SpaceMouse

Good morning CMDRs,

I have recently started using a 3DConnexion SpaceMouse Pro at work and it got me thinking if it could be used for a game like Elite. Being a PS4 Elite player myself I do not have the opportunity to try however, has anyone used a SpaceMouse or something similar to play Elite? I'd be interested to hear how you got on.

SpaceMouse sounds like it should be an amazing Saturday morning cartoon show :)

(Sorry OP, no idea what you mean - just liked the idea of SpaceMouse)

It's a type of professional mouse, as I understand it. Very expensive too.

If you'll allow me.... Yes the spacemouse is a special 6DOF mouse for navigating 3d cad, and from personal experience I can confirm it works with Elite. The reason it does that is that the 3dconnexxion software also runs a virtual joystick enumerator device parsing the mouse movements into 6 axis on a virtual joystick. So if you go into elite and go through the bindings routine it will see the virtual joystick and it does work, and work well. This isn't repeating stuff from reddit or suchlike, this is based on personal experience as I have one of them for work, and for the lols of it I hooked it up with a set of bindings for Elite, and its surprisingly intuitive, but I found the lack of buttons a pain so went back to my dualsticks. There is a couple of videos on youtube showing someone elses experiments with this as a controller.

Spacemouse, Spacemouse
I am a sort of wondermouse
A hit, a miss, A blundermouse
Spacemouse, that’s me
I am a mouse called Spacemouse
A mouse with guts and nerve
I get past Spacecats so easily
with my famous body swerve

Hmmmmm...... I don't know why I call him Gerald.

ED with a 3D Mouse? Pshh The real pros play ED with a Wacom Intuos! :D

Joking aside, I think it'd be a pain to fly around with one, but it'd be handy for landing.

I use a Space Pilot Pro and a Space Navigator (on different machines), and wouldn't ever go back to a throttle.

For thruster control, there's nothing like it - it's really intuitive. It's especially useful for flight-assist off, where you don't really have need for a throttle - once you start moving, you're not going to stop unless you counterthrust.

Basically, I use it on my left hand to control thrusters. The buttons are assigned to throttle, distro pips, FSD and boost. I use a joystick on my right hand to control rotation, shoot, navigate menus and so on.

No idea about The Spacemouse.
But I have one of these, just cant figure out how to best use it, considering I use a Hotas T1600m FCS and keyboard atm. (plus im running out of usb ports :( )

Pip macros, docking request macros, commonly used keys in a convenient place, steering the SRV.

I actually used to have one for 3D model work. It's a shame more support wasn't given for it.

I've since moved on from 3D stuff but it's definitely a very useful tool, especially for 6 DOF functionality- which this game supports in terms of ship movement.

The 3DConnexion devices are designed and built so that you can't use the rotation axes at the same time as the translation axes - using one locks the other.
