1: I don't want to do that.

Player 2: Piracy?

Player 1: I don't want to do that.

Player 2: There's always PVP...

Player 1: Yeah, I love that, but I can't find anyone.

Player 2: You play in solo.

Player 1: Yeah, because Frontier doesn't make Open attractive enough. There's nothing to do in the game and the payouts suck.

Player 2: All right, see you later.

Player 1: Where are you going?

Player 2: Home to play Elite. I'm gonna go bounty hunting, smuggling, PVP, doing a CG, a few assassination missions, rares trading, check out some USS/WSS/Distress beacons, salvage some wreckage, a little piracy, etc. I usually make a million or two. Not sure what I'll do after that, but I'll find something. See ya.

(slam)

Player 1: Fan boy.

Free reps to everyone who post before me here!

But wait dragon!, You forgot 'smuggling, trading, bounty hunting and everything in this game is just the same thing. You fly from station to station, sometimes shooting things and clicking on buttons at the station!'.

That's the very definition of a mile wide an inch deep, the incorrect statement is there is 'nothing' to do.

There are plenty of things to do, but each of them are perceivable of not being very deep. Some players are able to utilise a sense of reason for each of the activities. But for a lot of players on the surface they don't really offer much opportunity.

One example, if a player chooses to become a bounty hunter and spends 5 hours a day in a RES they will declare it shallow, if another player becomes a BH, but has was been RP working for a single faction and has chosen to try to rid the system of pirates they will perceive depth.

Then there is depth and there isn't depth at the same time. Such a product of eastern philosophy Elite: Dangerous is.

(But you are right) :D

Curiously, this game's 'toxic' forums are actually fairly civilized over all. I can go to pretty much any other gaming forum out there and see some actual nastiness. You lot are all cute puppies in comparison :)

OP would make for good corporate PR manager

List of shallow gameplay elements designed to work at absolutely minimal functional level does not automagically make any of them, or the game as whole, 'deep'.
