Squadrons & Crossplay

Dear All & Devs,

I was wondering if by any chance we will get some kind of cross-play.
Pc --> Xbox and PC ---> Ps4
Even it it means Ps4 and Xbox can't group up or read each others chat as Sony is pretty difficult on this subject.
Got several friends that bought the game on ps4 and with the Squadron feature coming up in the future we were hoping to get together in the game.:D

I also read in an Q&A about this: https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDange...e_charity_livestream/?st=ixrxxcun&sh=99712ab9
While it was not promised this would be a big step up for the game and be a big selling point as well.

If anyone would know more feel to let us know.

I thank you all and wish you a wonderful day.

I think the fact that crossplay was not mentioned at all in the preview for 2018 means it’s not happening in 2018.

From what I have seen Microsoft and Sony are dancing round the subject, I believe Minecraft non java version will be crossplay between Xbox, PC and Nintendo switch (The Better Together update) so if that pans out well and Sony and Microsoft stop snarking at each other maybe the barriers to this occurring will drop.

The factors to allow this are out of Frontiers hands, so homogenising open and Private Groups into one big common family can only start once the consoles settle their differences.

I wouldn't say that's completely true, Samarco said that the stuff they were mentioning at the expo were not the only features being added, there is lots more to come bundled with those updates.

The question by the OP was about crossplay, based on the evidence to date where Minecraft has partial crossplay, I would say save your money betting on crossplay appearing in 2018 for Elite Dangerous.

I would also reiterate the barriers to crossplay are within the control product holders of the Xbox and a Playstation arena, not Frontier.

I had a chat about crossplay at the Expo with Steve Kirby. Crossplay is not in the hands of developers, it's completely in the hands of Sony and Microsoft, and subordinated to their economic interests. It would require the whole system to be revised (no more PSN and XboxLive but a common protocol for everyone) for cross-play to be a reality for all games. It's something that -- if it will ever happen -- it's definitely not imminent and, again, not for FDev (or any other software house) to decide.

Given that ARK Survival Evolved and Rocket League developers have both gone on record to say that they have everything internally in place for Crossplay but don't actually have it because of Microsoft and Sony disagreements, I imagine until they come to some sort of agreement, it definitely won't happen for ED.

Without mentioning specific timeframes, I would say;
Step 1. SONY and MS come to an agreement on Crossplay
Step 2. Some games like Rocket League, ARK, PUBG, and more, activate Crossplay.
3. ED gets crossplay.

I can't imagine it any other way. There are devs that have said, "Yeah we can do it but Sony won't let us" like with Minecraft, while FD has taken more of a "We have no plans to include Crossplay at this time" which gives me the impression that certain things required for Crossplay are not in place yet and probably won't even start to be developed by FD until they know for certain they can do it without Sony or Microsoft saying no.

It all depends on how it's implemented. Although I'm fairly certain that ps4, xbox, and pc won't be able to physically fly together in the same instance, it doesn't necessarily mean they can't work together in squadrons in a way. The thing is, even right now, xbox and ps4 players all influence the same persistent universe, so they can all work together to push the same faction for example. At the moment though, all coordination has to be done outside of the game. But with the squadrons update I could see it being possible to communicate cross platform at the very least through some kind of squadron message board. Since we really don't know anything about squadrons, it's really impossible to say what they will do. I'm just saying though, that the way ED is set up, some kind of cross platform organization is might be possible.

Thank you all for your input.
While I still believe it would be a great feature to have in the game as it would really be a massive shared galaxy.
I do hope that it would ever happen, in the meanwhile I have a lot to learn still about the game myself :)

thx again all :)
