Squadrons vs wings?

I have a stupid question: In simple terms even a clueless boob such as I can understand, what's the difference between squadrons and wings? What is it that can be done with one and not the other? I haven't partaken in either, so excuse my ignorance.

Squadrons have little to nothing to do with wings. To put it in different terms, Wings are a party, Squadrons are a guild.

Im sure someone will call me in with a more comprehensive explanation shortly.

No that's a pretty good simplification of it. It's backwards from reality (shocker [haha]) where a wing is made up of squadrons. But basically, a wing in-game is up to 4 people, a squadron has a much higher limit (no clue what it is in-game). Wings in-game are ad hoc and made up on the spot, while Squadrons are more permanent constructs for organization.

Wingmates show up along the top of your hud with name, shield/hull status, and location if wing beacon is enabled. Wings are for realtime combat ops. You can wing-up with anyone. Navlock on a wingmate. See them on your radar in supercruise and normal space (blue icons). Short term membership. Its easy to leave the wing, "leave wing" option or relog.

Squadrons are for more galaxy wide ops and we can chat, see each other in super cruise and normal space (grean icons). Squadrons are more long term membership and you don't get dropped by relog.

Okay, thanks. But still slightly confused. INARA has had lists of wings for ages where members ran into hundreds. Just looked now and I see its been renamed to squadrons. Which is one reason I assumed they're much the same thing by a different name.
