We had a chance to vote for the Imperator because a part of the 'living breathing universe' is politics. This will not be player politics like EvE this will be a fully realised AI society in the lore of the game universe. All characters are unique and mortal in this game, there is no respawn of NPC's if you kill the Imperator it goes on your record until the day you die, and there will be a new election for another Imperator. You will be hunted by the NPC factions for the rest of your life in the game. There is intrigue and history and you could be a part of that history. Personalities - Jax McCleary for example. There are diverse factions and social strata within the game from the rich elites and government insiders to the poor downtrodden workers, as well as those who harbour a grudge and rebel against the UEE, not to mention the alien societies.
You are not paying for a game to allow you play that game for a few hours, weeks or months, you are paying for the right to create a unique living breathing character in a living breathing universe that will remember your characters exploits for as long as the game universe exists.
When you retire from Squadron 42 as the war hero famous around the verse, some may adore you - the government, particularly the Advocacy, will see your ex-military service and training as useful. Some will detest you for being the jackboot of the UEE. You may be sent into 'hostile territory' by the UEE government for a paycheck so there is stealth and intrigue, you get to play Sam Fisher on Spider.
The Banu absolutely love sporting events because they like the spectacle the excitement and the anticipation, they don't have tribal loyalty they want the best most entertaining experience, they love to gamble. There are in-lore sporting events like the Murray Cup and Astro Arena, they will come with their own personalities and media broadcast over the Spectrum. We also see that there are factions and one off events in the Stanton System, this is to demonstrate what the plan is for this living breathing universe alive with countering forces. Everyone falls under the impression 'This is the game'. It isn't, it's a demo of what they can do with the tools they have been making. There's something about Chris Roberts few seem to realise, he values the work of his team members very highly, very often in awe of what they bring to the project - he will not throw content into the game for the sake of players being appeased for a few weeks to wander around and gawp at then complain. The Stanton System is a test bed, it is not the entirety of all the content they have made. They drop enough hints for people who pay attention to realise this.

Any game or activity that you can think of can go into this universe - this is why they are putting oceans, buoyancy, water vehicles and swimming in it as well as other mechanics people generally can't understand being a priority for their space game.
You could live your whole life in the verse on one planet being a farmer watching the weather while you laboriously pick fruit and to take it to market if that is what floats your boat, a taxi driver, a tour boat operator, a roving news reporter for Spectrum News. You could be the Star Citizen version of Lara Croft or Agent 42. Or you can spend your life in a ship always out in deep space looking for places you know no-one has ever walked - including the people who made the game. They are making a game experience where you can never ever finish it and see everything.
This is why it is so difficult to grasp what Star Citizen is planned to be, it just boggles the mind what they are attempting. People say, they are trying to do everything, it'll never be finished! Yes they are going to try to do everything, and each thing will be finished and given to the players as it is finished, you don't have to wait for some grand release date hype... and then wait for the privilege of buying the sequel.
People say.. Oh yes - that thing is in another game! It's not new! That's as maybe but there is no other game that does everything and on a massive limitless scale. When they show microTech do they just do some nice establishing shots for the eye candy? No they have an actual mission in this massively multiplayer game with voice acted characters - (this isn't a part of Squadron 42) because they are showing what they can do in this universe. If they want to make every NPC look unique they can because they did the R&D to make it possible, if they want to create voice acted stories in this universe they can.
One thing that the 'when will it be finished' detractors don't seem to understand, CIG have been building the tools to make content addition as simple and as easy as possible for people with minimal training on the tools they use to create this universe. They set up one office in Montreal to 'make places to go to'. They team up with another studio to make Theatres of War as an expansion. They can keep doing this, there is no limit because the content is being given to the players as it comes online - there is no finish line for the investors to demand be crossed no matter what.
Development won't stop for many years people will be looking at the roadmap and asking - 'When is that thing I neeeedzzz in MY game coming!' those who say 2035! before release are partially right because it isn't planned to be 'finished' by next season it will be a WIP for many years to come, that is not something to complain about! That is something to be elated about your $45 dollars has bought you the biggest most continuously ever expanding game experience you could ever wish for. You won't have to keep buying expansion packs to see this universe grow beyond what anyone could even dream of, because it takes a huge team to come up with all the stuff they plan to fill this living breathing universe with but it becomes a more and more bottom heavy team as the tools are finished. John Pritchett did his part for the game and moved on, it will be the turn of others one day as their tools are finalised and given to new team members whose only job is to churn out content.
Squadron 42 Chapter One has two sequels coming that we know of, but there are no end of stories that could be set in this universe - Advocacy, Army, Marines, Politicians and diplomats, all the stories don't have to be about the Navy. The tools have been made to make future releases much easier to churn out new stories thick and fast. It is not a game Chris Roberts is making, it's a franchise planned to be as big as Star Trek or Star Wars bigger than Firefly maybe even bigger than Stargate, easily bigger than the Expanse. It's a machinima makers dream, you could be Arnold Rimmer aboard your own Red Dwarf.
We should know, shouldn't we, from watching other games drop after the hype the day a game is released the dream dies, whether it's good, bad, great or indifferent it's done, there's no more until the sequel - if it gets made. Not with Star Citizen - the dream doesn't die! Every quarter there is something new to look forward to, a new event in the calendar, new content, and it will continue for years to come. That is the whole point of this project, to do what no other game developer would ever do - Commit to an endless dream.
