Today's blast from the past:

Chris on the Unified 1st/3rd Person Model (July 2015)

Short-term makes it hard. Because most people that work on first person and stuff, and have tried to unify first and third person, will say it was a [pain]. And they've normally given up and cheated. So maybe I'm just really stubborn, which is probably true. It also means I make decent games because I don't give up until I get it right. But I think long term it's sort of the right call.

Sneaky devs indulge in some cheating...

3rd person view seems to be normal.

Like most first-person games it's all faked and then that little center crosshair where you move is where they shoot. And if you actually went out to third person and looked at where your character was shooting and where the bullets were going you would actually notice that the bullets actually were not firing in a straight line from where the gun was pointing, they were probably at an angle, because they're all being gravitated towards that centre crosshair that you have in first person.

Something seems amiss...

That's the advantage is, basically, where your hand is where you're looking it's consistent between first and third person. You don't have to cheat, you don't have to do special special fix-ups, because you're in first person, versus third person, or vice versa. So long, long term, if you get it to the base stuff to work, it makes your life a hell of a lot easier.

And after many lengthy dev attempts to make 3rd person models interact precisely with the environment...

It's almost as if Chris doesn't know what he's talking about

EDIT:

Seven-ish Years Later:

SQ42 devs seemingly fudging the issue by using a first person only overlay:

On the animation side, lots of female retargeting work was completed. The team also looked into getting a fully featured pistol animation set using hand and arm overlays on top of the existing stocked-weapon set. The initial test of the pistol overlay animation looked promising and will save time, effort, and memory. However, full-body animations can still be utilized for specific cases to maintain quality.

EDIT2: Actually, that seems to be about AI / 3rd person animation struggles.

So it's high time that Wakizashis and Tantōs are offered in the SC shop so that commanders can finally perform their Seppuko in style.
No wonder CR is such a poor man if he misses such a great opportunity to make money... 💸
Traditional Seppuku was always carried out using a tantō due mainly to the knifes ceremonial context...as well as it's length of course. The wakizashi is a complement to the katana, and they're always worn as a pair on the left side (a Daisho), the tantō stuck in the waist band on the right side. When visiting a stranger's house, the katana was always left at the door where as wearing a wakizashi was permitted. The tantō is a bit like the Scottish Sgian Dubh since it's also been relegated for ceremonial use. The short fighting knife was allowed to be openly worn in company...the left boot or legging being the traditional place although when worn in the right boot or legging or on a belt, it was taken as a sign of aggression or distrust. Remember that if you ever hire a kilt to go to a wedding...Sgian Dubh in the left sock :)

Finally, the Bugsmasher we deserve

An alt account was really useful for me (a medic, basically) - to follow me around and inject me when stairs knocked me out. Now, it is very rare for a game breaking bug to stop my game.

Just follow yourself around and nothing can go wrong.

(And only ~$455 spent in 3 months by this 'ED refugee'. Jobs a good'un ;))

Strange use of the word gameplay though...

And then just yesterday half the server was just hanging out taking drugs. A long line formed and everyone was just chill talking about who had the best paint job. Probably the best 45min gameplay of the last 3 months for me.

So is that where Dubh Step comes from?

I never thought I'd see this cluster of backers (and former r/ds participants) being critical.
The best quote from that thread I think was this one...

"Now that we have most of the foundation tech established and Chris has a good grasp on what can and cannot realistically be done"

Do we even know the state of CR's move to the UK, because listening to the backers its anywhere between he moved months ago to he still hasn't moved.

Is his move to the UK currently at Tier 0? Waiting for the movement pipelines to be complete?

I don't think CR has a good grasp on anything involving reality.

Perhaps he should have got a good grasp on what could be realistically done years ago when he was telling people what SC would have.

You clearly know nothing about moving development You have to refactor the movemesh on the engine before you can refactor the fidelity.
