Never in the history of sci-fi has so much been owed by so many to so few a collection of art books. ;)
If I had to pick just one artist,...I guess it would be Chris Foss, but as he went on to design my most favorite ship ever, The Nostromo, its not very surprising, to me at least. :)

Not strictly always sci-fi, but for me Luis Royo is the great. I won't link anything of his here for reasons which will be obvious to those who know about his stuff. But do a google image search if you're over 18 and not at work.

H.R. Giger was awesome as well. He designed the aliens from the Alien franchise. RIP to the genius but hella creepy artist.

Oh yeah, Moebius, really great depth of field artist, with huge skies.
He spent time in the desert in the US, and it had a profound impression on his sense of scale. All his scenery is fantastically good.

I thought it was in Mexico, and the guy did hallucinogenic drugs there which had a profound influence on him and his imagination :)

That ship at 2:20 in the second video looks like an imperial clipper/cutter :D

Actually I've always believed it might have inspired David when he sat down to design the orginal Imperial Courier. Although the present one in Elite looks nice and all I will always prefer the original model. :)

And the rework by Gernot Schrader (this Swiss/German guy is still looking for work by the way for any that are interested ;) ) that was once available in the free Space Sim Pioneer long ago and still is in the latest FFE3D build..

While searching for a post I made yesterday I stumbled upon this thread and thought you guys might appreciate my book cover tributes to Chris Foss that were inspired by the new paintjob I just applied to my T6 ("The Pug That Snored" - named after Cmdr Codgers brilliant video series). The first one was taken during a Fuel Rat rescue op and the second was taken on a trip to the Spirograph nebula.

I've always been a sucker for space art, and always wanted to become a space oriented artist one day..but the idea extends to every art, could call it universe art.

I already saw these over at the screenies thread, I love the Chris Foss-iness of your Pug (and very strong Homeworld vibes of course too! Looks like something fresh out of the Hiigaran mothership)...now make another with a more vibrant background and bright frontal lighting and you are golden :p

As for my favourite space artist?

Me, of course! :D

Not really actually, I'd like to call mine "space art" but I'm really just little more than an editor/composer, since I can't draw stuff ...basic nightside Earth render is not mine (couldn't find the source to credit), tiny spaceships belong to Kubrick, moon cities belong to...Putin, I guess.

To be more serious about real space artist, can't name a favourite one in particular, but I definitely love all things from 60's-70's-early 80's, they have this "je ne sais quoi" for me that is most probably related to sweet childhood memories.
