SRV Vertical Thrusters

Just watched a video of someone hooning around a planet in an SRV then it took off - I mean what the actual F?? When was this introduced?

Checked controls and under Vertical Thrusters there's just Button Mode which you can change from Hold to Toggle (makes no difference what is set). No mention of what button is bound nor any option to bind a key!

Assist off and on, no difference.

Must be something stupid I'm missing here - keyboard user - How can this be setup please?

One of the first things I discovered when I used an SRV was that it has a limited ability to jump, that is enhanced or reduced by a planet's gravity, by pressing and holding spacebar to use its vertical thrusters.

Also handy for breaking your fall if you happen to be falling for some reason and don't fancy hull damage.

The binding is called "Vertical Thrusters" under the "Driving" controls I believe. A few things to remember. First put 4 pips to ENG (don't bother about pips to SYS unless you're in a combat situation, shields do nothing against SRV terrain collision damage). Second, the gravity of the planet you're on has an enormous affect on how far up you can boost. If you fast forward the following video to around the 8:30 mark you'll see an example of what a shortish burst on those vertical thrusters can do.

I "hoon" around on planets a LOT (I've even done a complete circumnavigation of a smallish moon) so if you have any questions about SRV handling ask away (I've got hundeds of videos too!).

Just tried the space bar, nothing. Under controls what needs to be set where please? Nothing looks out of the ordinary and nothing screams at you - bind this key for this action.

You say "limited" but in fact, on low-G worlds I'll generally spend far more time in the air than on the ground ..

It's MUCH faster, there's far less risk of spinning out all the time and you can bound across REALLY bumpy terrain with relative ease.

key bind?

Well I use a HOTAS so I've got thrust bound to the same button I'd use for "Up" vertical thrust in my ship. I forget what the default key bind for this is but if you go into settings and controls and scroll down to that Driving section you should be able to see and/or change it.

Ah, the option to bind is made visible when clicking to the right of the words Vertical Thrust - silly me looking for it in the options below it when expanding that section. Oh and Button Mode to toggle :-D
