Space combat is now unplayable

I've stuck with this from the initial release of Odyssey, having preordered it. But with patch 9.01, space combat is completely unplayable.
Eg. in a haz res site, you literally have no idea who is shooting at you if you take on a wing. In a team, if your teammate attacks someone, you have no idea who is attacking you.
It's completely unplayable. It defeats the purpose of the game. I know it's Elite "Dangerous" but this is Elite "Impossible".

What baffles me is how this got past any sort of regression testing??? Fly into any area (on a planet surface, nav beacon, resource site, literally anywhere out of supercruise), target a ship. Attack it.

Furthermore some of the ships that you are attacking seem unable to recognise you as hostile and dumbly wait to be blown up. It's been like that for years for ships that are going to hyperspace away when you attack them (they never enter hyperspace and wait for you to blow them up, dumbly) but this is an entirely new level of absurdity.

Could FDev perhaps start littering their code with assert(false) when they come across things that should work fundamentally but do not.

Honestly completely baffled and quite disgusted/disappointed/flabbergasted.

Thanks. I saw the mention by the devs that it may or may not make it into another patch and may have to wait until patch 10, which is truly utterly bonkers.
I'll add to that ticket, thanks.

I don't understand why I need to vote on a ticket that is a fundamental behaviour that we saw on the BBC Micro in 1984 but there we go...

What's next? Stars all disappear and we need to upvote a ticket to get them back?! Crackers.

It seems to me that since so many problems have arisen with update 9 and the company isn't sure when they'll be able to fix them, why not just roll it back to update 8? At least everything worked then; maybe we can wait to have the Scorpion and the other things in the update until they can iron out the other problems.

Yea I agree with you. There's another thread about the exobio scanner not working and people, rightfully, have the exact same reaction as you - why do we have to vote to fix what are pretty basic and important gameplay issues? I don't know - maybe we don't have to, but are you going to take the risk?

Why don't they just open source it and save themselves the agro! Then we can all dissect the code whilst holding our chins, nodding and tutting, as appropriate.

Musta missed something … been out mining bio sites … what’s broken? They deleted the radar or somat?

Ships attacking you won't appear as red/flashing on the radar until you attack them first.

Which makes attacking wings & bounty hunting in a wing literally unplayable.

I was farming engineering mats from a haz-rez this morning. Wiped out plenty of wings. Just killed anything "Wanted" and, occasionally, had to look out the windows with my MK I Eyeballs to trace some incoming fire to a target. Mildly inconvenient occasionally, yes. Unplayable, no.

Frontier and Elite have a mountain of problems and a great deal of trust to rebuild with how much of a let-down Odyssey was, but flooding the zone with hyperbole about game-breaking bugs that are not in fact game-breaking could potentially numb the impact of hair-on-fire posts when something major does need attention.

Also, a good combat pilot has to be ready to work around systems failure that could crop up at any time. Consider it an opportunity to get good while they fix it. You're the commander of a vessel with a broken IFF system. How do you adapt? Do you active night-vision to give you better visuals? Do you make sure the binds on your Free Camera are set up correctly so that you can use it as an observation drone in a pinch? Do you learn to boost away and use FA-off to come about and fly in reverse, thereby putting most potential aggressors under your crosshairs?

Adapt, commander.

And how am I meant to see out of my Viper IV window? The visibility is very poor. That's what I was using. I can't look above me in the Viper like the Krait.

I buy a new ship!
Or park that ship on the fleet carrier until it gets fixed.

Hehe, I like this. It could even be made in to a "feature". Someone else one here suggested that if you could walk around your ship interior, there could be various switches or panels that you could interact with for minor/temporary tweaks or fixes.E.g. a temporary extra pip in the distributor, reroute power to the FSD for a slight jump or speed increase, bring the hyperdrive back online after a bad neutron jump, etc.

"Damnit Chewy, the IFF is offline! Take control of the turrets while I run back and try to override the targeting reticulator!".

Meh, wishful thinking for Update 5384 perhaps.

All that aside, the guy shooting you is (probably) going to be the closest radar contact with its hardpoints deployed. You can tell they have guns drawn when they are triangles instead of squares.

You don't have to vote! These things have already been posted in the news forum as things that are going to be fixed ASAP. Voting on them does nothing because they are already working on it, it doesn't make them work faster.

Hostile impacts show up on your own ship hologram (right of the scanner), use that to guestimate who's shooting you. If you don't see anything, the shooter is somewhere underneath you.
Or boost, FA off flip and figure out who's following you.

On the other hand, it doesn't hurt.
