Squadrons and system colonization mechanics

Hello commanders

I have just spent a few days playing x4 foundations and that game even more convinced me that colonization mechanics would be great in Elite Dangerous. Now I know they are two different games with two different agendas but what x4 foundations made me realize is the feeling of meaningful interaction with the games environment. As of now the only investment we as players have is our ships we work to engineer them and we work to create a fleet of ships that fit our play style. But that falls short of giving us the players a true meaning interactions with the games environments. Now I know many are going to say that is what Power Play is for but in my so humble opinion Power Play falls short because you are only moving the flags around not planting a new flag in fresh soil.
Now I would like to point out I am not talking about any type of ownership what I am talking about is the feeling of working together towards building a new system out of a unpopulated system. Given those who participate in that a feeling of accomplishment. Now like I said earlier this can be done in many ways. That being said I feel that it is most logical next step for elite dangerous.

What I would like to see is that the community and developers discuss how best to approach colonization mechanics.

There might be a point in saying the own fleet is a tangible and measurable indicator of investment in the game world, next to credits. But declaring it as the only meaningful one might be a bit unimaginative. There are many other goals to work towards, even not explicitely encouriged ones. Most are just not fixed after accomplishment. I don't think Powerplay needs a larger battlefield. If we compare it to Risk or most other board games, the map is not getting bigger there either. Besides there is already a mechanic to discourage expansion in undeveloped areas, even if it would be unopposed.

Which of the multiple Squadrons that can affiliate with a Faction would drive the expansion?

Personally, I think it should happen at the minor faction level, rather than the squadron level: if a faction has, say, already expanded five times, or maybe if it controls at least one asset in five separate systems, then the next time it Expands, it enters Colonization state, after which a new colony out on the edge of the Bubble is founded. The new colony has the expanding faction plus one other faction randomly selected from the expanding faction's system. After five more successful regular expansions, it then founds another colony, not far from the first one (or perhaps a second colony-base in their original colony star-system).

"Colony" as the system economy or a new colony of the expanding systems type in a suitable system? Because if there would only be new "Colony"-systems on the edges, they would demand a lot more attention then more self-sustaining economies. It would be problematic in the grand scheme too. Should unsustainable or unsupported systems be evacuated after some time?

There is a general lack of missions delivering information or resources to the same faction in another system in my experience. Sure, there is a certain amount of " simulated" traffic, but if the faction is paying a premium for a trusted Cmdr to deliver something to a potential enemy, why not for essential resources to certain friends?

I would like to see two new stats added to minor factions.
1-“Net Worth” the some total of all assets owned by the minor faction
2-“ Capital improvement Currency” or CIC how much a minor faction can afford to invest in its colonization efforts.

Useful for coordinated efforts, but the naming of 2 seems to imply that colonising is the logical end goal of every faction, while conquering existing (and basically invulnerable) infrastructure seems more economical.

As a fully paid up member of the Vicktore Beskor fan club, I wholeheartedly and unconditionally agree with my glorious Sky Marshal's idea.

Some other ideas I have is that some of the criteria for colonization should consider where a minor factions HQ is. Take the EDF as an example Okinura is in the heart of the bubble 32 light years away from Sol it should cost us more to colonized a unpopulated system because those systems should come at a premium. Where in a minor faction at the edge of the bubble should have a smaller cost because of less competition for colonization rites and minor factions on the edge of the bubble should be encouraged to colonize new unpopulated systems

My next prediction is players being able to effect the population of a system so that a Star system can be de-colonized. Essentially killing the system from the inside out.

that would give players the opportunity to have true PVP wars over territory and that my friends would be very cool
I'd be careful what you wish for with this one. Didn't Hutton Truckers spank EDF into oblivion several times?

The Truckers and the EDF have been good neighbors for years we have worked together multiple times helping with each others BGS. We have been the example on how two different groups can work together to create a safe and stable community within the bubble
