Hey all, another idea/discussion for you all!
Currently, we only have 1 surface vehicle.
FD said we won't be getting more for some time. And I can understand why, the SRV looks incredibly complicated!
The SRV, while useful, is lacking in all areas.
It's either too slow, can't carry enough, not powerful enough, too weak... etc
So...
SRV outfitting
What if SRV outfitting was much more like the original Elite and FE2, where you had a limited overall tonnage, but can outfit it more freely?
It'd obviously need its own selection of micro-modules, like engines, power plants, power distributors, sensors, weapons, utilities, cargo holds, and shields, etc etc, various grades, all with their own tonnage.
The turret would be split in to two separate hardpoints. So you can just equip 1 small weapon if needed. Or two different weapons.
The only difference is, instead of have a power plant slot, engines slot, etc.
You unlimited slots, and whenever you add a module, it deducts the mass of that module from the total available. When you hit zero, you can't add anymore. Of course you must install the core modules before you can install it on your ship.
So, if you want a cargo carrying SRV, drop the weapons, utilities, shields, put on a small engine and power plant, etc, and fill the rest with cargo racks. Slow, heavy, but full of cargo.
If you want to go Goliath hunting, load up on shields, and good weapons. Even load up a an SRV sized guided missile launcher and rail gun independently for added omph!
Slow, but strong and powerful.
Or if you want a fast racing SRV, fit the biggest engine, and nothing else except the core modules.
Extremely fast, but very weak.
Thoughts?
