One of my biggest bugbears when it comes to immersion-whiners discussing any form of speculative fiction is when they bust out "realism" as some sort of totem for why people in the future / narnia / tamriel / whatever shouldn't be allowed to do anything whimsical or silly whatsoever. At least FDev gave the matter the concern that it was due.
I mean really. Silliness? In a video game? I am appalled.
Nor for being too thick for words..One of my biggest bugbears when it comes to immersion-whiners discussing any form of speculative fiction is when they bust out "realism" as some sort of totem for why people in the future / narnia / tamriel / whatever shouldn't be allowed to do anything whimsical or silly whatsoever.
Because of course real people in the real world are 100% serious and rational at all times and would never do something silly for fun.
Of course we are! How dare you think otherwise! (I'd love to publish the video of my friend whooshing down a zip wire slide in a local park - but it has her face on and the age limit was 14, not 60+)Because of course real people in the real world are 100% serious and rational at all times and would never do something silly for fun.
The best example I've seen of scifi dorks insisting that fun won't exist in the future was the baystation developer who argued that it was unrealistic that super serious spacemen in the super serious future would put a hat on the station's mascot, therefore the mascot shouldn't have a head inventory slot.Of course we are! Because it's inconceivable and illogical that a human being would see fit to put a hat on a dog.
