Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Y'all seriously making me tear up today. Gonna go hug the wife now.
Hope you don't mind me posting your interesting comments from SA:

well boy howdy and hello
  • "server meshing" in its original form is scrapped completely as of Q4 2020
  • "no possible way to make it work" with thousands of players in a single instance
  • going forward, areas will be partitioned into about 100 players although "might be less"
  • this is not per system but per arbitrary "zone," that might include planetary bodies, outposts, platforms, etc
  • currently this is working in test bed internals (lol yeah okay we'll loving see)
  • this will be downplayed as "tier 0" or "test version" but will see "no significant improvements"
  • being handled by Turbulent who immediately scrapped the earlier designs and brought in new ideas
  • Pyro is coming "very, very soon" read: by end of year/next two patches (lol yeaaaah okay)
  • "Our next updates skew heavily towards combat and improving the [PvE] combat experience."
  • devs feel that PvP griefing "has been solved" and no further development time will be allotted for griefing issues
  • there's yet another quest system internal redesign happening
  • this might cause older quests to be dropped or reworked (what quests lol)
  • some of these new quests will be labeled "quick action"
  • these pit players directly into action with PvE actors with little to no travel times
  • there will be no "quick action" for PvP players -- "that's Theaters of War" (I still think ToW is a goner, but whatever)
  • there will be no capital ship PvP -- things "might change" if their servers can handle it
  • larger ships (crew of 30+) will never encounter another player capital ship by design
  • "The [capital ship] system is a God-drat loving mess."
  • yet another new player experience is in the works
  • this "tutorial" allows new players to explore without fear of PvP in their own sharded system
  • "At the end of the questline -- if you decide to leave -- everything will be normal, including flagged for PvP."
  • existing backers can go back and experience this content
  • players in this shard have a limited credit cap but can rent different ships for reduced cost
  • requires no ship package or purchase in order to access (????)
  • there's a new group finder in the works with "some" automated process
  • this will allow like minded players to group up easily across servers/zones
  • new group flagging will disable friendly fire attacks
  • grouping system will "more easily show" players you've grouped with
  • UI redesign of the grouping system, chat, and HUD is in the works since early 2019
  • "The design of the original mobiass [sic] is very dated."
  • this is also being handled by Turbulent
  • Chris Roberts and his family take "about ten percent" of all incoming revenue
  • this was a decrease from previous years

edit oh I left one off about the grouping system that was pretty cool
  • you can set your spectrum account to allow others to join your in-game group directly from the forums

@Mole HD - all the best to you both. Hardships make the good times more meaningful.

And on a lighter note regarding bikers, I saw a guy on a very large bike in London recently who had written on the back of his jacket:
"If you can read this my wife has fallen off"
Seen that guy XD

"server meshing" in its original form is scrapped completely as of Q4 2020
"no possible way to make it work" with thousands of players in a single instance

This is truly shocking. This is my shocked face.

Hey Mole, God I'm sorry this happened to your wife, this sucks. Sepsis isn't nearly talked about enough for how often and sudden it happens. Can't imagine what you two must be going through.
Wishing you both loads of strength, lots of help from good company and good news during treatment and that you keep your sense of humor, no doubt it's gonna help immensely with the challenges ahead. Best of luck.

Nope, course not. Again, please never try and take anything I might post (here or otherwise) as some kind of gospel.

I do honestly think Turbulent (and their new hires from Ubisoft) could probably turn SC into a released product given another 24 to 36 months -- if (and that's a big ol capital IF) they aren't meddled with by CI proper.

I think the 3rd party oversight guys they hired have been pointing more and more work at 3rd party companies and seeing more and more results. Wouldn't surprise me if there's a big shakeup corporate wise at CI within the next 18 months.

well boy howdy and hello

Some comments:

- Has CIG realized the game Chris describes can't be made, as many of us have said?

- No capital ship PvP?
- Would Chris ever concede this point? Have the Calders removed Chris from the decision making?
- Does this include capital ships that backers have purchased?

- This description sounds closer to a game that can actually be made.

- This would be a move towards the Elite Dangerous model:
- Has instances like ED
- Has a non-PvP option of sorts
- No P2P so more players per instance
- Adds ship interiors and EVA

- Regarding the disabling of "friendly fire attacks", I don't know if this means it is like the ED "Report crimes against me" or if it means friendly fire does no damage.

