Newcomer / Intro SRV turret mode

I've just begun messing around with SRVs. It's a new element to the game and a lot of fun.

When I need to shoot an object, I can often do it from the "driver's seat" but I can certainly appreciate why going into the turret mode would be useful. Thing is, I can't seem to fire the weapon using my "normal" FIRE button when "up there." Pitch,Yaw, etc all seem to work fine with the expected controller motions. I've been looking over the control settings in-game and even pored over the bindings file but haven't found anything obvious. I tried using a few other buttons (kind of a random attempt) to see if the weapon fires - to no avail

Does the weapon fire only when targeted? This isn't true when in the driver's seat. I've often fired off a few shots at nothing in particular while cruising along.

I'm still experimenting to try to figure this out, but I thought I'd ask in case someone has experienced this. I still have to figure out how to target (and a couple of other operations) while in the turret. I expect to use the same controls...

There is a certain wonkiness to SRV's fire control.
Make sure you have your primary and secondary trigger bound properly, because I know you can for example bind a scanner directly to a trigger (instead of binding the trigger button as a trigger and then assigning the scanner to the trigger in firegroups) which makes things break sometimes.

My first suspicion, though, would be that you simply don't have any pips in WEP capacitor.
Normally you should be able to fire your guns even without a target.

Also re: targeting - you can only use "Target ahead" binding in the SRV (Or target manually from the Contacts screen on the left-hand panel.

I am chalking this up to just that. Your suggestions about pips, etc. are good ones, but they weren't the problem. I had already checked. When I went back to the game on the next day, it worked fine. The other operations I mentioned work as expected; I tried them too (targeting, etc).
Thanks for the guidance about the pitfalls of binding. I was pretty confident that the bindings were (are) very straighforward and sensible but I'll take another look to be sure.

I can't quite explain it, but that's ok.

I have to take some time to practice using the weapon in the turret because I feel like I'm far too used to operating it in the driver's position.
Thanks for taking some time to help!

Indeed.
I've also noted somewhat intermittent cooperation with the key that's assigned to the boost function. When I begin a run in my SRV it won't work, only to begin working much later in the journey because of who-knows-what, or if I happen to dock the SRV and release it again.

... because boost & turret are disabled when you are near your ship maybe?

Oh, NOW I know what it may be!
The boost (and the turret as well) doesn't work when you are close to your ship. That is because the SRV retracts the turret and the booster thrusters in preparation for being docked.
I don't know the exact radius but I think it's a couple hundred meters.

I thought of that too.
It is true that the two functions don't operate while close to the ship but that's not the problem here. I've had (in particular) boost fail both right as I begin my "expedition" (but not close to the ship) and long after I have begun - far afield. This is long after the ship has left the surface or is close enough to lock out the fire and boost functions.
The game usually issues a message if you try to use those functions close to the ship.

I live with it. If I have to cruise around without being able to boost, I adjust my behavior. If I can't fire, I end up restarting.

Thanks for the suggestions - as always!

Being able to boost vertically requires energy in the Eng pips and you usually have to hold the button down. The longer you hold it down the more it boosts.

If you're having multiple problems you could consider selling the SRV and the hanger, restarting the game and buying them back.
It might fix something.
