Horizons SRV Controls

Hi,

So I've bought horizons, equiped my ship with a hangar and buggy and set of to the nearest moon to try it out, I deployed the SRV and ...

... nothing happened, I cannot move it or do anything.

I use the keyboard to control my ship and am quite happy with that, and though I could do the same with the SRV.

When I look at the controls bindings, it appears as if all the controls for the SRV are blank.

I mapped two keys for accelerate and decelerate, and can now move back and forward, but nothing more.

I plugged in my XBox controller, and still nothing (its working on other software apps).

So do I really have to set up all the controls for the SRV manually? I really don't want to have to do this as theres loads of controls most of which I'm unsure about.

Is there no default?

Damn....

I'm happy using the keyboard, and generally woudl prefer to stick to that - I've read on a few websites that the keyboard isn't great for the SRV - is that the case?

I've an Xbox controller, I could use the SRV for that??

Is it worth persevering with the keyboard?

I have a mate who uses keyboard and mouse and says it is fine so yes, use what u are used to like drangonknight said

Well happy I have stumbled upon this thread.
Have owned Horizons since its release but have never tried the SRV - one reason being that, at casual glance, the control set-up looks bewildering.

Personal preference is stick for flying and keyboard/mouse for ground movement. Quick searches made it sound like using and setting up kb/m for the SRV was difficult at best.

So I am glad to see it can be done.

Yes I'm a keyboard mouse user and yes it's awkward to begin with, but I found that by binding roll to mouse *in addition* to left and right I can control its angle of attack when hovering or falling, this helps preserve th SRV as on long drops you can level out and suicide burn to cushion the impact

Hint in advance: drive assist is initially a more subtle difference than flight assist on your ship (by a large margin), but the majority of players that try both turn drive assist off for ease. It seems to do a fantastic job of making your SRV skid out and then do really stupid wobbling back and forth as you try to get it moving in the right direction again.

The keyboard is the it gives you a digital input meaning off/on and while this works an analog signal such as a joystick axis gives you more control. The SRV is very twitchy at or near full speed. On ice planets and moons you can really slide around a bit. And while this can be fun (think drifting cars) it can get frustrating if you are trying to run full speed anywhere and you hit rocks or bumps and end up constantly spinning out of control. I use a keyboard to drive buggies, motor bikes and other vehicles in Battlefield 4 but the SRV is way to sensitive to sliding out of control at top speed.

I found the best way to drive the SRV is to use an analog axis. For quite a while I used the twist axis on my joystick and it worked well. Then I got a set of inexpensive rudder pedal and WOW, so much more control. The longer axis is the key here and it more slowly and precisely inputs the direction change than twist axis of the joystick. I use the throttle of my T-Flight Hotas X to control speed. Anytime you start to enter a spin, immediately pull back the throttle to reduce the spin and regain control.

All that being said, driving the SRV is a blast! Drifting and boosting along like some Dukes of Hazzard running Onion Head instead of whisky and jumping down off cliffs it is generally great fun.

In my opinion, running this game from a keyboard and mouse kills it and with the T-Flight Hotas X price being so low there are few excuses not to by a decent Hotas. I've had the T-Flight for a few years and have used it for other games so it has paid for it's self nicely by now and I can recommend it highly. With 433 hours of Elite over the last year and a half I can say it has added to my enjoyment. I have preordered The new T.16000M FCS HOTAS from Thrustmaster because of the extra buttons on the throttle and the fact the throttle isn't connected to the joystick. I' really looking forward to using this setup.
