Space elevators and Dyson Spheres

Space Elevators!

Did I just see a space elevator! I did didn't I?

Woooooo!

Arena combat...might be fun. But...

Space Elevators!!!

Srsly...this does flesh out the universe a tad and does include the planets in the equation more fully.

Well Done.

Soon please...pleaaase!

Just finished posting in the trailer discussion then found this thread, whoops.

Not sure if this has been discussed yet, but is that a space elevator that I spy as part of that new station?

On second thoughts, the long structure it has descending towards the planet doesn't continue on the "space bound side" of the station.
It would probably need to continue further than the altitude shown, the designs I've seen have a counterweight out passed geostationary orbit.

Though having said that the planet depicted in the trailer will probably have different height requirements for an elevator, than the ones for an Earth based elevator.

Also is it a good idea to have people firing weapons near an elevator, imagine if someone were to destabilize it

Yep I was impress that we are getting elevators as well.

Wonder if elevators can arrive before the rest of the CQC.

An this elite dangerous space elevator.

I am not really thrilled about the idea of the game becoming more PvP centered, but the new station design looks cool and is very welcome!

why to avoid planetary landings? they r crucial for this game :)

if they were crucial, they would have been in the game from the start. So it's obviously not crucial.

If i wanted to get around player's ships blowing up on re-entry because they went a little too fast or be forced to make them completely unrealistic so that they're safe due to the flood of complaints from players who dont want the game to be difficult i'd be left with space elevators to provide a means to the planet. It's easy, allows for the loading of a new environment and textures in the game (similar to moving system to system) and creates less gameplay logic holes / issues.

I understand it existed in earlier games, but it seems unlikely to make much sense in this game. Especially when you'll want to visit a city and it can be 10's of thousands of miles away and you can't fly at supercruise speeds in atmo. It's just cleaner to use space elevators so i could totally see FD go that route.

Finally !!!

An uplifting thread...

Yeah about time, hopefully we can get this to rise above the free-falling threads.

I for one hope to see seamless atmospheric flight in the future. Would be a shame if they were to do flying and limit it to populated worlds.

Space elevators make perfect sense. Once they are built a damn sight more efficient than a fleet of atmosphere to orbit shuttles and freighters.

Why would it stop planetary landings as a play mechanic?

My guess is planetary landings on unpopulated or low density planets would be fine, but on high population planets just like flying a Cessna around London....can't park it just anywhere, can't really fly it just anywhere either!

Planetary ATC would blast any errant ships out of the sky for trespassing...so handwaviumly stop it from landing in densely populated areas as the potential for destruction would be immense. Doesn't mean that sneaky sneaky might not happen.

I'm fine with it...space elvators in high density, planetary landing in low. Makes sense.

O 'ang on....maybe it's a disused space elevator. Good for tooling around shooting stuff up in an Eagle...hmmmmm.

Please let there be space elevators!

I still find it eerie watching that clip, seeing the cable rise up and not fall down due to snapping at the bottom.

Wouldn't want to be on that station when it does though.
Imagine the world is a burly Scots guy, the teather and station the hammer. What happens when he lets go?

Well first it would probably play havoc with a few satellites if they were unlucky and then it might get thrown onto an ejection trajectory, or get tangled round a planets moon if it had one.

That's one of the problems with building one for real, how to avoid complete carnage for a satellite network even when it is stable.