Sepsis is a truly horrendous illness, it averages out at roughly a 30% survival rate once the third phase (septic shock) sets in. It causes your body to fight itself and kill off internal organs at a frightening rate, overwhelming it's ability to recover. Once treatment is started, the medical staff have not only to deal with and get rid of the sepsis but repair the damage as it happens. It starves the vital organs of a blood supply causing them to die, starting off with gall bladder, kidneys, liver, spleen, pancreas...you get the picture.

If you aren't physiologically strong in the first place...which my wife was, fortunately... the survival rate is measured in days. As for a recovery roadmap...she's got a very long and painful road to go down, although she's survived. They had to remove some of those organs that succumbed to the sepsis, only managing to halt it's devastating effects before it killed off her kidneys or liver. She might still end up on dialysis for the rest of her life, she also had a good portion of her small intestine, her spleen and appendix removed due to necrosis. They also had to repair the tear in her colon that started all this.

The medical staff still aren't sure if her kidneys, pancreas and liver will recover fully, it's too early to tell...it's going to be a hard road. Small baby steps taking one at a time...but at least we've been given the chance to start those steps :)
It sounds as if it has been horrendous for the both of you. I hope you both able to see and hold each other very soon. But in the interim be sure to look after yourself.

If this comes to pass, it would not be much of a surprise. But partitions like these will mean Stanton would not be a seamless instance at all for example and players would need to load and unload actual system map elements and assets as they go, even if such loading screen is well hidden. This will be quite painful as a comparison to how seamless star systems are in Elite, Space Engineers, IB or NMS for example. I think we have already discussed the possibility a few times before:

IANAD, but wouldn´t that be possible by splitting Stanton in multiple areas each handled by a different server? I mean, ok, more servers means a higher cost for CIG and there would have to be some kind of new instance loading when moving from one area to another and the overall star system would not be the seamless unique instance it is today but I thought that was precisely the point of the first phase of the meshing thingie, the "static" server meshing no? Pretty sure CIG could hide those instance transitions fairly well with shiny quantum animations or what not.

Edit: Ninjaed by Golgot, need to read all before posting!

To be honest, the more I scratch my head with how SC is doing things the more I appreciate Elite´s stellar forge procedural approach (to limit the impact of assets in server or client memory) and the p2p local instancing system. Also from what I can see when, for example, the galaxy server allows us to travel in a supercruise instance and then we drop into a another player´s normal flight instance, that is in fact the same exact logic behind the goals in "server meshing". Elite meshing is even dynamic as it can occur anywhere where players are and it follows them anywhere they go afterwards. The only thing I dont think Elite´s meshing can do is to transition shot projectiles or render objects from one instance to another. There is though at least one thing that I am aware of that manges to communicate accross instances, the wing beacon signals.

Also, this bit:

If there is something CIG is good at is making "shiny" and assets galore, even if they are not meaningful at all from a gameplay standpoint (Microtech etc). This is what keeps backers funding. I can see this totally happening earlier rather than later even if in a barebones states, especially if it is Turbulent handling it, unles CIG is more incompetent than I thought.

Yup, she collapsed last Wednesday after complaining she felt a bit ill after coming back from feeding her horses. Turned out that her colon had ruptured a few days previously sending her body into septic shock...which through experience of third stage sepsis first hand, is a killer. She's been on full life support and in a medically induced coma since then, endured 4 serious life saving operations to remove the various organs which had succumbed to the sepsis and had gone necrotic. Her kidneys were failing leading to her being stuck on dialysis to prevent them failing totally. She's got through all that although still on dialysis for the meantime. Now starts the first of the many, many little steps on the long road to recovery.

We've been together 34 years and this is only the second time she's ever been ill. First time was due to a motorbike accident which had us both hospitalised over 10 years ago...she's never had as much as a cold or flu in all that time. I swear she's been saving them all up for this one...To say I'm relieved is an understatement :)
Better late than never I guess, I am sorry to hear that your wife has been serious ill Mole. I hope that she is on the mend and will be able to come home soon. Waiting for news is horrible or so I have found.

As you gathered I only look at this thread infrequently these days.

I just this minute had a phone call from the ICU that they've woken her up after being in an induced coma to help her recover after the 4 operations she's been through. Although only awake for less than an hour, she managed to speak on the phone and apologised faintly for being ill...and had I been feeding the cats and remembering to take my meds and had I changed the bed and washed the bedding :D

The strength of that woman has me in awe...and thank you all for your kind words. I can go to sleep now, first time in 4 days :)
We love her too, because she keeps you at bay. Best wishes and behave while she is away. I'm telling if you're not a good boy!
